In this video, I explain why I believe many riders are apprehensive about turning their handlebars while riding at low speeds and why many fear locking their handlebars.
You may be asking yourself, what are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Practice sessions are usually held on a weekly basis (Saturday or Sunday) in Pooler, GA. These sessions are free of charge to V.I.PRELOADERS ONLY. THERE ARE ONLY TEN (10) SPOTS AVAILABLE PER PRACTICE SESSION. THESE TEN (10) SPOTS WILL BE FILLED BASED ON THE ORDER IN WHICH I RECEIVE EMAIL RESERVATIONS. Lt. you're awesome. Out of all the MC instructors on KZbin, and I consider you and two others to be outstanding, you're the only one that has fully explained the fundamentals of turning the handlebars to maintain slow speed balance, and especially in tight close quarter turns, and U-turns. I've always been reluctant to utilize the handlebars to the full extent. Wish I was in GA for some one on one individual instruction. I am confident after 3 months because of listening to and watching Robert and putting in so many hours of practice I lost count. Ease into these exercises, start with wider u turns etc until you feel that friction zone and rear brake and how applying the brake and power keeps you easily up, rather than making you feel you might go down. Let the bike do the work, keep a positive attitude, and you will get it sooner rather than later. Roberts rules and exercises are free here, but invaluable with practice. You guys can all do it if I can! Thanks Robert so much!

Just bought my first Harley this past weekend, 2006 Road King and I need all the I can get. I've rode street bikes all my life turned 62 decided to get me a Harley Davidson ....and I love it. I love this video, I'm the one who thinks if I squeeze that front brake the back is coming up lol. thanks so much for your analogy lol.

I'm not being a smartass but if you are using your front brakes on slow speed you will go down . I only use my front to slow in combination with the rear from 55-30 then after that the rear. So if you use the front mainly you are more likely to have major issues at slow speed and at high speed that back tire is levered upward because the front is digging deep in the fork and then like the bicycle you can almost instantly be sol. I honestly hope you typed in the wrong thing by mistake.

I found that when DON'T preload on a slow speed approach to a stop, my balance is off. But when I DO preload in the same situation, it is easier to keep my motorcycle upright and creep. Power to the rear wheel is key!!

Hi. I’m a little older but bought my dream bike at the beginning of august and did msf august 21 and 22. I took the bike to this place basically next door before the course, and after, and I followed his guidance on my own for hours and hours. First, my msf instructors had preplanned exercises all geared to get you to pass the evaluation on day two, to get the card for the dmv. There was very little of what Robert teaches involved, so I was glad I had already found his channel and started slowly with his steps to riding this way. At msf I was a 6 ft guy on a tiny bike with instructors who had a schedule to keep. All geared toward preparing for the evaluation, not making me an expert rider. There was good exercises and good information, and I am glad I went. But I spent hours and hours on my own working my butt off on what Robert said, with determination and a positive attitude. I got my endorsement but learned little from msf. Because of the hours I did of easing into Roberts advice I can throw the 840 pound motorcycle around like a toy now. Don’t be disappointed if msf doesn’t work like these videos, just use it as a building block and put in a lot of work on your own in a safe environment, and soon you will be getting out in the real world with confidence, the boss of your new bike. Two days ago, I was on a busy highway in Ocala and because of the location I had to whip a tight uturn to head home, and this practice and Roberts rules made it easy. The engine is going to keep you up, keep you from feeling like falling, with the clutch and rear brake, he’s totally right. Good luck and happy safe motorcycling!

In the cycling world we call it track standing. I use it on my bicycle all the time especially at stop signs. On a bicycle it is easier while standing with the wheel cocked one way or the other. If I need a little bit more balance in I give it a short pedal less than an 1/8 of a rotation. (Power to the rear wheel). I am a first time motorcycle rider and am seeing a lot of similarities to bicycles and motorcycles. My bike weighs 17# and going to an almost 500# motorcycle has been intimidating. I know it’s in my head but it is a struggle. Thanks for all of your instructions and confidence building. You are my number 1 go to for learning to ride.

