Can we just conclude that Piastri has almost the best curriculum of the F2 era and should be treated as a golden rookie like Leclerc and Russell? Imo he should only be below rookie Verstappen in hype.

Piastri is amazing, but his competition sucked. Luckily, his junior formula competition doesn’t matter when he’s doing fantastic in F1. There’s always been an F2 even if it was called something else. So, it makes no sense to put F2 into its own box.

@@wassapdude94 this! as bad as it was to go through the first half of the season in a terrible car, for Piastri it was a blessing in disguise. kept him out of the cameras, and let him get comfortable away from the front of the pack. not saying he wouldn't have hit the floor running on a good car but expectations where lowered due to the car and less pressure on a rookie is always a good thing.

Answering your question: Well, here in Spain, Fernando is more than a driver. He is an icon and his fans are beyond loyal and passionate. In a country that loves football and has guys like Nadal, the biggest movement around and athlete goes to Fernando by a wide margin. Carlos is oftenly criticized and meme material and he is not close at all to Alonso BUT we love him too and as soon as he recovers (first half of 2022 was really harsh) people will support him like in the McLaren days, maybe more. The support he got during Monza weekend was unreal.

I also prefered Nico, but RB had the data that proved Checo was the more consistent of the two and had slightly more pace over Nico in race trim. If Checo didn't lose his seat in RP, Nico would've been Max his teammate for 2021. Also Checo's win in Shakir solidified this decision. Red Bull has been open about all of this.

I've always thought reuniting Max and Carlos would be an interesting duo now that they have both significantly developed from the Toro Rosso days. Carlos doesn't seem to be quite as far down the Ferrari rabbit hole as Charles so he'd be slightly more attainable and I'd see him as something very similar to the 2018 Ricciardio that Red Bull would be hoping to get if they brought Daniel back.

If I was RBR I would make a go for Piastri over Norris, for the simple fact that the team needs to start thinking not only of having a power pairing, but of grooming not a competitor but a SUCCESSOR for Max. It’s not too early, not at all and Max loves Motorsport not just F1 and has made that clear. But Hulk as a solid number 2? Yes please! If they go that route, Hulk would be a perfect pairing and they do have a great relationship and even friendship.

Feel like you’ve missed on the Mercedes take. I think the thing that separates Lewis and George from Lewis & Nico is that they have these little moments but they’re completely fine after the race. George just has this confidence that he’ll beat Lewis. Where as Nico showed more fragility. And with Bottas it nearly consumed him.
@e.1067

George has that confidence because he knows that eventually, Lewis will retire. They have a 10+ year age gap, and people will take his losses against Lewis as "what did you expect, he's a 7×wdc" while he learns from Lewis. Nico didn't have that, him and Lewis were relatively the same age, and Nico got his heir of Mercedes got taken by Lewis, if he let Lewis win, it was game over.

As a Shwartzman fan, he's never making it to F1. Not because of he did anything bad, as he won F3 as a rookie and finished F2 5th as a rookie and 2nd in his second season. But it has been 2 years without racing. I still think he could be a great driver for Ferrari's Hypercar team as he always showed how consistent and how few mistakes he did or that he could be a good driver at Indycar or Formula E. But for F1, that Haas seat is never going to a rookie again.

I think Ferrari in general hasn't done the best with its reserve driver/academy situation. He's both underrated and overrated by fans here in Spain. There are fans that say that he is nowhere near Charles and others that say that he is the N°1 driver. But after Fernando retires, he will be, without a doubt, the star of Spain in F1, and not because of his surname. I don't get the Russell shafting in a lot of these videos. For multiple races now, when he's DNFed, it's been from in front of Lewis, either from mechanical/strategy failure or just being shafted. Like, hes been left out on old tyres twice in a row at LEAST now, and he is directly being pressured by Lewis CONSTANTLY to back down and concede, at the cost of team points time and time again. It's a classic tale. Russel out on old old tyres, Lewis with a better strategy behind him in the final laps, and Lewis can't get around despite several weaker cars doing so, then either lewis shoves him off, the tyres finally lock, or whatever, and everyone moans that "HE SHOULD HAVE LET HIM BY TO CHASE" despite Lewis never having the pace to do so. Like, really? If Lewis cannot pass George, how on earth do you think Lewis can get by and pass the guy who passed George? It doesnt line up at all, and the time charts show it. It's just a tussle for power, and whenever george has been in the inverse scenario, I cannot recall Lewis moving, and most people hate on George for complaining exactly how Lewis did. The points do lie this season. George isn't significantly behind Hamilton aside from crucial issues, both due to the car and due to strategy. HORRID qualifying in which Lewis backed him up, leading to him going out in Q1 because mercades decided to take a huge risk for zero reason with good pace? Constant shafting on strategy, where George again and again has had to make up for unfortunate circumstances and bad pits, going up from his quali position consistently, etc. Again, I'm not claiming he's the better driver, but the venom with which people have gone to tearing George apart constantly at every opportunity is sickening when he's just doing his job, WELL. It seems like a lot of Mercades fans are Lewis fans, and concessions are only expected to go one way. George isn't bottas. Everyone should be happy about that, to see better even racing like the 2016 everyone so fondly claims to remember now. I like to see fast drivers in fast cars, and it sucks how often george is shafted in public opinion despite consistently showing up and doing the absolute maximum with his car, even in spite of all the misfortune and team lean against him.

Alonso + Lewis at Aston would work. Both have matured so much since 2007 and they are in a similar position hunting for their final title where mutual sympathy would make them fine with sharing a 1-2. Both of their achievements and skills demand incredible respect from one another and the commercial value of the pair would be the strongest in F1. With Merceses underperforming and Aston's huge investments and results this season it's not even that impossible of a move for Lewis to consider.

