In this video, I compare my jack to the J&S Jack and the J&S Jack won that battle. Check out the comparison and the pros and cons of this jack. In my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons!
Also, don't forget in honor of our fallen heroes, J&S Jacks is offering an 11% discount on purchases between September 9th to the 19th. Just use the promo code "HERO" to apply the discount.

You may be asking yourself, what are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

You forgot the number one reason to buy the J&S over any other: it's made in USA. That alone made me buy one, and I would again even if it was $1000. It's definitely the sturdiest (and heaviest) I've found and that gives me peace of mind. When I eventually have to replace my bottle, I will probably find a pneumatic-assist version so I can just raise and lower it with a finger lever. Also, the reason the J&S takes slightly longer to raise is because of its somewhat higher capacity bottle jack. The same J&S jack will also lift trikes, snowmobiles and four wheelers with just platform attachments. Good video; very impartial. Love your videos! Keep up the good work!

I had a J&S jack for about 8 years. It worked well. The bottle started leaking at the adjustment knob. Only required a small seal, but in order to get the seal, had to buy an entire rebuild kit for about $40.00. I see now that J&S Jacks went belly up.

HI Robert, Love your site and the additional information that you bring to the motorcycle community. I've had my J&S Jack for about 8 years and it has worked flawlessly over that period for time. I have coincidently painted my garage floors, in florida and Charlotte,NC the same as yours and scratched them both by forgetting to completely raise the two screws high enough after lowering the bike, then attempting to move the jack. I know you're concerned with the release of the hydraulic valve but I like that you can release it slowly and safely as fast or as slowly as you like and that's a plus. The bottom line regarding the J&S Jack is that I have never had an incident with it. I love the way I can easily move my bike around my garage and save space. I have used it on a Road King, Ultra limited and Ultra Limited Low and it has been a great purchase. Good Luck to you and I think you made the right choice.

Hey John. Thank you very much! I like the jack too and it’s very beneficial due to the ease of moving the motorcycle around on it and the stability of it. But the release valve to lower it is in an absolutely ridiculous location. Nothing is perfect. 👍🏾

I purchased the J&S Jack in 2007 and have been very happy with it. I thought about not purchasing because of the price but decided if I purchased a HD for over $20,000 I could afford the best jack and pay the price. And let me tell you this is the best jack. I live in WI so I was able to drive to the company and talk to the owner. Nice guy and he also included an oil pan adapter with it that works great when changing your oil.

LT. I've had my J&S jack for 10 years. First to lift my 05 Ultra and now the 2018 Limited. By far the most stable when the bike is lifted. As others stated, I always go under the right side of the bike so it settles on the jiffy stand when lowered. The little knob to release the hydraulic pressure is a recent development as others have stated, mine uses a 12 inch rod to engage the release. The bottle jack is by far the weak point in the J&S jack...... they are at the mercy of their supplier on that one. I've replaced the jack once due to failure. The current jack has been serviced to remove the air from the system. The jack leaks.... No denying it.. But again, the overall design and stability make it a keeper for me. I went to the J&S jack after my 05 fell off the previous jack and missed hitting my wife's car by inches when it fell....😳 Stay Safe and Healthy Sir!!

Very good video Robert, I really liked the comparison and had never heard of the OTC jack or I would likely have gotten that one to replace my old craftsman motorcycle jack. I had ordered the J&S jack at the end of July so it should be here soon. J&S website does say 4-6 weeks for delivery. I watched a lot of videos and was impressed by it's stability and mobility which is why I went with them.

Looks like a good quality Jack. I have a HD lift jack something like that only it has a handle that you turn CW to raise the bike and CCW to lower the bike nice and easy , cost was approximately $350 back in 2007 and I use it alot from my 2007 ultra classics and 2012 ultra limited and the 2017 ultra classics . I never tried to lift my 2016 triglide because it's a little heavier. Thanks for another great video. 👍

I waited 12 weeks for my J&S lift to arrive last month. Delay was due to unavailability of the bottle jack. Funny, where you have a knob to open.close the cylinder, mine has a small lever that makes it cumbersome to lower the lift slowly. Maybe they are sourcing jacks from different suppliers. Otherwise it is a great product. Appreciate your detailed and honest review!

