Several years ago I talked to a prospector that worked for the county of Los Angeles in California. On his lunch hour he would clean the crevasses in the concrete river bed. He said he averaged about an ounce per year.

Gotta say, I really enjoy your videos Chris! Just one thing though, here you mentioned Albury/Wodonga as a city, but not just a city , the largest rural city. Now I gotta correct you, your home is Two towns in different states and therefore cannot be classified as a city, secondly there is a place in North Queensland that is actually larger in area and population and IS Australia’s largest rural city , and it’s Townsville. Cairns is a close second . I understand your difficulties ( no way am I saying that I know what you are and have been through ) and admire your resolve , only please don’t give up doing all you have been with Vogus prospecting and spud engineering . You’re a teacher with talent and would be missed if you were to chuck in the towel on those . So many prospectors are out there with the family doing this great activity simply due to the coaching and tips you have shown us all. Cheers big ears , from this weeks windy city!

Hey Chris, loved it! I did a similar thing in Bendigo Creek, but at the tail end where the culvert turns back into creekbed, and got a similar result. Mind you, some of the muck you have to pan through is pretty nasty, so I wouldn't recommend anyone doing this without some good gloves & other protective clothing. But it does make want to try prospect the whole channel, by dressing up as a council worker & get down there with a pressure washer & a wet & dry vac, Just to see if I could get aways with it! 😅

As my car is 27 years old, I'm mostly stuck hitting the rivers that travel through the city in my area. Luckily, it's the Denver metro area and gold washed down from the mountains to the west, so i do find gold in the nasty city waterways. 😁

I live in glacial till country and there is gold but it is super fine and intermingled with the up to several hundred feet of sand the glaciers left in hills all over. When they built roads through the area, they created erosion problems where the roads climb those hills. To combat the erosion they placed concrete in the ditches on both sides of the roads. Now, these concrete ditches do a fantastic job of preventing the erosion in the ditch itself, but they don't do a great job of preventing sand from outside the concrete from getting into the water flow and that sand and gold goes for a wild ride down the concrete to the point where the concrete ends and the channel is spread out over a wider area which is filled with rock to break up the flow. When viewed from above it looks just like an alluvial fan. But gold being gold it drops out of the flow within inches of the end of the concrete before the big rocks start. The result is you can go to virtually any concrete ditch on any hill, take a shovel full of dirt from right at the end of the concrete and find gold by panning it out. It isn't easy because the black sand falls out at the same place and the gold is floury, but it is there all the same. It isn't enough to make any money but it is kind of cool. I will have to make a point to scratch out the expansion joints above the end as well to see if they are working as riffles as well.

Pans like that are so much more rewarding than ones where you know there should or has been gold before, going to a "new" or weird place to look and then actually finding it is sooo much fun.... to be honest not finding it is also fun but not quite as much .....

Definitive outside the box thinking, well done. It seems gold is everywhere in your area which give you a lot of possibilities. Are there any old river systems which do not have water in it anymore but had in the past? If so, try such a site, you can take water cans with you and a plastic container to save the water while panning. Anyway, nice to see your videos. Cool stuff.

Great vid Chris, unexpected and informative. I live in a gold area, after heavy rains. I do look in the plastic drain pipes that pass under the roads ( you know the ones that have riffles in them) I scoop them out and pan them. I usually find some in those concentrates. Its not in the city though. 1 of my sons lives in the middle of Maryborough , the main old working are in that area, now covered with bluestone and concrete, next time im over there. Im going to scratch out some cracks and have a crack, just for giggles. ❤ it 😊

Isn't there a China-mans Flat to the east of Beechworth too? Think we have one down here around Castlemaine somewhere? Just looking at a 1902 mines department map of the Chewton-Castlemaine gold field I inherited from my father but couldn't find any China-men. :) Wish my arm still worked as it used to. Did well crevicing the Lodden river in the last century.

In todays episode of “mining human feces, our host enters the absolute bowels of the earth scouring human remains,, fecal remains, to uncover how many people consume precious metals in their day-to-day lives. “Now when scouring the sewer for metals, you’ll notice that the larger pieces of poop that are heavier in your hand tend to carry more gold. And when you squeeze the poop in your hand the density of the human scat is indicative of the likelihood of large amount of precious metals being in the persons diet.

What an interesting theory, Chris! And it looks like your thoughts were correct that gold was caught in the man made culvert drainage system. Who would have ever thought? Unbelievable that you found some! However, you now have a problem. Next time you travel there, there may not even be cement left from all the prospectors seeing your video and busting up everything! 😂 Thank you for taking us along on your quest!
