Hello Dear Noel, retired (by injury) Continental Airlines flight attendant here. The original seating in the mid 90's was a dark blue/black leather so these are definitely not the originals. Funny......as stews we LOVED the 500. 8 pax in FC and only about 100 in YC. The galley up front in FC where I worked was a dream....plenty of room for everything. We referred to it at CAL as the Barbie Dream Jet. As a fellow stew once said...."Love the 500. Just about the time you break a sweat, you're done." Happy travels, my friend. P.S. Finally, someone from outside Indonesia reviewed NAM air. I myself flown with them once back in 2018 from Yogyakarta, the only things I recalled about that flight is the fact that the flight got delayed by 3 hours from the intended 8 PM departure time (so much for that 92% OTP, thanks to the 11 PM departure time i slept just after takeoff, and only woke up once the plane had arrived), got the snack on ground thanks to said delay (got a bottle of water and some bread), the fact that I flew on PK-NAL, and the cabin being very retro looking (interestingly they merely use seat covers, as i believe i recall seeing Velcro on top of the seats). Thank god you flew in Business Class, Economy is even worse. My colleague beside me could barely even fit on the seat, heck even Lion Air had better seat pitch i think. Btw, the in-flight service you got is exactly the same as in Economy, since Biz on NAM (so does Sriwijaya Air, the parent, on its -500s) is merely just a seat upgrade you can get for like 100 - 200k IDR iirc. In conclusion: only fly with NAM Air if you want to fly on their 737-500s, otherwise just book with other airlines such as TransNusa, Pelita Air, and Super Air Jet, all 3 are brand new airlines in Indonesia, you will be fine with Citilink and AirAsia as well.

NAM is named after the Grandfather of the owner, Chandra Lie. His first name was Nam. He started the very first flight schools, crew training schools, and airplane maintenance schools in Indonesia. He also founded Sriwijaya Airlines. Both carriers fly old, previously owned, 737-500's but they are well maintained. One of the best Boeing maintenance facilities in Southeast Asia is located at Soekarno Hatta, Jakarta. Even Singapore Airlines contracts out to Garuda Boeing maintenance. NAM is not a airline with a Part 121 AOC. It's a Part 135 AOC Charter business. Thus, they must gain permission to fly that route from the Ministry of Transportation just days in advance. They can schedule flights, crew and sell tickets weeks in advance but they still must ask permission to fly just prior to departure.
@09shadowjet Жыл бұрын
The maintenance facility at Soekarno Hatta airport is owned by Garuda Indonesia, not Sriwijaya Air group who owns NAM Air. In fact, Sriwijaya Air group had a fallout with Garuda Indonesia. Also, one of Sriwijaya Group's 737-500 (PK-CLC) crashed last year, cause of the crash? Autothrottle failure leading to pilot error.

To fly the airplanes they would have to be maintained at a Boeing certified facility in Singapore, KL or Bangkok. And because of the age of the fleet, the DGCA would inspect and verify all work. (25 year rule) I doubt they parted with GM. It's easier to pay the money owed than to take the airplanes out of service and fly them to KL, Singapore or Bangkok. But, I'll have to check it out. 😀

Nice one Noel! Wow, didn't know that they still sell those seats as 'business class'. Anyhow, a 30 mins delay on NAM may be considered as an achievement. I flew them a few times in the past few years, all of them are delayed betwen 1 to 4 hours. One got delayed for five hours before we boarded and eventually DISEMBARKED since the destination airport is closed, and ofc the flight then got canceled. Today, they seems to operate two (or one?) aircraft only, with pretty high utilisation. Which ofc means high risk of disruptions. IMO, Lion Air is somewhat more reliable since they have more schedules, so in case of disruption you can be reaccommodated on other flights including either Batik or Super Air Jet operated flights.
@jjryan13522 жыл бұрын
How do you know if the delay is the airlines fault? It can be due to weather issues, flight congestion, lack of airport staff, waiting for connecting passengers, refueling, luggage loading issues. Wow, the comparison between the hotel and the airline is remarkable. Love the hotel lobby. Love it. So less sanitary that normal lobbies.

I am glad you survived the flight. I love your videos. To be fair, nobody died on the flight AND you got your luggage back. 😅😅 And regarding lack of service, I went on the Nam Air website after watching this and there is no mention on any service anyway. Can't really expect any then, lololol 😂😂😂 Can't wait for your next video.