Robert, I’ve had my J&S Jack for 2.5 years with no issues. I’ve used it lifting my Ultra and never had any concerns. It seems that J&S has changed the “release” mechanism since I bought mine. My jack has a metal rod with a handle attached to the release valve which allowed me to stand while releasing pressure. I agree with you that having the releases so low is a design issue to be addressed. I still would buy the J&S over all the cheaper jacks….in this case you really do get what you pay for!! Mike

Hey Robert, I’ve had my J&S Jack for 8 years. It’s been used for NUMEROUS washes and maintenance jobs. Great Jack and you’ll be pleased with years of service. Had a bottle failure (basically it just started leaking. Not a catastrophic failure) around year 5 or 6 but I found a replacement for it cheaper than J&S charges. And it was during Covid, so they were shut down by state law.

great video Robert, and I appreciate you comparing products. I am of the different opinions from the others here and that I am too cheap to purchase the J n S jack at $650 for the small benefits you get out of it vs the other jack.. do I love my bike, of course, but it's more the price principal and I feel $650 is just too excessive.... If I feel my S glide is unstable at the top setting, I wrap a strap over it and tighten to the jack, which is more of a piece of mind. I too, come in from the right side of the bike. Thx for allowing my comment. …. And .. I put both my wife’s’ and my bikes on the OTC jacks all winter long… and it’s a dam long winter in Ontario

I've owned my J&S Jack for 12 years and like it. I've never owned another brand so I can't compare but the J&S has served me well. I use it from the right side of the bike, so the kick stand isn't in the way. Also I crack the bleed screw slightly so that the bike comes down all the way to the kickstand slowly without any issues and no hands needed.

I just bought a Sears Craftsman motorcycle jack that was several years old as there are no new Craftsman jacks in any inventory anymore. I chose the old Craftsman (weighs 90 lbs) because many of the current models are cheezed down on quality. The Craftsman cost me $100 and has long T handle for moving the bike and both peddles (up and down) so no bending down to the floor to release. The new ones have much less metal and the designs have shrunk down the heavy gage main frame with less bracing and no metal around the front wheels. The Craftsman jack is a beast and weighs probably 10 pounds more then the Harbor Freight and all the other knock offs. So this gave me the opportunity to buy the best at less costs and clean it up and refurbish it which I've done. I first sanded all the rust off the frame with small wire wheels and flap wheels on my drill. Then use Rust-Oleum (Rusty Metal Primer) on the whole frame followed by the Rust-Oleum Semi-Gloss Black brush on top coat. The red parts I bought a spray can of "Cherry Red" Rust-Oleum metal paint and sanded down all the rust and sprayed that on. Next a lot of the hardware was working but looked bad - especially the Acorn Nuts used on all the pivot points. I bought new stainless Acorn Nuts and some lock and flat washers and got rid of all the rusty bits. On the platform top where the motorcycle sits I replaced the rusty Acorn nuts with some stainless steel lifting triangle shaped eyelet nuts. The Craftsman has all M12 heavy duty fasteners. These triangle (eyelets) can be attached to the bike at first contact and the bike will not go anywhere during the lifting process unlike the loops down on the base cannot be used until the bike is fully up in the air. (good luck with that). I've posted the final assembly build and modified skid plate on a Kawasaki Versys X300 to allow it to be lifted up in the air. The video is on my channel - LINK: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kICpmXtor76Er68&ab_channel=trekOCLVone

As a person who does this for a living daily, I will tell you the OTC Jack you have is very competent and does a good job. It is basically a rebranded Big Red Jack. In the lifting world, there are not many companies out there in the business. Majority of products are just rebranded, reboxed under contract. For the price of the J&S, you can get a Pro-Lift HD. It is a combo hydraulic/pneumatic, 1250 lbs capacity, adjustable leg rails, and the release knob is on the top. You barely even have to bend over to lower it. Finally, I would say if all you want is ease of movement, or stability, get a dolly. Much cheaper, and does the job better!

Robert, this is the second time watching this vid. The first time I didn't finish it. My Craftsman jack of over 13 years has bitten the dust. The handle is pulling away from it's brace. I'v always liked the J&S so I'm going for it. A couple of the things the things you didn't like were sort of pety (JMO). I would never lift my FLHTK from the kickstand side. I you haven't watched J&S video you can see that when lowering the bike, crack the release and watch the bike lower itself down and settle on the kickstand. I want a table, but space in my garage is limited. I did notice the bike wiggle on the OTC, same on my Craftsman. Placing my order today...

I have had a J&S Jack for 8+ years. I don't get a ton of use out of it, maybe half a dozen times a year. It's pretty solid. I thought it was expensive 8 years ago but wow, they are crazy expensive now. I think cost wise, I'd shop around and something at least close to as good prior to spending almost 700 bucks on a lift. At the same time, i would not use a HF 99 dollar jack on a 30K bike.