The only driver on the current grid that I can see getting close to the current top 3 (in no order Hamilton, Verstappen and Alonso) within a few years would be Piastri. There are a lot of other good drivers on the grid, but I don't see much growth in them. Piastri in his rookie season is already getting close to Norris. It wouldn't surprise me if he is faster and more reliable in a 2 years compared to those other good drivers. From there the growth will naturally slow down. He might not bring in as much money as some other drivers, but in the end the teams want to score as much points as possible.

I'd argue that Alfa Romeo/Sauber wouldn't really have anything to gain by shaking things up before it changes over to Audi and it's a solid if unremarkable pairing, in a tractor of a car; might just be the pairing to quietly go through the Sauber years and make driver changes when it becomes Audi for 2026

It worked well, it might work well later, but right now at ferrari Leclerc is just in pain, I feel like the 2 last races are more a demonstration of leclerc's weakness then sainz's strenght. I think Alex and Max need a round 2 together ever since Alex's huge improvements. They both seem to get the most of their respective cars, granted Alex is in a Williams and Max is in a Red Bull. However, Alex is putting that Williams in places it should never be and I think just for that he deserves a better car. It would be interesting to see what Alex can pull off in one of if not the best car on the grid.

I get that Russell is unhappy with his status as you've said, and fighting for his place in the team and at the sport. However I've seen too many times already that his behavior (on track) negatively impact team simply by costing Lewis too much. As you've said title fight is one thing, but this is not even for podiums most of the times (or poles). Therefore I would love the see Hamilton and Sainz pairing in Ferrari, idk about Leclerc and Russell in Merc but that would be also at least very interesting if not anything else (although same problems would probably be there).

I think George to Aston would be an allround great move. George could get a couple of seasons next to Fernando and be ready to lead the team once Nando retires, and if AM were to bring in Tsunoda through the Honda connection in 2026 they'd have a real decent line up I think. Contracts are already signed however, oh well.

19:07 I'd say George had the perfect start to his time at Mercedes 19:48 I think their pinchpoints have been overblown quite a bit. Zandvoort 2022 was understandable since the race win was possible for both. And I think Spain and Belgium qualifying was just unfortunate timing, a bit like you said with Alpine at 11:24. And even if their relationship is as bad as you say, I think your weighing it too much because they're no way the worst pairing on the grid. They rank extremely highly in skill, experience and marketability. I don't understand how you can put them below Bottas and Zhou. 22:15 What? George was great in his first season at Mercedes. This season, he has made quite a few mistakes but he has gotten quite unlucky as well like the P2 he lost in Australia, the terrible strategy and then puncture in Zandvoort and the issues in qualifying in Austria and Hungary which makes it look like he's miles off Lewis when that isn't the case.

Might need to tone down the recency bias a bit mate. Russell properly dominated Lando and Albon in equal cars. It's just the fact that Russell is against Hamilton that makes people forgot Russell is actually levels above Norris and Albon whom he dominated in equal cars. Moreover, there is a level of overhyping for both Norris and Albon due to the fact that they're having weaker teammates that makes them looks super fast in comparison. There's also the notion that "backmarker cars will always be backmarker cars, if it improves at all then it's the greatness of its drivers that push it" nonsense. People is just so easily overhyped over that nowadays. On a slightly unrelated note, this is why awesome midfield drivers frequently seemingly didn't perform as well. It's not because the pressure of a faster car, it's just that they're being exposed by top level drivers present in top teams. In case of Hulkenberg, he won't do much better than Perez. Hulkenberg is looking extraordinary rn is just because he's up against Magnussen.

There was a driver named Derek Wawrick who was a bad driver at Arrows in 90's. I heard in a magazine he was supposed to be Senna's team mate. Senna new how good Wawrick was so he wanted another team mate at Honda. So a superstar driver will not have a driver as good as them. Remember Senna V Prost. Just think what Wawrick would have done in a Honda. He would of had a better season. That means there are many drivers in back of the pack teams because no one has the balls to be their team mate in a big team.

Well, with a few more races since this video has come out, we can all say that Lando and Oscar are the paring of the year. Lando is great with pace, consistency, sponsorships, and a very charismatic, likable character. Oscar has shown stealer pace and consistency as well. Also, his demeanor and attitude are one of the race winners. I can see this being an issue a few years later, with Oscar gaining experience and 100% matching Lando. Everyone seems obsessed with the idea of Lando going to Red Bull. While I LOVE the idea of him being in the best car on the grid(at this moment in time)and his relationship with Max is incredibly tight making for a lovely relationship (OFF TRACK); Lando so terribly and desperately wants to win and be a world champion, and I'm willing to bet anything he knows as long as Max is at Red Bull and their car is as good as it is now, he will not be valued as a driver in contention for the World championship. I think he will stay with McLaren for the long haul (hopefully, they can keep up with Red Bull development-wise). As for Oscar, I like him a lot, but he's so young and new to F1 that it's hard to imagine what his career will look like 5 or 10 years down the line. But I have a feeling once Alsono or Hamilton retires; he is going to fill their spots. Oscar has 1st driver potential, and even though McLaren values both drivers and lets them fight for points, they have invested so much time and energy into Lando. Lando will be their 1st seat driver as long as he wishes to be with McLaren. It might honestly be best for Oscars career for him take a 1st spot seat at another team. (Id also like to get your thought on Oscar potentially at Red Bull, I think that might actually be an interesting dynamic)