I fly fairly frequently on 30 year old Fokker 100s, which are still buzzing around Western Australia. Same retro overhead panels.

I highly recommend you to fly with Pelita air or Transnusa, they both fly from Bali to Jakarta with brand new A320 and will give you a lot better service..

Actually Nam Air is a feeder Airline to Sriwijaya Air parent company. Not new, started operation in 2013. Terrible the way this crew do not take care of business class passenger .
@Dstew57A2 жыл бұрын
Hope Nam air sees this and does something about the unfriendly service and non existent safety procedures for the passengers.

Happened a lot more than we want to admit here in Indonesia, Business class with the taste of Economy class. But more than once also I've get Business class services in Economy class instead, apparently it depends on the airlines, and how they operate. But sure to say, you're very kind to other people, for that you've always have good karma. Thanks for visiting Indonesia, Noel. I've really enjoy your youtube contents.

Had that happen to me in Thailand last year and I only had 3 more days permission to stay in the country. Next available seat on a free replacement flight with the airline was 7 days away. I ended up going to Immigration and obtained a 30 day extension on my stay permission. Since I had the extra available time, I booked a flight 3 weeks later so all good as long as there was not another cancellation. I have an apartment in Bangkok so no extra hotel bills to pay. But I agree that flight cancellations are stressful.

I'm Indonesian and used commercial flights about 10-12 times every year. But I don't know anything about NAM Air, never in my boarding lists.
@GerryAirways2 жыл бұрын
Noel, Well, I never flew NAM Air, but I'm not surprised with your experience with them. What you experienced, probably explained how empty the cabin was! Looks like it's well on its way to bankruptcy... and the inflight catering for business... LOL! You can get more in economy on another airline on the same route!

Flew years ago with Merpati from Bali to Surabaya and on the return the previous flight was cancelled so they combined two flights but had printed seat numbers to the same people, so just told those coming on if their seat was taken to sit anywhere. A young girl came on and there was no seat for her so she sat behind the pilots. I was jealous.

Wow! Haven’t been following you that long, but I’ve watched a number of your back catalog and I’ve never heard you so disappointed with an airline. Even showed in how you said goodbye. As always polite,but that was it.

It's so 'unfortunate' you missed the Lion Air, it could be worst 😂😂. NAM Air is a group of Sriwijaya Air, a slightly better than Lion Air. Lion Air group consist of Lion Air (LCC), Wings Air (LCC/Regional) and Batik Air, you should try these airlines if you like 'emotion-challenge' 😁😁 For better experience, you can try Garuda Indonesia group, consist of Garuda Indonesia (flag carrier) and Citilink (LCC/Regional). Good luck with your next travel, and thank you for visiting Indonesia.
@icewomanL10 ай бұрын
I was just going to suggest the same! His experience with NAM was nothing comparing with my recent experience with Batik Air! My parents, my son and I all voted instantly and throughout the flight that it was the WORST flight we ever took. 🤣
@Arkensik Жыл бұрын
Wow it actually is the Continental Airlines interior all the signs and stuff are the same from what I remember.
I liked that gentleman at the end that wanted a selfie with you! He was nice. :) After a flight like that though, ANYTHING is nicer than that flight! LOL! That hotel room is BEAUTIFUL!

Noel, you're a brave man flying on a third-rate airline operating geriatric aircraft in a country whose aviation safety practises aren't up to industry standards. You're lucky you arrived in Jakarta safely.

I would like to say that there has been more Boeing 737 MAX that have crashed in Indonesia than 737-500s in the past couple of years……not the airlines fault though

Perhaps you should have stood on the seat like that little boy. That might have got you some attention from the flight crew. May not want the attention but while she was there give her the trash from the meal. This behavior explains why the flight was almost empty. I understand they are a new airline but they need to step up their game if they want to survive. Your are truly a brave man. Loved the video.

We now know where the worlds 737-500 go to die, along with any concept of customer service. Judging by the number of passengers on the flight, I susepct they won't be around for long. Thanks for suffering on our behalf, Noel.

Hei! Never tried Nam, but CITI and Garuda. Garuda is always super nice, at least to me. CITI was also good low cost option as Garuda is getting pretty pricey. I hope you get to see the other terminal next time. Terminal 3 is sooo much nicer than the others. Mostly used for Garuda and international flights
