@ ;) Education is great but consumerism isn't. Every time I open KZbin I'm tempted to buy a new product. I already spent 200€ in the last four months. (I have acne and many products were too irritating). I'm also a like many young people on a budget. I am determined to stop my forming addiction but unfortunately I see many young women addicted to skincare literally spending thousands of dollars each year. The aim of skin care should be healthy skin and not dolphin or glass skin. Just my opinion

For those who are alarmed about the titanium dioxide. It's considered inert and safe. However, if you inhale it, the body will treat it as a foreign body and can cause irritation swelling bronchial inflammation. Something hasn't have to be toxic for it to be dangerous flour dust can cause similar reactions and is responsible for a condition called Baker's lung.

Some raw ingredients in cosmetics are unhealthy to inhale, such as sodium hydroxide (for natural soap), and SLS/SCI (liquid soap BBW, body shop, etc). We use them every day. Titanium dioxide is everywhere too like foundation, scrubs, toothpaste, mask, body/face scrub, and even for the industry like ink/paint/ceramics! It is to make the liquid bright/ white, but in this video, titanium dioxide works as a sunscreen too. We can't live without it. I'm eco friendly body care business owner, titanium dioxide considered as natural ingredients.

I don’t have sensitive eyes, but most sunscreens make me cry and burn my eyes so so much! One thing I’ve notice (and that my dermatologist pointed out) is that most of the sunscreens that do it have Avobenzone in them. And it’s an ingredient that can cause irritation to more sensitive eyes. Maybe you could try to avoid products with this ingredient and see if you feel a change for the better.

Hey I have a question why don't we use the uv filters directly as a serum why add all other ingredients. Also if the oils are already present in sunscreen why use Moisturizer?
Жыл бұрын
With the first part, you can only use the uv filters at certain percentages. Different filters are approved to be used at certain concentrations for safety, as with all cosmetic ingredients. The other ingredients affect the sensory and user experience of a product. The finish, the skin feel, the other benefits of the product. Also, a majority of UV filters aren’t in forms that can easily be applied on the skin. Avobenzone and a lot of other filters are powders, so they need to be solubilized in an appropriate medium to be functional on the skin. For the second question, they can be! Sunscreens are basically moisturizers with UV filters added to them. So if you find the texture appropriate for your skin type, you can definitely use it in place of a moisturizer. I have oily skin so this is what I normally do

Isn't octocrylene banned by now? It gets converted to stuff that is proven to be carcinogenic after a year, right?
@raerohan4241
@raerohan4241 Жыл бұрын
No, it is not banned. And it isn't properly proven that octocrylene is converted to stuff that is carcinogenic after a year. I assume you are referring to benzophenone, by the way? As reported in the study by Downs et al _Benzophenone Accumulates over Time from the Degradation of Octocrylene in Commercial Sunscreen Products_ , published in the journal Chemical Research of Toxicology in 2021? If so, there were some issues with that paper. 1) Sample size - they did test a okay amount of octocrylene-containing sunscreens, but they only tested one that didn't contain it. This means that they didn't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that it wasn't something else besides octocrylene that was producing the benzophonene. 2) Literature - it has been demonstrated that benzophenone is carcinogenic in pigs and mice _after it is ingested or injected_ . Downs et al did reference a study while saying that "up to 70% of the benzophenone in the products may be absorbed by the skin", but after looking at their reference, absorption only reached 70% after the researchers occluded the skin where it was applied by _gluing a piece of glass onto it_ . On regular, unoccluded skin, only about 50% was absorbed. Additionally, even if it is absorbed, whether it is carcinogenic when absorbed through skin is not established. In the same study where it was found that it could be absorbed through skin, it was also demonstrated that almost 100% of it was cleared from the body through urination after 24 hours. 3) Conflict of interest - almost all the researchers are in some way associated with the Laboratoire de Biodiversité et Biotechnologies Microbiennes (Laboratory of Biodiversity and Microbial Biotechnology) at Sorbonne Université. There is a project at the Laboratoire de Biodiversité et Biotechnologies Microbiennes which is funded by the Pierre Fabre Skin Protect Ocean Respect program. In addition to this, the lead researcher (C. A. Downs) is also associated with the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory. This laboratory received funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Interior for this study. While the researchers have stated that this study was not funded by these, we can see how the authors may have an interest in keeping their labs' sponsors happy. And considering that octocrylene is demonstrated to be harmful to ocean life, we can see how the authors may have a personal as well as financial interest in establishing it to be harmful to health. Additionally, speaking of the Pierre Fabre Skin Protect Ocean Respect program - Pierre Fabre Pharmaceuticals is the parent company for Eau Thermale Avène (aka Avène). If you look into the program, you can easily see that it heavily markets Avène's sun care range, which is octocrylene-free. With this, you can see how this brand _also_ has an interest in making sure consumers lose interest in products containing octocrylene, so that their own brand's products gain a larger market share. In summary - It has not been demonstrated that it is in fact octocrylene that is producing the benzophonene. It has not been demonstrated that benzophenone is absorbed in harmful quantities when applied to skin. It has not been demonstrated that benzophenone whether is harmful at all when absorbed through skin. And finally, the authors and the people funding them have personal and/or financial interest in establishing octocrylene as a dangerous ingredient. The only thing that has been established is that it's a good idea to not use expired sunscreen.

1. He’s making it for himself 2. Nothing he's handling is toxic for him to need to wear gloves 😂 Plus he's not in a lab working on products for other people. All companies have test labs where they make samples of new products and experiment with different formulations, and in these labs they don't require things like gloves, hair nets, masks, etc. Because they don't produce products for the public, they're only for private and personal use.

It's only dangerous to work with because it's a very fine powder. It's fine in liquid/cream form. Powders containing it are also fine, because the binding agents that they use to form it clump the particles together into larger bits, making it safe if you accidentally inhale some.
