Today we are fishing for springtime red ear and bluegills! This is a great time to find them stacked up in super skinny water. Follow along to see all of the action and how we cooked them up for dinner!

You set a great example for conservation by not keeping those pre-spawn females. Additionally, I am so impressed by your wildlife photography. You definitely have the knack for it and could no doubt have a long and prosperous career in that profession should you choose to do so.
@westonturner6680
@westonturner6680 Жыл бұрын
It is opposite with bluegills from a conservation standpoint you should be keeping the females if you want to keep good genetics inferior males do the breeding when too many male big males are harvested many studies have proven this something to look into

Bluegill and other panfish can't be over fished in the wild!!! In a pond yeah in a river system no way
@darrellbaker2895
@darrellbaker2895 Жыл бұрын
@@jeremylesso857 Studies conducted by Andrew Rypel, research biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, indicates that assertion is false. Rypel analyzed panfish size trends over the past 70 years and found, as creel limits were liberalized, the average size of each species decreased. This runs counterintuitive to the oft-held belief that panfish will overpopulate, stunting their growth. Nevertheless, Wisconsin reduced the creel limits for bluegill and, over a period of years, average bluegill size increased. According to Rypel: "Fishing pressure, particularly on spawning beds where bluegills are most vulnerable, can be intense. And that pressure may be decreasing the size of the fish." I thanked Cole for putting back the pre-spawn females so they would have the opportunity to lay their eggs. Bluegill fry are an important part of the food chain, constituting forage for many species such as bass, catfish, and other panfish. I also have a concern about harvesting too many spawning males (Cole was very selective and didn't over-harvest males). Once eggs are laid, females leave the males to guard the nest. What happens when the number of males is seriously depleted? For that reason, I leave all spawning species alone during their relatively brief periods of reproduction.

Nice catch Cole!! The red ears seem to spawn real shallow here too, the bluegills will be farther out. I’ve seen the gills spawn through September up north here and as deep as nine ten feet if the lake has a lot of boat traffic ( ski boats and PWC’s)

Hi Cole! Does the red ear taste different than a blue gill? Also, could you tell me how you know the difference between a male and female? Also, how do you know it's a hybrid? You can answer on the next video if ud like. I'd really like to see the difference if possible
@ironmonkey4o8
@ironmonkey4o8 Жыл бұрын
Unless your palate is ultra refine, you won't taste the difference. Especially if you use the same type of seasoning or recipe. I wouldn't say it's the same but it's very very similar. And just like most things in the animal kingdom, the males are usually more colorful (to attract a mating partner). Male bluegills will have vertical patterns (bars) across their body and will have a more rounder shape. Females will have duller colors and appear more stretched. The black plate on their gills will be larger on males. I don't catch many redears but I assume they have similar characteristics as the bluegill.
@bigrooster6893
@bigrooster6893 Жыл бұрын
I think a world record fish should only count if it’s caught in its native waters the redear caught in Lake Havasu shouldn’t count.

Cole, have you ever used the old fashion cane pole to fish with? That is the way I learned to fish and was what I used until I was about 14-15 for most of the bream and crappie fishing that we did. Then they came out with collapsible fiberglass poles that took the place of the cane poles. What are the bream limits now? The limit was 100 when I was a kid.

I was watching Richard Jean one day catching big red ears and he barley put the hook in the worm and then tossed the whole worm out and boom so I went out and got a few worms and went out to a little farm pond that we bass fish in. I stuck my hook in its mouth and then right back out like Richard did lol. My line took off across the water and I set the hook and I thought I just caught me a big ole bass but then remembered what I was fishing with. A little bitty crappie pole but when I got that thing in it was the biggest perch /red ear I ever caught. I couldn’t believe it because we never fish for anything but bass
