I Forced This Penguin To Hit Speeds No Creature Ever Should

This penguin didn't have a choice. I made him make the jump again and again in whatever way I wanted just so I could make a healthy profit. I quickly learned that if I wanna get some speed I need to crash him directly into the water at full speed. I also managed to fly him decently well at one point.

What DF has accidentally discovered is an unusual property of flight, efficiency of energy retention. Planes have an ideal angle of climb where they expend the least effort for an set rate of climb. This is known as the climb angle. There is an ideal speed and climb angle for every aircraft unique to it due to its own design. When he falls back down and flies back up he’s not actually really saving energy, he’s expending on the climb, and regaining on the fall. The closer his angle is to the perfect climb however, the less energy he will expand going up, leading to an overall longer flight.
