Contamination is a massive pain in the sphincter! I spent 13 years painting new cars - the lengths they go to in order to prevent any contamination getting into the shop is truly next level. Fish eye breakouts caused a veritable shitstorm! QA scientists cutting out fisheyes taking it to the internal lab and scanning them to determine the cause, working directly with PPG in some cases where it was found to be reactions between films (eg. primer > base reactions). Serious attention to detail on cleanliness within the paintshop - only clean overalls in the shop, entry exit through clean room air washes - both at the entry to the shop then to each and every booth. The money they were spending on prepsol and the microfibre cleaning rags and tack rags used to ensure the panels were absolutely clean before each coating mustve been phenomenal - bloody glad I wasnt paying for it! 😀 Full downdraft booths, 6 feet above constantly running water - the best of the best!

When bleeding water and contamination from an air line you have to remove the quick connect and let the full volume of air thru the line, your spray gun orifice will not move enough air to get residual moisture and/or oil from your hose. If you have oil for sure in your hose pour a degreaser in the hose and flush it with full volume of air👍

When I first started painting in my garage, I was getting tiny fish eyes all the time, especially on horizontal surfaces. Finally, the lady at the paint shop told me to eliminate ALL petroleum based products from the space. And she followed that up by saying EVERYTHING HAS GOT TO GO. She even said to not store it outside in a place which could contaminate the air coming into the space through the compressor. Even closed bottles. She said that when we move air in a space, and even worse when we are spraying, we are unknowingly kicking dusty air up and into our intake on our compressor. She told me that particulates of these products can make their way into the air being sucked into the compressor and water separators or filters might not catch it. In other words, do EVERYTHING you can to remove ANY chance of petroleum products in your paint space or in the area around the paint space. Guess what, I did that, and haven’t had one single fish eye since then. The proof is in the pudding. So what if the whole car having some petroleum products all under it and in the engine compartment? Don’t just mask the wheels. Makes the wheelwells. And mask the engine compartment by way of every hood gap and the cowl area and grille as well. Then, mask to the floor, as simply the movement of air from spraying will kick up oils that could be on your drivetrain under the vehicle. It worked for me. Honestly, at first I thought she was full of crap. I was wrong. At that, I’ve NEVER heard any other giver of advice even mention such an issue. No one. Ever. How could this be? And how could this be while she was so right? Take heed brethren, the open mind gathers facts as well as fiction. Learn to filter the fiction as your oil and water separators do, and what’s left is the good stuff. For the record, our man Brian here is by far the best I can find about having accurate info. Top notch. It may have been the fact that the rig simply wasn’t “broken in” enough to remove residual coatings meant to preserve the various products while they sit in a hot and humid warehouse somewhere, or even on the ship going across the ocean. Humid much? Also, I’m in Charleston, just as humid as FLA. it gets old, but compared to a dusty desert barren of our naturally beautiful wetlands, I’m not going anywhere. I have to use a dehumidifier in my garage for a couple of days before spraying and I put great effort into keeping the space closed up to keep outside humid air outside. Problem is that the dehumidifier makes heat, so the air conditioner needs to run, which means the filters need to be changed almost all the time. It’s a cycle but with discipline can be beat. So, you said you wanted to paint your car yourself? Get ready for heartache and failure. It will happen. Be ready to persevere and know when to stop and reconsider alternatives. Been there, done that. My dad just got his. 2018 Expedition back from the shop after a front end collision rebuild. The paint work looks top notch. Panel alignment was ….not good. To me, the mechanical parts are cake compared to grasping all of the chemistry and physics involved with paintwork. Not for the faint of heart or the cash poor. In fact, I had a recent project take almost a year because of cash, space, time, and failure issues . It was an ongoing nightmare which met my tenacity and desire for a good product. I f’ing sanded that damned Mercedes ML320 hood to bare metal more times than I kept track of.

You had a big collection of goobers on the door. I think that is where you started spraying on the first paint job. Something left inside of the plumbing of your air system. Maybe the thing to do is to run some paint on something safe before you jump into a project.

I bought a GorrillasPro Paint booth exactly like this one. I’ve painted 3 cars in this booth. The first car I got fish eyes knowing full well that everything was very clean and filtered. After many hours of testing with small parts I found that normal drying times between coats was not enough. I was going to comment on your first video but figured you would find out the issue. Bottom line is this: You will get awesome paint jobs out of this booth BUT…..you have to wait 1 hour between coats. ALL COATS. Even your clear. If you don’t, you will have issues that may require a full redo. I’m confident that your issues were the same as mine. Solvent trap and solvent fish eyes due to not waiting long enough cure times between coats. This booth requires a lot longer time between coats. If you do that, you’ll be good to go. When I saw your first video….I literally laughed out loud because I had gone through the exact same this with the exact same booth. Glad you figured it out. And by the way, I was using a Fuji Spray HVLP scroll system and knew there was no moisture. It’s the booth. Just start letting it dry a lot longer between coats.

