As a proud pervious owner of a custom '88 SS myself: I totally understand how this became your passion project. Watching this video has been so nostalgic for me, I've been getting goosebumps during multiple clips and just listening to the familiarly sweet music to my ears that it makes when it idles. Thank you so much for making this series! I truly appreciate what you're doing with this car, despite the videos not gaining much traction. It has brought back so many fun memories that I thought were lost to time, but they were buried somewhere deep in my mind - just waiting for someone like you to trigger them back and I can't thank you enough for that. 🧡 I even had a lot of the same issues that you've talked about in this series like the belts being so tight that they were bending the shaft of every water pump I threw in it. I wound up doing the same as you and loosening the belts a bit to "fix" the issue. This of course caused the same type of squeaky belt issue that you have but I was in high-school at the time and got made fun of a lot because of it. However, I enjoyed getting the last laugh when I would engulf them in a cloud of smoke while doing donuts around them in an empty parking lot across the street from the school where I could get away with such shenanigans 😅 Among many of my peers, it was affectionately known as "JT's souped-up hooptie" - especially because the engine had just been replaced (with a much better one, much like yours - except "better" in the late '90s also meant "bigger") by my friend who sold it to me right before I bought it. That required just a "little bit" of front-end modification to make it fit - so basically, the entire front of the car was stripped down to bare metal and bondo to make the necessary extensions and then it was then primed, but not painted right before he had a family emergency and had to move out of state in a hurry. Literally bought it off of him for a steal because of this and I still feel bad for that to this date even though he insisted that he was fine with it, and that he really wanted me to have it despite not being able to afford anything remotely close to the price that it was actually worth. He just knew how much I loved and appreciated it from hanging out with him, I guess. Never got around to repainting it unfortunately, because after having it for only a few of the best months of my car-owning life, I got T-boned by a Ford Explorer going 55mph+ right in the drivers-side door. Was lucky to survive that crash. Mine had a split bench seat in the front and by some twist of fate: the seatbelt latch that I was supposed to clip into had broken a few days prior to the crash so I clipped in to the passenger's side instead as a temporary fix. The doctors who operated on me said that when they brought me in, the paramedics were in awe that they found me alive because they often saw seatbelt decapitations (or fatal spinal injuries at best) as a result of such collisions and I should consider myself extremely lucky because clipping into the passenger's side was probably the only reason that I survived, aside from the fact that these cars were built like tanks. Was a "total loss" according to the insurance but I still had plans to fix her up because I just couldn't stand to see her in the shape she was in after that. I was still living with mom at the time so I parked it in her back yard and told her about my plans but when I went off to Job Corps for a year, she had other plans and sold it to a junkyard for $100 that I never saw a penny of. Needless to say, I was completely devastated when I got home and found out. What she didn't know at the time was the practically new, undamaged engine in that thing alone was worth well over 10x what I paid for the entire car. If she only knew how much the basic parts on that thing are worth today... I don't have it in my heart to tell her though. Anyways... thanks again for helping me take that trip down memory lane. I could tell you so many more stories of the good times I had in that thing in the short amount of time that I was lucky enough to own it, but I don't have time for that today, and I've already written enough for a single post, I suppose. 🤣 I just hope that this inspires you a bit to keep going forward with this series. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who could share a story or two about their old Monte Carlo experience and how it impacted their lives. I hope to see many more episodes about this car come out in the future because I'm truly enjoying every single second of it!

Nice car, Randy. I like subtle. I miss my '76 Monte Carlo. The only thing I ever did to it besides oil, tires, etc. was an A/C compressor and high pressure A/C LINE. I got the compressor for free. I had a friend who was a city bus mechanic, and he did the A/C work on the busses. The busses had two A/C compressors, and when one went bad, they changed both. He put a pulled one in my car, changed the high pressure hose and put the oil and freon in. It was super cold after that.

Randy, it is good that you're knocking out the small jobs that make a big difference. The transmission pawl is what locks the transmission when you put it into the park position. You should still use the parking brake as well. I'm sure you will find damage to the pawl when you come to pull the transmission sump. This was most likely caused by putting the transmssion into park without using the parking brake putting strain on the pawl. A former work colleague (I'll call him Michael) in the early 2000s parked his Rover 800 (sold as the Rover Sterling in the US) on a slope with the transmission in drive and the parking brake on. Somehow, it rolled downhill demolishing a neighbour's wall. We called his car the "runaway Rover" after that. You don't want your Monte Carlo to suffer the same fate after all the money you've put into it.
