I was born and raised in the backwoods of Western North Carolina and still live in the house I was born in. My grandparents kept milk cows. Coming up, all we had was raw milk. I can’t tell you the gallons I watched my grandmother strain through cheese cloth, or how many pounds of butter she had us churn. So many memories……

I have seen other channels recommend having a big bucket on hand to catch urine/poop when they are on the stand/in the barn being milked. stop it splashing into the milk zone. Either way you want your barn to have a long trench/french drain down the middle that you can hose all stalls/floors muck towards for thorough cleaning. Its worth doing, My big horse stables was not built by animal people and its the one thing I regret not insisting on.

One thing I love it having one of the black rubber bowls to put my milking pail into so the bottom of the bucket itself doesn’t get as dirty in the barn! Also plan on having 20 gallons worth of jars. I started with 12 gallons worth and quickly realized even just getting 3-4 gallons a day - it wasn’t enough. Jars break. They are used up for yogurt/buttermilk and not part of the rotation. Etc.

I’d recommend an automatic milking machine as a game changer. Not only will it save you time and energy, but when the cow kicks it you don’t lose a bucket of milk, you just put the hose back on the teat. It also helps with mastitis. Sarah at Living Traditions uses one. My bro in law use to milk 8 at a time, twice a day…always at least 300 head. Milk was stored in the milk room, 2 big sterile refrigerated tanks with a spinner in each one. When we wanted cream, we stopped the spinner for a little bit and scooped it off the top. Then the milk truck came and hauled it away. Everything was always kept super clean. All the poop was hosed with a low powered hose between cows in the parlor and with a high powered hose in the holding lot after each milking…down to the silage pit. As babies were born, he kept the girls and sold the boys or raised a few for beef,,,(they had 6 kids). When he wasn’t milking we would block the drain and fill the cement milking parlor with water for an indoor pool lol. Ah, the good ol days. Oh and the radio was kept on 24/7, the cows loved it and gave more milk.

Sounds like my childhood. Both Grandparents had farms and my parents grew up on that line of work. My father on the weekends picked up milk from the local farms and took it to the milk plants. I loved growing up around dairy farms and I never noticed until you mentioned about the radio, 100% correct, every good dairy farm I know had a radio on for the girls 😁

This would be massively far in the future, but in the home you are building, have you considered getting an industrial steam dishwasher/sanitizer? Like a high temp door type dishwasher so you can sanitize dishes, large pots, your milk stuff in less than 2 min and be done? Might be worth the investment for time saving. I once worked in an industrial kitchen and after go rinse the food off, it goes sooo quick and kills bacteria.

All big dairy’s take them away early like days to just a couple of weeks just letting the babes get the colostrum. So the farmer can take All the milk to sell. When we were kids we would run out to the garden and pick a tomato , wipe it off with our shirt tails and eat it on the spot , green bell peppers too . We lived like what people now days call homesteads with meat hogs and chickens and raw milk . I'm 73 yrs old and fit as a fiddle . I believe in eating as natural as you can , be good to my neighbors and love Jesus Christ . In Indiana

You could use your coffee grounds. Just let them sit in a bucket of water to get the left over "coffee" out of it. That will make it neutral so it won't acidify the soil too much(unless you need it then just sprinkle). Drain the liquid and voila, you have organic matter with nitrogen. No rush to name the little calf just yet, you need to see some personality first. The right name will pop up and resonate with your heart when it's time. We actually inherited some really cool stainless steel milk cans? that look like curling rocks. Wait, do people curl in the US? It's a sport. Well, you can look it up lol 😄

We drank unpasteurized milk growing up. 6 kids ruff and tumble with horses and mini bikes. No broken bones but lots stitches. (Sometimes ducktape). I'm laughing with the memories. We always played a radio in the barn for the animals. Be careful not to have them listen to any news updates. Lol I am so excited to be able to watch your homestead develop. Quite an endeavor.

It is supposed to be very rainy and windy here this evening as well, but over the last few days I have been digging out the space to build a pen for muscovies. I am finding so much garbage; metal bits and old glass bottles it is best to put fresh material even if I still give them a dirt floor. I hope the rain doesn't wash soil back into the hole 🤔 ah well. After it dries out a bit I will get back to it.

As far as keeping the milking supplies in the barn, I would suggest keeping them in some type of heavy duty tote with lids or something. Unless you plan on re-washing the equipment every time before you milk, I am just thinking of rodents running around and leaving urine.

Jess, that's not too small. We used to have jersies years ago, your going to need it. If you build a room for your supplies make sure you get a double sided deep sink specially for farms. They are so helpful. You can get them second hand from farms that are no longer farmed.

I am with you on milking a bunch of goats and cramping. We bought the Henry Milker for me, but also when I go away for my husband to use it.

If the milking gets to be too much for you manage, I've seen a powered hand pump that Lumnah Acres uses to milk their goats. I'm sure you can find one. (I don't have farm animals but love watching all type of KZbinrs.)

The farm is taking form in structure and presentation....growing more beautiful all the time. However the pretty is all the more enjoyable knowing it has been built up with the right steps.

You may need to have some udder balm on hand if you don't already. Helps with scratch healing so they are easier to milk. My Dad used it on our cows.

In between north and south it's as thingamajig and I sure wish I had known about it when I was putting up about 200' of fence using plyers instead! Not sure but it might be good to put a sealer on the brick to prevent water from the flower bed wicking up to the house. Or maybe use a plastic vapor barrier between the dirt and the brick?

When my children was at home we went to a farm and bought raw milk every week. I had three girls and we all drank with every meal. Six gallons a week. Nothing happened to us.

A garden trellis such a simple concept but it can bring so much more life and pollinators to the garden. We don’t always have to plan a garden two dimensionally. Use that height! 🥳
