His solos are painfully beautiful, raw and emotional.

Watching Neil live in concert is great because while he is ripping out some killer riffs on the guitar, he is stomping all around the stage in a controlled rage that is very entertaining to observe. He almost never stops moving, inspired by his music and something inside himself that is crying to get out. Songs such as "Like A Hurricane" are impetus for Neil to go a little ...over the edge.

Neil revels in imperfection. He was grunge before there was grunge. He stumbles through his solos always landing on the right note somehow. It always sounds very unrehearsed. I have no idea what I'm trying to say.

His singing sucks, his guitar playing is that of a 8 year old and yet that combination somehow makes Neils music amazing!

I could be wrong about this, but I think he usually just cut several full takes of the leads, then eventually just picked the one he liked best, whether it had mistakes in it or not. I don't think there was a lot of editing a solo together from different parts of different takes. That may add to the aura it being live and in the moment...

@@rossmacintosh5652 Agree with you on that one. Keith's very right. Perfection doesn't count, it's raw emotion. Kind of reminds me of David Gilmour of Pink Floyd who also makes his guitar sing and emote emotions ... but then, David is a perfectionist while Neil is emotion in himself ... I like both so much ...

I first heard this killer song on the radio the day it was released on the album "American Stars 'n Bars" in May 1977. A lot of the character of the song is more than just Neil - it is the primary electric guitar he uses, which he calls 'Old Black'. This guitar has been so heavily customized and modified over the years that it has a completely unique tone. It even has it's own Wikipedia entry - truly a one of a kind instrument and Neil uses it perfectly!

Thank you once again for your reaction to a Neil tune. I've been a fan of NY for over 40 years. I catch myself in the position you mentioned...I lean more towards his rock side... but I do enjoy the acoustic folky sound...the country sound ...the bluesy sound...the Motown sound ... It depends on my mood what sound fits the day. If you want to go off the beaten path of Neil music. He was in a group in the mid/late 70's called The Ducks Neil has their album High Flyin out now . Neil tunes that they do that I enjoy are Sail Away and Are you Ready for the Country...Non-Neil tunes that are incledible are Gypsy Wedding , Silver wings and Younger Days...Their isn't a bad song on the album.

Thank you, Big Soul Biz, for playing LIKE A HURRICANE - It's a pure tour de force of electric guitar feedback and excellent lyrics. The song. You can feel the intense desire, which has powerful themes of love and loss. It's a beautiful, classic, full-tilt rocker that stands alone. Seeing him perform it life leaves you drained. It's so ethereal. He seems possessed while he's playing, lost in the groove. Thank you again for the fantastic music and masterful commentary - I'm blown away.

At points the solos sound like they're on the verge of falling apart in a pile of sour notes, until the next note pulls them back towards the starting lick, and it sounds almost ad-libbed until he plays them that way live too and you realize he ain't messing around. Those really high pitched squeals in the solos are called string pinches. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top fills "La Grange" with them too. When you're ready to turn back towards his folksier side, check out some of these Neil Young classics -- "Sugar Mountain", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", and "Out on the Weekend".

first of all, I love you man you get it. Niels, slow songs are sparse, but appreciated in his concerts. But believe me when I tell you, there’s nothing better than a grungy three hours of Neil Young. His most recent long ass masterpiece is walk like a giant. I’ve seen him at least 10 times. Probably the most interesting concert was his Greendale concert, in which he fronted a a crew of actors which played out his songs themes of the devil coming to a town in I made a place called Greendale and causes havoc and of course there’s the save the earth theme, which is one of his constants

Not everyone "gets" Neil, glad that you do! Some call him sloppy, I call him hypnotic and mesmerizing, especially live. The way that he goes into a trance-like state and gets lost during his solos, and takes us with him. Love his sort of fragile sounding vocals too. I do prefer the version from Live Rust. Watching him perform live is a trip! Anything from Live Rust should be next, it's one of the best concert movies ever! "Comes A Time" is my personal fave but take your pick.
