I filmed 1 second everyday while shooting the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance ~ Deet's Puppeteer POV

Ever wonder what it was like to be a puppeteer on the Emmy award wining Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance?
Here is a glimpse into our world. I performed Deet & Naia (who were later voiced by Nathalie Emmanuel & Hannah John-Kamen) and various other characters on the show, and during the last 2 blocks of filming I took a second of footage everyday using the 1SE video diary app.

To this day, I'm still so incredibly sad that this series didn't get the love or attention it deserved. I'm especially disappointed in Netflix in this respect, because they made something so wonderful possible, but didn't have the courage to take the risk of a second season. I grew up watching Labyrinth and discovered Dark Crystal for myself in my adult years. It is a unique and beautiful world, but most of all I have respect for all the work that has been done. Films and series that combine so much craftsmanship and acting have become a rarity these days. Just a big thank you for these wonderful little glimpses and thank you for letting us take this visual journey to Thra again. ❤

This is one of the best show I've ever seen. No kidding. I loved everything about it : the story, the characters, the sets, the puppetry work, the respect to the original film, the amazing score by Daniel Pemeberton...Deet was my favorite character, I loved her so much. Of all the show's whose cancellations I really mourn, this is the one where I'm as sad over the loss of the production as I am the story. The artistry and craftsmanship in every detail of the set, the puppetry, the cinematography, the design, the effects, the lighting, the costuming, the puppetmaking etc. I can't even begin to list it! I feel like Netflix had a duty to human artistry to keep this show being made.

We only got one season but boy am I grateful that the stars aligned to make that season happen in all of its practical glory! More puppets and physical sets and hand painted backdrops pleaseee

WHAT??? I'm excited that I found this. I just watched THE AGE OF RESISTANCE and LOVED IT ( a little late - though i grew up loving the movie). Deet was my favorite. I loved her character so much I just bought the Weta figurine of her. If you're still reading these...phenomenal job.

I know this has been up awhile, but this really helped ease some of my heart soreness. Dark Crystal was my very first fandom I entered into as a child, before even Star Wars. Besides watching the movie they bought me the audio tape and book. I wish it hadn't been lost in a house fire in my 20s. I had had so many things stored in my old room waiting for my kids to be old enough. Thank you for these little glimpses. I think he would be very proud of you.

@@YoungsterBeccy mom and dad got the house rebuilt several years before cancer took him, and my kids and I (sell, son and I now since my daughter moved to her own nest) are in a house in an area of the country that looked very like Stone-in-the-Wood in places, so it is nice. Now and then I come across things to replace to items I used to have. I'm so happy though that the Dark Crystal isn't one of those movies that faded away because it meant being able to still share. Take care.

Puppetry work like this has always intrigued me not just with The Dark Crystal (which I’m ashamed to admit I had never actually seen until Lockdown) but with many other projects including Labyrinth and even stuff like Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet (you know Gerry Anderson’s work) and it’s great to see just how a lot of it looks from the puppeteers perspectives as you’ve shown, great footage. Just goes to show as well that it was far better off to continue the puppetry work for the series instead of just making it into a boring CGI animated thing.

Hello there! I'm, a young puppeteer! I've never worked a professional gig as SPECIFICALLY a puppeteer~ But I've acted, sewn, danced and animated. I'm just now getting into fabricating creatures and rigs for a project for the first time. Age of Resistance (a specific few scenes in particular) are what brought me to realize storytelling -building, animating, bringing things to life- could be a real career for me. @@YoungsterBeccy It’s been 3 years since I saw it. Reflecting on it now in terms of fantasy, I feel it’s second only to Lord of the Rings in terms of authentic yet large scale fantasy storytelling. The world, characters, voice work, the puppetry, camera work, music. It completely took me by suprise. Not only would I love to see a second season, I’d contribute if it was crowd funded.

I remember back in school I saw the trailer for this show during a math class on my phone and I was so obsessed with it cuz I've never seen a fantasy show with puppets before and it looked so cool! So after the class I was showing all my classmates the trailer and stuff but they were kinda weirded out by it because of the puppets but I still really wanted to see it and when it came out I watched it all and dang I was in love! I liked all the characters and just how well they were written cuz they felt more real than human actors. One thing I really appreciated was how the show had three different protagonists and they all were equally interesting while being completely different from each other. But yeah, thankyou for making this show it's one of my favorite fantasy shows of all time :)

You and the entire team created something so unimaginably special. When I watched Age Of Resistance I honestly felt the same kind of emotions I felt when I watched The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. It was unlike anything I ever saw before and evoked such emotions, that I felt I could reach into the screen and enter this world. What made it so incredible was it’s tangibility. The fact that nearly everything was handmade, and nearly everything was actually there and functioning by the laws of the real world. It was you and the hard work of everyone that achieved that sensation, and for that I say thank you so, so much for reminding me of the wonder fantasy could evoke.

I found you completely by chance, this series simply has a huge affection in my heart and especially this little princess I was so sad about the cancellation of the series, so many questions, no answers. I watched the original film, I read the comics and I still feel like there's such an important part missing, not knowing what happened to them. Wouldn't there have been a slight chance of getting one of the screenwriters to say a summarized version of what was scheduled to happen in the story? 😔 This series was made with great care, you can feel the love and care in each episode and looking at this "1 second a day" just makes me more sure of how much you loved producing it as much as I loved watching it

Yes! I puppeteered Deet! And laid down the guide vocal for Nathalie Emmanuel to replace after. She was an absolute dream character to create, I couldn't have been more blessed with her journey. I’ve always loved practical effects. When I discovered Dark Crystal I was instantly in love. The show was absolutely stunning. Hi Beccy! Do you attend conventions? If so, is there any chance of you attending Stoke Con Trent on June 16th? I've always wanted to meet someone involved with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The original 1982 film is my favourite that Jim Henson ever did, and the Netflix prequel series really did it justice.

@@YoungsterBeccy No worries Beccy, there is a solution to that. All I have to do is message them and say you're interested attending the convention. Organisers always listen to the general public on what guests they would like to see anyway. I'll be sure to leave your contact details as well.

I was auditioning for DC whilst shooting Derry Girls S1. DG shot in the Summer and then DC started shooting in November of the same year x