@StageShout
@StageShout 6 ай бұрын
@khalid95eG it depends on how each coat was applied on the part. Outgassing takes two things...air flow and time. In my case, it was just figuring out the booth air flow for the paint to outgas properly. If you spray on top, depending on the solvent, reducer and / or paint product, you can get a solvent crater or fish eye. Or...you can get micro bubbles. The thickness over the part depends on how you sprayed that part. Secondly, air in this booth "hits" areas of the car. So some areas of the vehicle get more air than others. Simply put in my scenario it wasn't a contaminant. It was a outgassing time that needed to be extended. I used sample parts to figure it out. Spraying them normally and by the manufacture wait time between coats. When I changed the wait time to longer....instantly solved the fish eye issue. Fish eye is not always contaminants left on the part. Outgassing that is trapped becomes a contaminate because you trap it with the next coat. It can't escape. Forms a Mico bubble or...in some cased a crater.

as a sprayer myself for the passed 11 years i totally knew how you felt when it came to round 2, i spray a lot at home and it's a totally different game compared to a booth, time is key. i let everything flash longer then i normally would as when i've rushed at home i've always killed my jobs, mainly reactions. also your dry coat then 2 wet coats we call Grip and Rip. also i don't have room for a big blow up booth, i just build a tent with polly roll ahah

In Russia, small workshops came up with the idea of using main water filters of the SL10 format to remove drops of oil and condensate from the air line. From the compressor there is a long spiral hose in which the air cools and moisture condenses, then an SL10 flask with a 5 micron polypropylene filter, but the upper part of the cartridge is sealed and the space between the flask and the cartridge is filled with silica gel. I have this done, it works perfectly and costs less than $20 in your money. I hope this will help novice painters with their own workshop. Then you can install a better system, but after 5 years I have no complaints about this surrogate. Unless you need to take high-quality flasks, otherwise they may explode)

Fantastic color, love it. I'm glad it came out the way it did. I have a 3M GVP-CB PAPR system (fresh air helmet, very large expensive filters) that I used painting aircraft and vehicles. Yes, no matter what PAPR system you use is great. You only have one set of lungs! I happen to know a painter in the 80's that used a small mask in a booth and he's no longer with us (died many, many years ago). You couldn't tell the old guys anything! This was when they only had 2 types of paint and came out with a 3rd type (acrylic enamel with hardener). You do great work and make great videos. Stay safe. Thank you.

To test if any oil is left in compressor air lines, use shiny black and clean piece of plastic or metal instead of white paper towel. Usually after 10-15 seconds you can see that fine oil mist build up which does not dry, indicating its actual oil. It would take ages to be seen on a paper towel. Just watched the whole video, it came out really good, well done :)!

Thanks, love that you tackle problems like this. Feel frustrated though... what is the upshot? We need to go out an buy expensive compressor, filtration, air heating and water removing systems? Or just take some time between coats? If the former, no need to dyi, just hand it over to professionals and give up on channels like this. Really prefer when problem solving is done by one element at a time so that we can actually learn. You solved your problem and that is great. Too bad we didn't really learn much.

I love painting. What I’ll never love is my processes before and during every single job are the same. My results aren’t and that’s so frustrating. I know that I know how to do it. I can lay down a perfect gun finish but some are spotless and others are full of dirt. I don’t have an issue with fisheyes thankfully but I have in the past and it turned out the thinner I was using was nasty recycled stuff. Changed that and haven’t had any since

Great videos, thanks. There are some really nice oilless/oil free compressors out there. SCHULZ makes some nice high output piston type models. Also keeping the pressure in the lines/hoses to a minimum helps stop condensation. I keep mine at 60psi and raise the psi only when needed and I have never had moisture in my air lines. At a place I worked they kept it about 120psi in the lines around the shop and there was always water in them.