I want to thank you again Robert for the cornering tips, I find myself actually turning more sharply than I need to, and having to correct for over turning! It's actually a confidence builder. The 2nd thing I want to say another reason you preload is pure, simple physics. Remember in science class when the teacher spun up a bicycle tire and balanced it from just one end of the axle? That is centrifical force, that's what keeps the bicycle tire upright. Now picture your motorcycle's massive flywheel, well below the center of gravity, spinning at 2,000 RPM, much faster than that bicycle tire, that's the major factor that keeps the motorcycle upright at slow speed. Your bike couldn't fall down if it wanted to! It's the rider unput that makes the bike fall! Thanks again, and keep it up.

I'm in the small percentile of riders that has a motorcycle with a dry clutch. Meaning, the clutch is identical to an automobile's. I can still preload no pressure, no issues. I Like the analogy of the "tripod" makes sense if you think about it. With the front wheel turned, you have more contact patch in the horizontal or close to horizontal position.

Balance on a bike standing still is called a track stand. Typically used by sprinters on bank turns of track cycling. The start of the race is when one cyclist starts moving forward. So the sprinter who does this the best gains the advantage of drafting off of his opponent and saving energy for final sprint attack to win. Most cyclist do put their left foot down in road cycling for two reasons. The right is typically more dominant and preferred starting in traffic and to prevent falling over in traffic if ever an emergency stop is needed in traffic. Your demonstration made me realize why it's easy for me to put left foot down being new to motorcycle. I already have muscle memory of putting my left foot down first. Cycling also makes it easier to have road awareness because I'm used to watching while riding in a 3 foot space between passing cats and parked cars or curb and drains and potholes. I agree totally! Slow speed riding is harder than many people care to admit. I’ve been riding a dyna super glide for the last three years which is a step above a sportster but i bought a street glide and man what a difference especially when moving slowly

Thanks Robert great advice it was a beautiful week here in New Brunswick Canada was out on the wing about Three times this week and practiced every time yesterday stopped at a coffee shop and there was a few bikes in the parking lot and a parking spot in between some bikes any other time I would park somewhere else I made a unturn keeping it preloaded foot on the break and bolth feet on the pegs and parked in between the other bikes it shouldn't be a big deal but I felt a little proud of myself self and felt like saying Robert Simmons taught me that Thanks my friend have a wonderful weekend

Here in the Philippines about half of everybody rides a motorcycle. They would never take a skills course. They all think it's easy. All the bikes are small (usually 125cc to 155cc). Mine is considered a "big bike", though it is a Honda Rebel 500. Anything as big or bigger than my bike is exceedingly rare here and is only for the ego boost of the owner. Though I've been riding in the states since 1975, I actually need to bone up on skills. That's because of the terrible roads and drivers here. So, when it's not raining or didn't rain recently, I like to go out to the airport to an old runway to practice. The surface is rough concrete, but consistent. There are patches of sand. So, I'm afraid of slipping on it. But I think that if I keep trying I'll learn how to ride on this surface. I have to since most roads are like this. I plan to take some cones out there next time. My wife is deathly afraid of me having a bike. That's because she has been a nurse and has seen many motorcycle-related injuries. Most intersections are uncontrolled, but the drivers of all vehicles wouldn't obey a stop sign anyway. Motorcyclists are reckless here as are the other vehicle drivers and when they wreck, they often die. They don't fasten their helmets if they even wear them. They don't use any protective gear. They wear flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts, and no gloves. They pass everyone on the left and right and lane split all the time. I could go on and on. This is only the tip of the iceberg of problems. But though I'm 69, I just won't give up motorcycling.

Today I dropped my brand new Interceptor 650 twice! I was not moving but I locked the handlebar to the right both times as I used to do with the lightweight scooters. This is my first heavy bike. Now I am scared when I have to take a slow turn to the right. I am riding scooters and lightweight bikes (~100-120kgs) since 16 years and i thought i could handle this 200 kg bike but today i got my lesson. I guess I will have to ride more and then I will get used to this.

Appreciate this video, bro. I'll tell you something I did a month ago. I was transferring duty stations and I had rented a trailer from uhaul to move it up to where I am working now. Well, uhaul called me the morning of and said they had no trailers and didn't give a shit about helping me out. Needless to say, I was really mad because I had to get packed and moved. Well, stupid me tried loading the bike inside the truck driving up the loading ramp. BIG MISTAKE!!! I lost power 3/4 of the way up the ramp and dumped it from about 4 feet in the air. Did $10k of damage. I was pissed and now I don't have the bike for NLT 4 months!!! So, my lesson is, if you don't have the right equipment, don't try loading your motorcycle in a truck.