Robert Simmons, in my 75 years of life I have had to figure ways to modify many of the products that i have used and bought. If I may suggest finding a 4 to 5 foot long piece of light aluminum pipe and cut a notch just wide enough to fit over the piece to lower the jack. That way you will be standing when lowering the jack and feel comfortable doing so. Respectfully, Holise Cleveland (pronounced Hol,lis)

I also have a J&S Jack (8 yrs old) and I'm very happy with it. However, I NEVER slide the jack in from the Jiffy Stand side. I always slide it in from the other side, so when I lower my motorcycle to the ground, it leans over towards the Jiffy Stand side and not towards me. In doing it that way it's much easier to reach and turn the lowering knob because the cycle doesn't "come at you" (lol) so to speak. I recommend sliding the jack in from the non-jiffy stand side ONLY.

Hi Robert, Thank you! I am more focused on the ability to raise and lower the jack. I would be afraid that if something gave out while my hands were down there, like the bottle jack failing, and that bike comes down hard, you're under your bike with all that weight. As far as moving it around? I would look at replacing the wheels on the OTC for ball bearing rubber wheels. I am pretty sure there's something out there for that. I just can't see spending $400 more for a jack that is just a little bit more stable. I don't plan on sitting on it while it's on the jack, so.

I’ve had my J&S Jack for just under a year. Had a failure in the lift but left a message at J&S and the owner called me and walked me through bleeding the bottle jack. Two things I noticed on your video. I did not see the rubber boots that go on the wheel stops (brakes). That will keep you from scaring up the floor. The other this is lowering the bike. I crack release screw just a little and then stand up to hold the handle bar lowering the bike all the way down until it rest on the kickstand. I don’t understand why you have to stop it once the wheels touch the floor and then continue to lower it. I love this jack and keep my bike on it when not riding. With the bike raised in the highest position, my bike stores better in my garage versus leaning on the kickstand.

I bought my J&S Jack in 2010 when I purchased my 1st Harley . It’s paid for itself many times over as far a money 💴 I saved performing my own maintenance 👨‍🔧. The J&S Jack is made in America 🇺🇸 out of Heavy Steel. It’s built extremely well! Customer service is second to none! Only thing that went wrong was a new bottle Jack . Contacted them & they sent me out two replacement Free! The safety on the J&S is a much for reliable system because there are two of them! I’m sure mine will last the rest of my life . I purchased mine back in 2010 for $399.00 I guess prices went up since then . Lol 😂

Robert thanks for the unbiased review. Reading through different forums, it's rare to find someone who shelled out the $$ for a J&S (to include $$ shipping) to admit they have issues with it. I appreciate you pointing out where you would give the nod to the OTC. Question, have you ever lifted your CVO Ultra with the OTC? I have an Ultra and am in the market for a jack but, don't have the $$ budget for a J&S. Thanks for the great vids.

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Hello again Mr. Simmons. In the next couple days I am gonna purchase a jack. I have the option to buy an 8 yr old J&S for 250. It's in decent condition nothing wrong. Coming with an Xtra bottle. Or after seeing the OTC on ya review they are available for 254ish now. Which would u suggest. I won't be moving the bike much while it's jacked up. If the price wasn't so low for the J&S I wouldn't even be deliberating at all!! Thanks for ya valued opinion once again.

With both jacks you have the option of strapping the bike down. Definitely recommended on the OTC (looks the same as Harbor Freight jack) and then move or clean with greater security even at top position. Harbor Freight jack great value for the money. J&S much more stable but 3x’s+ the price! 🤷🏻‍♂️ BTW I’m using HF works for me so far. GoldwingMikeNY. 👍✌️😎🇺🇸

I just purchased a jack from Amazon this week and it’s pretty much identical to your jack you’ve had for 2 years, all controls are in the same place..It’s made by TOGARHOW and was $278…It also let’s my Road King down steadily and slowly,as yours does..I need to give my garage floor a good vacuum and i’ll see tomorrow how hard-easy it is to move my bike around..I was already thinking today if it’s difficult to move the bike around i’d rather look for a better set of rear wheels,,possibly 1/2” higher with a better and tighter wheel bearing then go to another jack…Your older machine like my new one has better and safer options,,i don’t want to have to be bent over and under my bike to let it down..I’ll know more tomorrow when i lift my Road King a few inches off the ground and try moving it around but i’m very happy with the quality ,sturdiness and safety…

Hi Robert You probably have soft wheels on the OTC. Change the wheels with soli wheels. It will roll with 2 fingers. Also the reason the release the harbor freight jack is hard to release slowly is they use a course thread on the release shaft. Better jacks use a fine thread.

