Sounds great! I always dug the old Classic, Duce, and Mace Peavey amp models that also did this SS pre/Tube power thang. I wish manufacturers would take a retrospective look back at this type of "hybrid" design. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, my complements on a real classy use of the "Levee" preset in EZD2 my dude. I play EZD with E-drums, and I tend to steer clear of that preset, as I can't turn it off if I don't! LMAO! Great demo! Stay gold amigo! Cheers!

I’ve had an Artist 4203 combo since 1987. In May of this year I got a 1965A 4x10 cabinet to pair it with and it sounds amazing!
@soylentkris2 жыл бұрын
I have a 3203 and used it for years... one of my faves in the stable... if you have a tremendous volume drop when going to clean, something must be malfunctioning. I typically run mine with the master all the way up, and use the clean volume and boost volume to taste... I also only use the gain around 6, the amp becomes really bassy in the high gain register. I use the bass control pretty high because (like most Marshalls) it's a bright amp. Mid around 7, treble around 4. The 'tone' control on the dirt channel is usually around 8 depending on the guitar. Another thing to note, these amps were paired with Marshall 4x10 bottoms that absolutely KILL. I have the -slant and straight, loaded with the original Celestion G10 vintage speakers... The sound is very tight and focused... but also manageable volume wise for smaller rooms.

The matching cab for these is the 1965A/B which was a closed back unit with 4x10 inch speakers. Killer cab that came with G10L-30 celestions. It’s pretty similar to a 4x12 but is WAY more portable. I’m surprised they aren’t more popular than they are.

I bought mine in 1987 and I love it. It is light on the gain at louder volumes though, at a lower volume, it sounds fantastic with plenty of gain. Still have it and to really get the full enjoyment of the era - you need a 4x10 1965A cab to go with it. I think just gets loose a cruddy at 9-10. it is a $300-400 amp at best now compared to what's out there. I'm actually having my serviced for future sale as of a few days ago. Look for those a couple weeks on the common platforms. Glad you like yours Robert - mine served me well for 35 years - ugh I'm getting old

As Mr Baker knows, power-amp distortion sounds completely different than pedals & tube preamp. That is specifically why Marshall gave this amp TUBES back in the 80's. Then there is speaker distortion.... Thank you Mr Baker for the work you put into these presentations.

I have one of these with the matching 4×10 cabinet. Supposedly there is common mod you can do to this amp to improve the clean channel. But as someone already said in the comments "you don't really buy a Marshall for the cleans"....

I'm hoping Marshall will take a cue from Orange and release a quality solid state amp. I know I'm a little off topic here. But that Orange Super Crush is almost indistinguishable from the Rockerverb. I've been over tubes for a while now. It's odd to me that Marshall was making great sounding solid state amps like the Lead 12 in the eighties. And yet the MG series sound horrible. The solid state pre-amp on that Marshall sounds great!

@brandonhoffman92022 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert! Awesome to see you give this amp some attention. It's been my daily driver for a few years now (it's even the same JMP style box with green tolex). Regarding the clean channel, the amp really wasn't designed as a discrete 2-channel amp per se. It really should be thought of more as a single channel amp with a built-in boost (the "red" channel). So basically, set up the non-boost mode as you would any other single channel amp for the crunch you're looking for and set the boost for the extra "kick in the pants" you want for solos/leads. Rock on!

I remember Fender making a combo something like this amp back in the 90's. Solid state preamp with 6v6 power tubes. Now they have the Super Champ x2, digital modeling preamp into a tube power section, those are great amps. Funny thing is most hybrid amps like the Orange Micro Terror, Vox Valvetronics, Fender Roc Pro, or Marshall Valvestate/AVT and Mode Four, Hartke gt60, barely push enough voltage into their preamp's for their 1 tube to do anything at all.
@jasondorsey711010 ай бұрын
The champ 12 and champ 25 were hybrids, but they came along in the post-Rivera "red knob" era which is looked down upon for shoddy build quality, which if you ask me they haven't done much to fix
