I found a cable car line in southwestern Kyoto, Japan called the Keihan Cable Car. From the city of Yawata below, it goes up Otokoyama, or "Man Mountain" (男山). The ride is only three minutes, but the cars are oddly luxurious. The service began in 1926, was suspended during World War II, and is now operating again. At the top of the mountain is a large shrine, Iwashimizu-Hachimangū (石清水八幡宮), as well as some peculiar monuments. For example - did you know that this mountain was vitally important to one of Thomas Edison's most important projects? I didn't, but I learned about it up there!
