I have found SO many vintage patterns with missing pieces. So finding a bag labeled "odd pieces" in the ballgown drawer got me VERY excited! Come with me and see if we can put some vintage sewing patterns back together again.

Vendetta against belts: my mother was a tailor and each time she worked with new patterns, she checked them out, only kept the interesting parts. I remember her saying "belt. They think I am dumb?" She took it as a personal insult 😂

I never made the belts as I have no waist. I used that extra paper to make adjustments to the rest of the pattern.

And that is why, even though I always trace my patterns; I put the pattern number, size, measurements and date on each piece along with its name and piece.

I recently had a staple situation, NOT pattern related. Not finding my remover gadget, I used the point of a metal nailfile to pry up crimped parts. Worked well.

You are the reason I am cataloging all my patterns. It may not be a vast collection--though it will continue to grow--but, I'll know what I've got & where it is. So, if I come across a piece I missed putting away... I am also gleaning ideas from you and other sewing bloggers (you would probably know many of them) to use with the patterns I have. My "inspirations" file includes images, pattern numbers, and a brief description of what I want to achieve and/or what I need to do.

We were taught not to use the pattern to make a self covered belt. We were advised to buy and use a belt to match our handbag and shoes. When using a pattern that belonged to the person she was sewing for, pattern pieces may have been left out when the scraps, pattern envelope, thread and finished garment(s) were picked up. After finding the pattern pieces, she may not have remembered who the pieces belonged to (saved them and waited for someone to ask for them). The owners may never have hired someone to use those patterns again. The pattern envelope(s) may have been put in the trash (with the scraps) after it was decided that they were not needed.

THERE’S A VINTAGE PATTERN WIKI?! I mean, I’m as big as you, so most patterns won’t fit me unless there’s limited sizing up to don(and I already have to do FBA top and FBA bottom, short body, scoliosis and sway back, plus a host of disabilities) but would I sit for hours and drool through it? Yes, yes I would

Stephani, thanks for the laugh! I have a bag of odd pockets I make my own patterns and so I just keep various pockets in a bag when I need a pocket. I also have odd pieces I forgot to label and so I have them in a bag so when I open a pattern, if something is missing, I look in my missing pattern piece bag.I was always in trouble when I was a kid for mistreating my patterns. My mother would always admonish me and tell me that was money and money wasted if I didn’t care for the patterns thank you for the fun.

OMG Stephanie I get this frustration so much. Over the last 8 years I cant begin to tell anyone how many incomplete patterns I have found during my years of selling patterns. I have been on occasion been able to reunite patterns in joblots but its rare. The box of incompletes continues to get bigger. You just dont feel right parting with them. Congrats on finding one of the hundreds that you have.

A few years ago I matched up a bunch of my mom's stray pattern pieces to their envelopes. I still have a bunch of strays in a shoe box. They could belong to a ufo, or could have been separated during her sewing classes in her school years. I'll get back to trying to match things when I can.

My mother brought over all of her patterns that had been opened and nibble by her lambs ( because she kept the patterns in a bin in the garage, and the lambs got in the garage. I, too, now have a stash of patter pieces with no hone. Not my favorite activity.

I often trace and adjust my pattern pieces to fit my 'not standard' shape. I learned the gard way to ALWAYS label carefully what exactly that weird shaped piece of baking paper is supposed to be 😂😂 I have literally *just* finished a Regency Gent's Great Coat for my hubby to wear to an event tomorrow! Sewing in chaos? That's me! 😅

Try the point of a metal nail file to lift staples. You have a waist so you dont need to know this but maybe your followers might find it interesting. I began the Fashion School in 1969. At that time there was a lot of discussion about the disappearing waist. Of course the disappearing waist seam and belt where to blame and the fact (supposedly) that Elizabeth Taylor always had an elastic around her waist to encourage and fat to settle elsewhere and Elisabeth's waist was 18ins. Many of the students wore just such a elastic, only needs to be a simple 1/in piece of elastic

Thanks for this video!! I hope that you find some more pieces to your puzzles soon! If she made clothes for lots of people I could see how some things got lost or mixed up. Maybe she made some things with bias tape neck and arms, and didn't use some of the patterns. Who knows! I have tried to keep all of my stuff together over the years. Patterns might have been throw away to some people. (I have some from my mom and Aunts that are really old and used a million times, so some people treated them right!) I love what you are doing and look forward to your videos!!

Do you do craft patterns too or just dress patterns? I have both and some are missing pieces. I would like to see if I can find a few of the craft pieces and get rid of the dress pieces. the dress pieces are antiques. 50's on up! Most are full patterns but have no outer sleeve.