As someone who enjoys a little engineering, I would say do a little cutting and welding and fit your old bottle and pedals to the J & S jack. Either that, or replace the wheels on the old jack, shim out the pivot points and, if necessary weld in a couple of braces to remove the flexing - you clearly like the old jack, so why not resolve its issues instead of trying to replace it?

Something to think about on the “speed of lift” on the OTC vs. J&S: The J&S lifts in smaller increments. Which is more refined mechanically. Which is to say, I can lift to specific heights that are much more precise. It also means less bouncing/movement while bike is is being lifted. I also like the ability to lower the bike with more precision. Often, if I’m working on a motor, a fraction of an inch higher or lower makes a ton of difference. I also transitioned to the same J&S lift. The biggest “plus” for me… I no longer have a heavy bike that shaking and bouncing when I’m doing mechanical maintenance.. or even polishing. Did I worry I’m the past? No exactly. But the J&S gives me so much piece of mind. By the way, having 2 safety bars is a built in redundancy. That way, if you have a catastrophic failure, they’re not both gone. Thanks again for sharing . I’m now a new sub.

Seems like the big win for the J&S jack over the OTC is the ease with which it rolls. But it is so much more expensive. I can't help but wonder if it would be possible to get the OTC jack, then upgrade the wheels to something closer to what the J&S jack uses. Thoughts?

I have the J&S jack and while the knob bothers me a bit, I find that just cracking it open the bike goes down slowly and therefore there is no need to hold the knob and the bike at the same time. Just crack the knob, then when the bike gets about where you would want to grab it, then just grab it. Don't worry about bending down to hold the knob.

I like my Harbor Freight jack...when you lower the bike, you have to just barely crack the valve so that it slowly leaks down, then you're bike won't come crashing down like that...my only complaint about it is that you lock it into position with a metal rod which requires the jack to be fully lifted before you can secure the jack, so if you don't want the bike all the way up, it could still come down on you, though it never has, but I don't even like that it's a possibility...other than that, it's a great jack for the money... that being said, if I was in the market for a new one, I think I'd get the OTC over the J&S, just going by this demonstration...in fact, from what I'm seeing here, looks like the Harbor Freight jack has the better release valve than the J&S...it does move easily, but there's just too many design flaws, the worst one being that badly positioned release valve...I'm actually liking the OTC jack better...I never move my bike once it's on the jack anyways...I always put the bike in the position I want it in & then jack it up, so I'm in a good position to get all the way around the bike with plenty of room so I don't have to move it...

How have you made it this long without one??? I use mine a lot; super handy! I've had my J & S Jack for ten years with zero issues. I was shocked when you stated the price of one now, though. I believe I paid $330.00 directly from the manufacturer in WI. A buddy of mine and I bought ours together, so they threw in oil drain pans, and I was given a military veteran discount. There may have been some improvements made on the design and/or construction since I bought mine, but that's a huge price increase. I watched a live demo at the Tomahawk, WI Fall Ride in 2011, and I had to have one. If you haven't seen the videos of what they do on bikes while raised on the jack, check them out, it's a trip! J & S is an amazingly stable jack.

Great review! I’ve owned the J&S jack for 4 years and would recommend it for sure. My only issue is the bottle jack they use, it will leak from the pump stem. Ive gotten the same bottle then drilled it for mounting. It also leaks and the only way it won’t is to immediately put it on the stops and relieve the pressure. There are times (changing tires) where it must be raised and lowered several times before using the safety stops. I have learned to keep an eye on this and never store it without a shop towel under the bottle. This is a great jack and I’ve done a lot of work on my bike as well as my brothers Wide Glide. Also, it is one of the only jacks wide enough to safely use on Dynas as it doesn’t require any special adapter for the Dyna frame.

I have had a J&S Jack for a litter over 3 years and while the jack itself is sturdy and well built, I use it 2-3 times a month to clean wheels etc. The bottle jack is terrible, the first one started leaking around the valve, I called J&S and they sent out a new one, now just last week, I had my bike on it to remove the wheels to have new tires mounted, I reinstalled the wheels and it would not jack up to take it off the locks, I had to take a floor jack to jack it up to release the locks, so now I need a second new bottle jack, I will probably look elsewhere for a new bottle jack.

Fantastic video comparison. Curiosity question...would you store one of your motorcycles on either of those jacks on the 1st safety, just to have the bike upright for more room, as opposed to leaned on the kickstand and the wheel turned? My Electra Glide Standard has a center stand and I get more room around the bike of it being on the stand as opposed to the kickstand. We are looking to store our 3 bikes and my Acadia all in one carport and still be able to get in and out of the car.
