No Julian , don't be misled. It doesn't matter what you look like, what matters is what you identify as, as a culture. You are not Coloured because you are not born and raised in that race and culture as Coloured. People are misdirecting you. People who themselves don't know and think they know. My family is multiracial. Some identify as Coloured in my family, others as Black, others are mixed (black and white) but they don't identify themselves as Coloured. Its more than race in our country, it's a culture, its a way of life.

No don’t let ppl define your race. If you identify as black your black. And coloured is a whole culture. You have ppl with mixed parents who grew up in the black community who don’t identify as coloured but as black or mixed. Because, like I said coloured is a culture they have a language, food, culture (it’s a melting pot of Asian +African + European influences). Ppl who are simply born to a black parent white parent woulnt identify with. Conclusion stay firm in what you identify as and don’t change for ppl.
@brucebosch93622 жыл бұрын
This is a very confusing subject, especially since Black Americans also at some point identified as colored. Even my colored people are confused. For myself I break it down as follows : I identify as Black ( coz im not white) but my culture is colored. That works for me.

Because the shorthand to explain the word Coloured has been to simply say a "mixed race" population in SA , people will sometimes erroneously assume a person can be called "Coloured" as a substitute word for light-skinned, forgetting there is a cultural nuance to the term. Coloureds are people who are "generally" mixed *AND* (!!!) of a generally Afrikaans language-based (Dutch) culture. (A culture that mainly originated historically in the Asian Cape underclass.) Roughly 20% of Coloureds are functional English-speakers but are nevertheless from the same general Afrikaans-based peculiar cultural space. In the mid-twentieth century Coloured was a way to classify any person of colour *in the South African cultural context,* who was not a member of any native language/cultural group. *In practice this meant Asians, mixed race & black people who didn't speak any native tongue, but spoke Afrikaans.* People who were genetically mixed race but of an indigenous language/cultural group are not considered Coloured, nor are people from overseas.
