Don't mind me... I'm just grabbing screenshots of my favorite pretties and heading over to Bianca so she can teach me how to draft them myself. 😅 I'm a bust 48 on a good day... self-drafting from pretty ideas FTW!!

Water. Definitely water. Do you have *magical* "don't let your distracted brain allow you to end up dehydrated" powers from living in Florida or something? Cuz I have super powers for forgetting to drink ANY water for like 6 hours, then getting a whole 2 sips into me, before getting distracted by something else. Which then required gameifying rehydration. Because neurospicy brain likes games!

These boxes are so much fun!!! I’m a plus size as well, but I just get the patterns I like and then re-draft them into my size. I know some sewists don’t like to re-draft - it does feel like Intellectual PropertyTheft, after all - but it’s not MY fault I’ll never find my size on a vintage pattern! I particularly love these housecoats!

Tbh, I think it’s absolutely fair to do that, with the bonus that you tend to leave the original intact. I have to alter just about every pattern because of my wonky body, from mild scoli and kyphosis, to lower bust apex and unfeasibly large airbags, plus a sway back, larger waist to hip ratio (tho less so now I am a lot bigger, but I have to adjust for my pochette and long legs/crotch. I hack just about every pattern I make, though I find I have to do limited alterations on colonial era clothing patterns, except the back waist. But you can’t wander around like it’s 1775 all the time unfo.

@@cassmacdonald-perfectlyimp2486 - Oh, you you CAN prance around like it’s 1775 all the time! I LOVE wearing my historical reenactment clothes and going to the park or the zoo! It does my fragile ego good when people want to take pics with me!

This is a long rambly comment, but I’ve just watched all 4 years of your videos over the last 11 days of being sick with a virus, and thank you for helping me get through it! You and your channel are both amazing and so inspiring for a novice sewist! (I may have also had a fever dream somewhere in the middle of it all about trying to sew a vintage pattern for myself. I don’t think they even make modern patterns in my size of 52-47-60 at 5’0” LOL)

I learned to do the Nancy Zieman method for selecting a pattern size. Based first on shoulder to shoulder (inside fold where arm meets the body across high chest to the other fold where the arm meets the body). So a measurement of 12.5", which is my measurement = a size 8 in one of the big 3 pattern companies. This measurement doesn't change, even if one gains or loses weight, and selecting a pattern based on this measurement fits the shoulders & neck. Then one makes changes to the pattern as needed to fit bust, waist and hip measurements, using the pivot & slide method. I wonder how the sizing goes in these vintage patterns, and if a size 8 would still be valid? My bust is 36", waist is 29.5" and hips are 34.5", so that would of course require increasing the pattern in those areas.
@lynnettevelez676

I'd wager it would be the same idea, but the size label may be different. I usually recommend using the high bust measurement (what/where you described except all the way around).

My grandmother also taught me pattern drafting - even from photos in fashion magazines from the 1960’s! She used to say there’s no need to pay for a pattern for something if there’s a photo of it somewhere- just study it and give it a shot! ‘Intellectual Property Theft’ apparently wasn’t a ‘thing’ in the 60’s….

@@flyingpigfarm1 fun fact, sewing patterns are thought copyrightable. Anyone can redistribute sewing patterns to their heart contend. You will run into the issue if you share the envelope, the artwork on the envelope, and the instructions. Those are all protectable in the court of law in the US. The pattern itself is free game.

@@doglover1neoAlso allegedly the reason for the lengthy stories in front of recipes about the family dog's opinion on the weather the day the recipe was conceived of... or something. The recipe belongs to everyone, but the story is intellectual property. Whether it's true may not even matter at this point, because every blogger "knows" they my must submit a mini essay pulled from the bank of highly predictable stories involving a description of diy home repairs, the seasonality of the weather, or small child anecdote, before ever deigning to let us see if this recipe also contains the ingredient we don't have on hand. (Despite the search string we used, asking for results without it).

So a fun little history fact is that after WWII some of the big “stars” of the day were the soldiers returning home, especially pilots. The first Ray-Ban aviators were created for our pilots flying in the European front, the shape is designed to fit around their oxygen masks. When they returned home everyone started wanting to wear sunglasses which is why they were probably starting to be drawn on the line art of some of these patterns. Can’t wait to see the meme you create with that one drawing though, it’s pretty funny just by itself. Only getting around to watching this today due to work and out shopping at peddlers malls, sometimes I get good scores there! Lots of lovely vintage linen tablecloths and occasionally vintage patterns too! Maybe I’ll get lucky and add some new ones to my collection if anything I like from this box in still in stock, knowing my luck though probably not. I’ll grab screenshots to add to my list of ones to look out for on my thrifting journeys.

Someone please enlighten me... I'm from Germany, so I am living in a totally different sizing system. Aren't these sizes veeeery small? Wouldn't a 30 or 32 bust be like an xxs and a 34 to 36 an xs/s and 38 would be an s/m size? Or am I totally wrong about that because it's bust size and not hip size? 😅 The confusion is confused. 😅😅 I'd really like a chart on screen : Size 12 bust 30 = an s to m ?? 😅😅
@StephanieCanada
@StephanieCanada 2 ай бұрын
Hi there! Yes, a bust 30-32 would be (on average) an XS. However, the bust 38-40 would be about an XL or 12-14. But, since we are dealing with sewing patterns I will never estimate to modern size charts as there is no “official” size guide. Every single brand does their own thing. I prefer to deal in the facts, and bust sizes are facts, or basically numbers, that can’t be changed or adjusted on a whim. This way I am providing the most concrete information possible.
@AniRSm
@AniRSm 2 ай бұрын
@@StephanieCanada Thanks! That is actually very clever to tell the sizing like that. ☺️🤝🏻 Thank you for the explanation. I'm kinda sad that patterns aren't more size inclusive. There must have always been big girls, I can't believe there hasn't. So it would only make sense to sell them for bigger busts, too. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤔
