My most favorite Nintendo handhelds as a kid were the DSi XL in blue and the original 3DS in red. Would play so much Pokémon on these damn.. The GBA & DS Pokémon era was by far the best.

One feature I used all the time back in the day was the ability to upload pictures directly to Facebook from the DSi camera app. I never see anyone mention that feature, but as a kid too young to use Facebook in the early 2010s I was very happy with it and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I still have the album on my account from back then that it made with all the pictures I uploaded from the console itself.

My first was the DS Lite as well. I remember spending literal months trying to find the firmware for the flashcard I used to have with it a couple years ago, it was entirely worth it once I found it.

I still have mine, I asked for it back then for my 10th birthday or so, idk but it was the year it released. Honestly I was a bit dissapointed because I thought it was a new console, I already had the ds lite so It was a bit of a waste xd. Still it was super cool and as you said you could have a lot of fun only with the camera and and the audio recorder and specially the flipnote studio. A week or so ago I discovered the youtube channel of one of the animators I used to watch in the flipnote studio when I was a kid, it was really cool to hear what flipnote meant to him. I also have pictures with my friend from when we were in the school and we didn't have a single thing to worry about, and pictures of a trip with my father, I could say that the dsi was my first camera. I also have memories with the dsi that I will never forget :). Thanks for bringing them back.

I guarantee that the DSi (and maybe the 3DS) were a lot of people’s first cameras back when those consoles were new. Gen Alpha might have nicer looking iPhone photos of their childhood, but they’ll never know the experience of the DSi Camera app.

I had a white o3DS as a kid, but I was always jealous of my cousin's DSi. I always thought it was a cooler device than the 3DS, and it even had an alarm clock!

If you wanna play DS games online, you can either use a hotspot or pick up a old Apple airport and lower the security

Those work great, but if you’re picking up hardware you can grab a mini travel router and lower the security on that. Definitely easier to work with and smaller compared to an AirPort, and has some extra use as a travel router outside of DS gameplay. I picked up a router for about $50AUD from GLiNet and it’s an excellent product.
