*6:44 For all you youngsters watching... That’s a disconnected “Dumbwaiter”. It’s a small elevator for carrying things between floors, such as food and dishes. They were operated manually by a pulley system and ropes. I had one in my 1880’s Victorian House in Cape May, NJ.

@@jessiebrown6084 Yeah, it appears they left most the original walls up and just redesignated rooms once the two apartments were combined. These beautiful, historic old places are what I love most on this channel. And I enjoy that Cash seems to appreciate the character and charm as well. You're a classy guy, Cash. Those high ceilings--embossed tin? And the medallions...the inlaid floors...the trim with Victorian rosettes and exquisite moldings...the transoms, sunlit bay window and the dumbwaiter, all well more than a hundred years old. I'm in love. I'm a country away but I'd move to NYC for this.

When he looks at an apartment that used to be part of a house, I keep trying to imagine what it might have looked before, and if someone bought the whole thing what would it look like if it was renovated to be the same as it was when it was built. I'm just fascinated by old houses/mansions/castles that haven't been lived in for decades. It is especially cool if someone buys and renovates it into what it looked like before, or a modern approximation.

It's quirky. A true old railroad flat. Probably not great for roommate situations but if you're gonna pay that kind of money for a 1 bedroom or studio somewhere else this is a great deal. Still needs some fixing up but you can definitely see the charm. Even though the kitchen is basic it still gets the job done. & for those that are complaining about no in-unit laundry, this is a 2 family home & it's old so putting in extra water lines probably isn't feasible

It's a really cool apartment and has some really unique touches from yesteryear. You would think however, that the landlord would do a better paint job in there and perhaps get those floors buffed and polished as it would look awesome! The only other setback is no washer and dryer and unit or even in the building as far as I can see. And this may not be such a big deal to most, but I was not comfortable with the stove having so much space on either side of it for things to fall down and it just looked out of place. It had very nice light for a railroad apt and those ceilings were really cool.
@jeffgolden253

"no washer and dryer" - How far to the nearest laundromat? Will Jimmy help me carry my laundry back upstairs? (When it was a tenement railroad flat, mom did the laundry on a washboard with Fels Naptha soap in the laundry tub on the kitchen floor, then bathed the kids in it.) "stove having so much space on either side" - That's because that's where the old wood or coal-fired stove used to be when it was a tenement railroad flat. To prevent fire you couldn't let anything be too close to it. The brick wall behind was the chimney.

@@vincentgoupil180 That's true. A railroad flat was just a bunch of rooms in a row. You had to walk through one room to get to the next, like walking car to car on a train. Someone must have built that hallway in an earlier renovation.
@j.kristineemmons
@j.kristineemmons Жыл бұрын
Interesting "railroad flats have no hallway". Lotta old flats in my city don't, either, but they're not called railroad. If there is any hallway, it's if the bathroom comes before the kitchen in the back (often with a built-in China cabinet across from it)... probably not more than 10 feet. I'm definitely not tripping over the stove placement, either. There's a ton of "interesting" layouts in kitchens of old flats in my city - they're basically a minimally developed square room, with an awkward, full length window in the middle. You just gotta put sink, cabinets, appliances, and kitchen carts scattered in the room, where you can find a spot for them. Definitely developed for the late 19th century. Many usually still have a cover over where the old stovepipe used to attach to the wall.

I agree on the floors. The parquet inlay is gorgeous. It would be pretty easy I think to strip or buff the wear and scratches off the top layer of the floor. If it doesn't have a laundry room in the bdlg. that would be strange. but these days you can buy portable washers and dryers that you can hook up to your kitchen or bathroom faucet. And they're not that expensive.

Love these old places with actual kitchens. Steam heat so the landlord pays for heat; the only drawback is the tenant cannot control the temperature. Will also need air conditioner(s) for the hot months. I live in an old building that was converted years ago to break up flats into apartments. I have half of a railroad flat with an enclosed back porch that has washer and dryer hookups. I bought my own washer and dryer. Once you have in-unit laundry, it's hard to go back to using a laundromat.

This place is AWESOME!!! I love that the less fancy neighborhood still have some genuine places like this; not made completely unrecognizable from its original form. Kinda like a weird puzzle of rooms, though, since it appears to be two apartments combined. I bet the railroad apartments were beautiful - just not as functional of a floor plan, for modern times (this is still 10X better than those greedy Frankenchopped apartments that have a kitchen/livingroom combo, too small to function...this apartment just redesignated old rooms into different ones). This place is also patch-as-you-go, by the landlord, but still way better than those nasty redid Manhattan apartments. That front room bedroom with the bay window reminds me of my old apartment; there was a wall put up in mine between the front room with the bay window and middle room, and I just used the front room as s bedroom- a full sized bed fit perfectly in the bay window. 🙂

Now, for the apartment; $2900/month? I was sold on those wooden floors and all of the character from the entry way and throughout the apartment. Oh, man... just let me get my scraper and paint stripping materials and get to work! The full aesthetics of that space have yet to be fully realized! In fact, I'd have to redo the kitchen, bathroom, 2 ceilings, and that awful engineered-wood floor to bring the space into line with the character of the rest of the apartment. I'd also have to check the roofing and its status. You can see water damage traces. BUT I LIKE THIS!

That is a gigantic apartment by New York standards, and the price is very good for what you get. On a sunny day like the one shown that would be a fantastic place to wake up in.

Beautiful inlaid flooring. You should repair all the dings and polyurethane seal it.
