Yew and hedge (Osage orange) are the two most prized woods for traditional bow builders. It's hard to find pieces that are long, straight, and knot free enough to make a bow out of, but if you do, it makes a fantastic bow. Traditional bowyers will pay anywhere from $50-$200 for a stave. Depends on the quality.

Those are osage orange trees (not invasive most places, but naturalized throughout North America) and they’re part of a colloquial group of trees known as “ironwoods” (not affiliated with the ironwood species) because they’re so dense that they burn out chains and saw blades. They were used for thousands of years by Native Americans to build their bows which is why they were cultivated and spread outside of their natural range within the Red River basin

Ps. Flair, I LOVE your work both on the farm and on KZbin and if you ever need a staff biologist (plants, fish, and conservation), I got you

The hedge trees are definitely a pain in the ass to cut down for sure!! They are thorny and will definitely wear a chain saw chain out pretty quickly!! I cut on a farm for a farmer that gave me permission and could have what ever I cut down!! I didn’t have any heavy equipment but definitely having some heavy equipment will help you guys out!! I absolutely love the way a new fence looks with fresh hedge post!!! Definitely awesome for sure!!! Someone asked on trapper J channel and I told them that they are definitely the best wood that will definitely last at least a hundred years minimum!!! But you definitely want to get the fence staples in the post as soon as possible after cutting them down because the longer you weight the harder they get and is almost impossible to get a fence staples into!!! Line post can be as small as 2” in diameter up to 8” and corner posts are 10” and bigger!! That is the way I did them and 20 years ago I sold corner post for 25.00$ to 30.00$ and line posts for 20.00$ and they don’t have to be completely straight!!! It was definitely hard work but definitely good money for me!!

Hedgeapple, also known as Osage Orange, is also prized for wooden bows. Straight 6ft lengths will go for a pretty penny to be split into bow staves. The wood also makes great handles for striking tools like axes, mauls, hammers, etc.
@Eraserhead12 жыл бұрын
From experience selling and installing fence equipment and supplies your typical line post are 3"-5" and corner posts are 6"-8" usually 8'-10' long for both and they go in the ground 3'6" that way your 6" below the typical frost line and you don't get frost heave. Locust post are really good money makers too if you have any locust trees. For most that I'd sell or install was pressure treated southern yellow pine.

Be pretty cool if you had a wood mizer sawmill at your ranch. Outside of fence post, you could saw your own lumber. Here in south Louisiana, milling pecky cypress is big business and people mill their own pine lumber down here. Add that to your investment of larger machines and you’d be set! Selling fence post and dimensional lumber would do well in my opinion. Good luck 👍🏻

Before some of you get upset, he said that they were invasive so they are doing more harm to the environment than good. By cutting these down it opens up so many more opportunities for trees that you want
@billybishop86352 жыл бұрын
If they are invasive, reselling them as tree posts without properly treating or aging them is WORSE than leaving them. Flair is begging for a visit from a few ABC agencies.
@jb14462 жыл бұрын
@@billybishop8635 how exactly would they be worse. The trees are already dead so it isn't like they can grow more. Also it isn't like they can do much harm sitting as a fence post

@@billybishop8635 not invasive
@billybishop86352 жыл бұрын
@@jb1446 Aside from the potential diseases and seeds which could be spread with the lumber, those trees could be loaded with invasive bugs. Same reason you shouldn't pack in fire wood to a camp site from a different ecosystem. Every piece of lumber you buy from a hardware store has been treated and aged, that's just the economics of the lumber industry. More importantly, as noted by some locals, those are not even invasive, Flair is simply Clear Cutting a former game reserve. KZbinrs get reported for way less than this, I just hope he had his permits in place before posting this logging operation online for the feds to see; 1 negative neighbour is all it takes.
