Hi Elliot. I live in Japan so I can illuminate a little on that name. The "-ten" just means shop, so I suspected Komatsu Awazuten simply referred to the location this unit belonged to. Sure enough, there is a McDonalds in the Awazu district of Komatsu City in Ishikawa Prefecture. I'd guess that is your device's original "home".

For videogame and console history preservation it's pretty cool that these things were not completely vanished from existence and ended up in the hands of people who not only will preserve them but also document them for everyone, but I think that flipping hamburgers and making fries on a little screen is the last thing you want to do in your free time after being doing exactly the same the entire day, it makes me wonder why McDonald's eventually dropped the idea.

WELL to be fair, the amount of times people will truly hate their job (me included!) and then go home and hop on a life sim game that is essentially either a second job or is a version of their real job and just have a blast. so while you’re absolutely correct, this might have been their train of thought when making it! and they probably SHOULD have made this eventually available for public purchase to help out once it seemed like things were going sideways, like just make it a special collaboration bundle where you get the ds and the game for a certain price (because it certainly seems like you can play other ds games on it!)

I worked in a McDonald's in New Mexico, USA in 2005, I was trained on a standard windows computer. The software was not similar to this in any way, I don't recall exactly what it was but I think it was a series of instructional live-action videos. I never saw or heard of these until a few years ago when I saw the video of the guy finding the codes.

For those collectors who do not read Japanese, there are unconfirmed reports that this hardware and training software was also used in Quebec, Canada. (Of course it would probably be in French, but that is easier to translate into English.) I have not personally seen any proof of this, so I do not know if it is true.

Quebecois living in urban areas will probably have some ability to communicate in English; those in smaller communities rather less so. Point-a-calle (sp?) is definitely not the same as Montreal... Some people will refuse to speak English purely for political reasons -- I once had a shopkeeper insist on speaking to me in French even though I was buying an English-language newspaper. I fully understood him (and I responded in French), but he was making a point.

I had to wait another year before finding the one I have today. Mine actually does have some pictures on it and two games but I can’t tell what they are because they’re in Japanese. The pictures aren’t of McDonalds though. They’re of a couple of kids and a few of some flowers.