Great vid. I remember the how did I and how do I get rid the fisheyes many moons ago.😂😂 a few things 1-only use water Bourne cleaner on plastic and fiberglass parts, it could cause a static fire, and it has happen, it could also cause static on parts and attract dirt to it. 2-the dryer, turn on right before you turn on your compressor, we leave ours on all time but we are a production shop, also make sure you blow it out, front to back, keeps the coils and parts from clogging up with dust and over heating and stop working. 3-that little white piece is a filter, use it. The water trap filters on top of compressor may need changing more then recommend depending on how much you use it. 4-your right, avoid using fisheye eliminator when ever possible, it may have fixed the issue with the car but wouldn’t have fixed the issue with the air and future jobs. 5-glad you were able to figure out what caused the issue, & found extra clear on the door, now you know how good it flows😂😂👍

Thanks for watching! I tell you having Fisheyes can really bring you down, especially when you don’t know where they’re coming from! Thanks for your tips on the dryer. I was unsure about that. That water base cleaner tip is really important. Ty for tha!

Brian , thank you for your reply with my comment. I personally believe that the issue was a combo of application time and air supply contamination. I have personally have experienced the same issues in the past. I have many friends,well known in the finishing and refinishing business. They are the professionals and still ask me for my input and advice. I hope to meet you one day , Russe Castro of Currently Big Bear City,Ca.

I had a nightmare fisheye issue when painting a friends car. Tried everything, cleaning, fisheye additive... turns out I had oil in the hose from years of neglect since it wasnt being used for painting and the excess oil was in the hose. Replaced the hose along with clean filter and no more issues.

Hey man! I'm a 2nd year autobody technician and I just wanted to say you might want to do your chemical wash first then your waterbase wash. Reason being is the tail solvents can take a bit to evaporate specially since your applying it right to the panel and cause you fish eye or even delamination later on.

I have been running the centrifugal drip can like yours and then a spin on water separator filter in front of about 1 1/2 gallons of desiccant beads. I got the idea from my boat. It came with a fuel/water separator and I use the same Yamaha brand. I change the spin on filter about once a month. If I wait too long the filer will show rust and hold water that pours out when removed. Doing it's job. I have a mobile paint business for car dealerships so I am always filtering outside air. I really enjoy your videos and have employed some of your techniques...thanks.

One thing to note about the respirator. When you have facial hair, the longer it is, the more material is able to get in the mask. The fresh air would be a good move. Stay Safe! Keep up the great work brother!

I only watch this man, Brian is an honest teacher and humbly shares his findings with you from his own challenges. Thanx Brian for showing us all that in the paint world there's always something new to discover something new that happens and this is how you fix it through trial and error, a true gem ! It wasn't until I took your advice on about cleanliness and how you have to really make sure that you remove all of the debris and contaminants going to the car wash helped me and using alcohol wipes on my 4 runner and my paint job with rattle cans of all things , came out excellent only through the guidance of your videos and thank you again😊

Great video! I just painted my very first car (beetle) and I started with bare metal, I did a tri-coat pearl , I just used my 10 year old 60 gallon Recip compressor with and IR air dryer same as yours then right into my gun and I didnt have any fisheyes or contimation so I find it hard to believe that your system caused this issue because your system is WAY better than mine lol keep up the great channel. I learned so much from you and Im sure that was what made my job turn out so good. I forgot to mention , my air hoses are even old. I used a Harbor freight blackwidow gun and I had an inflatable paint booth. just wiped it down with water and prep mixed

The final filter in my air system is a long steel tube filled with kitchen towel rolls. The air has to travel length wise through three lengths of paper towel end on end. Takes out all residual moisture and any oil. Cheap and works.

Hey Brian…I use one of those dryers at work. I don’t use it for painting, I use it for a digital printing press. When I had it installed the guy from Ingersoll Rand said to basically leave it on. It doesn’t work or really use much power if no air is running thru it. I turned it on a few months ago and it’s been running 24/7 since with no issues.

This makes me feel better about my struggles! I'm using clear coat to seal fiberglass molds....and I finally decided to just pay a painter until I can solve all the problems, like a booth, ventilation, good respirator, etc... I don't think my compressor was a problem, but I'll add that to the list!

The oil looked exactly like water contamination. During high humidity times, if you don't have an extra drying system, you will have water contamination of some sort. My experience with a rotory air compressor has had a lot of the same problems, but only during monsoon season here in Las Vegas.

I had this issue years ago. I learned that these booths create a positive charge when deflated that tightly cling to dust particles. Then when in use the atomized paint evens out the polarity causing the dust to fall gradually. Idk why but I got tired of it. I just went back to the basics of painting outside.

If you can afford it, i highly recommend an anti-static gun. It helps a TON, especially on raw plastic or plastic in general. You could go the cheaper route and buy a anti- static spray, but you want to be careful using it where basecoat will not be applied. I didnt wipe it off properly or fold the rag to a fresh spot and had wiping streaks.
