@makaelaischillin3 жыл бұрын
1. They washed their hair frequently, although cuts were generally not done for women and knee length hair takes a while(I should know, I wash 1 in every three days and sacrifice 2 hours that day to get it ready and washed not to mention the 10 hours it takes to dry) 2. They did not wash their outer garments yes, but their chemises kept the sweat from them 3. They did have toilet paper by this time, and they also used newspapers, where do you get corncob? 4. By this point the dangers of lead were known, are you thinking of the Elizabethan Era? 5. Okay now I’ve never heard this one, they used things like orange blossoms and rose water for perfumes, it was quite the business 6. I don’t know the most common treatment for hysteria in women although doctors thought it laid in the womb and overies.

I find that the elders I work for have routines. Mornings especially. Washes, facial care/makeup the way they make their hair, the way they dress, the usual breakfast with tea, then the paper. Only one elderly lady I've worked with had a variety of food for breakfast. The others usually have cold cereal made a certain way, maybe with a banana or preserves, maybe not. The way they dress seems to be from when England didn't have super warm houses as well? Often 3 layers of clothing, sometimes four. An undershirt, then the shirt, those sleeveless sweaters/vests, and then a sweater/jumper. Then it's off to select earrings and scarves for the women. Makes me happy though because I know they're warm when I leave!

Really enjoyed this! I also loved your little clarification at the end because I’ve noticed that people tend to forget the bad parts of the past and only seem to be idolising the richer lifestyles which of course only few people actually had! Fantastic video! :)

Just an advice: when you comb your hair grab your hair from the half so you wouldn't pull your hair out of the roots... be careful

After being born in the 90's and growing up in the early 2000's with two parents that smoked indoors all the time....I'm telling you right now those doctors were right in saying it's madness to sleep with your windows shut lol! Not to mention the wallpaper dyes they'd use...everything leaching in air with the humidity....man it must have been MUSTY back then lol! I miss having fun with my Mum she's not as well anymore.... Your Mum is a very kind lady to do this all with you! Cherish her and involve her as long as you can!

This was so lovely and informative. It is a real treasure for those of us who really adore the era. It’s like watching it come to life in a very relatable way. And the details that you showed us are very hard to grasp from just reading about them. It was so wonderful. My special compliments to your mum. She was such a good sport and so involved. That made it all the more special. Thank you! And I’d LOVE to see an evening routine of a Victorian lady if you put it out!! All the best for everything!

when i learnt that in those times, showers or baths were very unusual, i couldn't help but think abt how their dresses were so thick and the s w e a t and now i cant stop imagining how stinky they all were under all those clothes

That’s why there were so many under layers, to absorb the sweat and protect the outer garments

Yep. Thats why when the british and other europeans like the Spanish colonized the Americas, the natives had to teach them how to bathe properly. The natives carried incense everywhere the colonizers went, and they thought that it was out of respect but it was because of the stench🤢

@@honeybrown6953 I'm not entirely sure where this started but they couldn't easily shower so they had towel baths "showers 1x a day or every other day with routine baths when they could in victorian england but as you could imagine it's hard to come by large tubs and clean water. Showering, bathing, using soap and wash cloths, etc. would not be new to Europeans in the Americas at the time.

This was quite interesting to watch, well done on another excellent video Ruby :) However I'd also advise people to actually do research on the Victorian Era. As Ruby stated in her video this is a upper class womens morning routine. The Victorian Era tends to be quite glamourised, but there are also plenty of documentaries showing the horrific conditions inside workhouses that men, women and children were forced into if they were poor. The working class also lived quite hard lives, so for those who want the Victorian Era, it really was only nice if you were wealthy.

What a fun retrospective. I love that your mother played along and was your ladies maid for the morning. Well done! And the tea service to gently wake you in bed up makes me think about the tea tray scenes of Downton Abbey’s first episode. The little silver teapot was beautiful. The waiting to get dressed. There’s a hilarious scene of this at the start of the Secret Garden (the 1993 editions with Kate Maberly) where she’s standing there with her arms out. Ruth Goodman note is a great extra bonus in this. I’ve just discovered here and she knows so many details. Her documentaries are so interesting.

I absolutely loved your video! I am an American in my U.K., and I have absolutely loved learning more about the Victorian Era, as well as other time periods in your history! Some of the Victorian facts in your video (especially about the routine...I love washing my hair and having my shower every day, for one!) surprised me, and the Victorian routine and the prayers with the hot chocolate at breakfast made me smile! I also love the Victorian author, Thomas Hardy. I have recently subscribed to your channel, too! Please keep on being a kind and beautiful person, as you seem, to be, and stay true to yourself! Take good care in these testing times! :)
