I love how your family goes along with the extravagant dinners, etc. mine would ask “are you okay?” 😂

Unfortunately I was raised to behave this way because my family are very victorian in their actions and beliefs. So a lot of this actually I understood. When we would go to my grandmother's for Sunday Dinners (I am from the UK) it would always be served like this. The man would be the one to cut the meat and serve it and after dinner the women would go off into the living room while the men stayed in the dining room to drink whiskey and talk about business. The women would usually talk about fashion and babies and stuff like that. They would not read novels aloud though which kinda sucks as I might have liked that.

@@JixieDyeAuthor that is so interesting! My family would never do that though, the women have been active feminists for generations. I never knew people still raise their family like this. Did you enjoy some aspects of the lifestyle? And do you guys still follow those traditions? You don’t have to answer if you’re not comfortable, I am just curious about how different people live and are being brought up😊 Sorry if my english grammar is kinda off, it’s my second language and I don’t use it as much as I used to☺️

But easy/hard does not mean slow or fast. Emma is 100% right that we live in very fast times these days, thanks to the internet. The sheer amount of available information, goods and places to order goods from is far too overwhelming for a single person. Studies show that life also continously gets faster but I can't imagine how we could possibly handle more speed. Luckily, more and more movements also try to do the exact opposite which hopefully changes or delays that unfortunate development. We need to start inventing things that help us filtering information and don't give us access to even more information and goods. Don't get me wrong: there are countries that need to be more informed about the world (a good example is the US). But things like new smartphones, appliances, cars etc. should not be released that frequently. It's not sustainable and one doesn't even know anymore where to turn to to get the latest gadgets. 👍🏻

Also your mum is my icon, I'm not sure I wanna be a mum but I know I wanna be this kind of mum if I ever am. Being French I never gave much thought about the idiom "à la bonne franquette" and never thought it could exist in English but the fact that thanks to you I now know it does and is "à la francious" was the highlight of my day! Thank you for putting such efforts on your video while still always making it clear that the victorian times, despite being very much interesting, were not times that we should we wish to go back to.

Dear Ruby, I thought it might interest you that reading out loud after dinner is still done in some countries and families. I'm not sure in what countries and if it's a national thing, but I'm German and this tradition has been carried in my family from the 19th century into the current day, and I plan to keep it alive and carry it forward myself. Several of our family friends have that tradition as well, independently from us. Usually everyone stays seated around the table, including the person reading, or you move from the table to the living room to get more comfortable, and you can take a few snacks like grapes or whatever small lovely things may have been part of the dinner plus your wine glasses with you. This can be very much a daily thing, and sometimes you can read out loud more of the same story in the evening before bed. Those candle-lit evenings turn the everyday mundane into special moments to remember. (Also, having all food already on the table is still a tradition.) It is very social and extremely bonding and fun. I hope people start to rediscover this beautiful tradition, there's really nothing quite like it..! Thank you for this beautiful video.💖

My father's family kept this tradition in the US, too. My great-grandfather would sit in the middle of the living room and read. My father would read to whoever was washing the dishes before we all moved into the living room.

Rag curls work much better when the end of the rag is clipped or bobby-pinned to the top of the head near the middle parting. Then wrap the hair around the rag starting near the top until all of the hair is spiralled around the rag. Then the hard part: start wrapping the rag, starting where the hair was most recently wrapped around the rag, around the hair, working your way upward so that when the hair is now completely encased within the rag. Unfasten the clipped/pinned end of the rag and tie the two ends of the rag together. This process works better when done by another person than by oneself, especially with long hair like yours. My mother used to set my hair and my sister's hair in rag curls from time to time, and they came out so lovely and are quite comfortable to sleep with. :)
