As someone who sometimes wears a mermaid suit, the hand thing is to orient yourself and because it feels really weird and stiff to keep your arms at your sides when you are bent forward. You kind of want to let them hang down but then they cause drag and slow you down. So, swordfish style it is.

Do you do fabric ones? The fabric drags but the silicone ones don’t as much. The silicone ones are crazy powerful too. The fabric ones can be awkward and I have to try to look mermaid like. The silicone ones just sort of naturally flow and I feel magical. 🧜🏻‍♀️ if you are able to I highly recommend getting a silicone one. They are expensive though.

We’ve got flippers to go snorkelling sometimes but usually I ditch the snorkel and just grab the flippers coz I prefer to swim under water anyway, but I can’t lie, swimming like that really does help propel you forward! …also my view on this may be quite skewed as I’m pretty sure I’ve swum like this ever since I watched H2O as a child 😅🤣

Their tails were handmade and specifically moulded to each of them. I remember watching one of the behind the scenes videos that said the tails were made out of a bunch of different materials like silicone and nylon and plastic. Which is why the tails are really heavy, especially in water - so the arms are to help them orient and give them more power in the movements I think!
@crazygamer_1082
@crazygamer_1082 11 ай бұрын
No I think they mentioned in a video they’re heavy out of the water. But a lot lighter in the water. Especially when you think that if it’s difficult for them to maneuver in the water. It would be even more difficult to get those underwater shots. So they made the tails to be more lightweight under the water. I only remember this because I think one of the girls talking about the tails. And she was saying how the minute she gets onto land with the tail it’s literally impossible to move, but it’s so much easier once she’s in the water.

If you don't know how to swim, you might just flail underwater and not actually move in the direction you want to go to, and even if you do, you might be extremely slow. Plus if she doesn't swim typically, she might not be used to holding her breath either. Emma said 20 seconds, but she had been practicing swimming competitively.

This pilot is f*cking gold. I relate to basically every character on screen. Their dynamic is perfect. Cleo, the shy, anxious mess with the heart of gold with some hillarious quotes. Basically every teen can feel for her. Emma, the natural leader, knowledgeable, but sometimes cynical and cold. The ultimate responsible older sister who forgets that she is not always right. The voice of reason, except when she lets emotions rule her. Rikki, the free-spirited goth girl who is used to being forgotten and ignored, who buildt the shield of toughness to hide her loneliness and feelings of not belonging, who is not always socially-aware, but untimatelly loyal and brave friend. And of course, Lewis, probably one of the most beloved character ever put on TV. I did not met a single person who disliked him. His relationship with the girls is wonderful, his dynamic with each is different and cute. And of course, there is Zane and his redemption arch. Season 1 is flawless. Season 2 is flawed, but great. Season 3 feels like the writers did not realize (or forgot) what worked and why was the show so beloved.

Mermaid tails are HEAVY like 7-18Kg (15-40lbs) for most professional tails. They are usually made of silicone. When you have something that heavy and constricting on your lower body it is incredibly hard to swim and keep afloat. You can’t kick your legs or really move them much other than up and down. If I remember correctly the cast actually had to do training to learn how to properly swim in those tails, because without training you could very easily drown. (That actually almost happened to me the first time I tried a silicone mermaid tail. It was so heavy and I didn’t know how to move so I started to sink and I couldn’t swim back up) Anyways, if you have your arms at your side or dangling it’s even harder to move, as they’ll create drag. Having your hands out makes it easier to not only swim, but also change direction. Even professional mermaids swim with their arms out like that. So yes, swordfish style is the way to go.

I watched it as a kid too, it is from the same creator and it features Liam Hemsworth as the love interest in season 1, now famously known as Miley Cyrus's ex who she has written about a lot, also Margot Robbie, was in 2 episodes as a shapeshifted version of a character.

Lewis is a king! Loved watching you react to this. One mild critique is that we only see the perspective of that one drop landing on Rikki, but that was the first before the sprinkler moved and doused her in water.

The spinoff Mako Mermaids felt like a reboot. (Different cast of characters and it focuses on natural born mermaids instead of converted human girls, but it feels like a replacement for the old show overwriting everything that came before with new lore.) Up until that one episode in a later season where Rikki got a cameo, establishing that there actually is a connection between the two shows and the new one has somehow been a sequel all along. There was also an animated remake of H2O, which follows some of the same story beats as the original show while also changing a ton of things and leaning heavier into the underwater fantasy of it that could never really be captured in live action on a limited budget. I think an image of Mako Island was shown briefly in an episode of Bureau of Magical Things, the newest show from the same people who made H2O / Mako Mermaids. It's questionable whether or not that meant anything though. I don't think they've officially established any connection to those shows yet.

@@MuljoStpho Being a Jonathan M. Shiff fan since Cybergirl which almost no one knows about and only seeing like the opening of Ocean Girl (which was the first series he created and kind of hard to find these days), I've seen almost series the UFO man himself has worked afterwards on from obscure like Horace and Tina or Pirate Islands series to the popular like The Elephant Princess, Lightning Point, Wicked Science and some have their own OST as well.

Ah, this show makes me nostalgic! Catchy theme song, weird magic powers, full moon shenanigans, ✨mermaids✨, and Luis being the ultimate MVP of this group as a sassy nerdy best friend. Though Cleo’s sister was super annoying, could not stand her.

So this might be a bit obscure, but there was a German-Australian production called Emma's Chatroom that I really liked. And the only other country besides Germany, where I can imagine people knowing about it, is Australia. Who here knows about it?

I’d love to see you watch more of this. There is indeed a lot of nostalgic value, but also looking back, it has some really high points… just in the form of a teenage drama lol. There is also a surprising amount of lore and established rules. Kinda reminds me of the Power Rangers, which makes sense I suppose since they’re from the same era. While I have no idea about the recent mer-man series, I do recall the first series being really good, so I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us did! :D

I know it’s an Australian show but it was super popular in America! I think every girl played pretend mermaid in the pool at some point in their life … I still do 😂 one of my favorite things about this show is how realistic their friendship is. Like the first episode they are annoyed of each other. But eventually bond rather than trying to change each other

The rules with water are essentially Ranma 1/2 rules, except with drying off instead hot water to change back. I think she was hit by more than one drop, the camera just focused on that one for dramatic effect.

I grew up on this show. I didn't even know English when I watched it. I would stay up until 11pm (which is a lot when you are 8/9 years old) to watch it on the only channel that had it with subtitles. I loved it so much and as soon as I learned enough English the first thing I did was watch this show. I'd love it if you reacted to the rest of the show.

Also coming from someone who’s done competitive swimming, using your arms like that is actually effective with or without a fun, especially when swimming dolphin style, it helps you glide and stay streamline as well as guide the rest of your body and movements. If you tried to do it without your hands it’s actually difficult to move, hope this rant helps lol!

when you talked about the magnetic field of water I laughed because in the show it actually happened. i am pretty sure it was in s1 or 2 but there was a costume competition and cleo was a jellyfish. water just started flying at her because the brother of emma and the sister of cleo thought that Miriam and cleo and emma and rikki were mermaids. cleo stoped the water from falling on her

If you like this you'd love Mako Mermaids, the spin-off/same universe series. I liked Mako Mermaids better cause there's a merman and there's more about the mythology. Also, your "Do they come from the sea?" comment becomes relevant in that show!
