I’ve never been to Pilgrim Haven although my sister goes there quite frequently. It’s only about 100 miles from my Indiana home. It looks like there’s plenty of rocks there. I guess I’ll have to check it out sometime. That’s cool that you decided to slice the lightning stone. I didn’t think that the white veins would penetrate that deeply into the rock. My wife is an avid beach glass hunter. Not only do you find glass but pieces of porcelain, China and pieces of old crocks. Thanks for taking us along !!!

I don't have much of an interest in beach glass, and it's weird how I rarely notice it. I guess I'm just not focused on it. My sister loves it and finds a lot whenever I'm out with her and I find none. I guess it's all about what you're looking for.

Ah…you are my people. Especially your “special guest” Lori - I too collect beach glass, get very excited when I find bits of pottery or china, marbles, etc…but I also collect rocks & fossils. I’m not sure where Pilgrim Cove is, but it reminds me of another beach we recently discovered that is just chock full of lightening stones. I’m just so thrilled to have found your channel. The beaches in SW Michigan are certainly not as rocky as Up North beaches but we do have some treasures if you know where to look. And go in off season - though there’s one city owned beach that is always good for glass & fossils (which always seem to be together, oddly). Anyway, just very happy to have found your wonderful channel!

Thank you so much! It is interesting watching you comb through beaches and tossing back rocks that don’t quite meet the mark. When I first started collecting the man-made (glass/pottery) I would take all that I came across. A few years ago I gathered all the pieces that need more time and slid them into Lake Michigan off a boat. It’s interesting to watch what you and others choose and what is rejected. I think we all have our preferences and standards. I know I need to get busy this winter with my tumbler - I am so grateful you’ve made a “how-to” video for beginners. My husband bought me a very nice tumbler a few years ago and I’ve yet to use it because I felt rather inept. Now I have your videos. Thank you.
@MichiganRocks3 жыл бұрын
@@tiffinyharrington9307 I'm sure you can get some great rocks out of your tumbler. It's really not hard, it just takes patience. Most people that I see having problems either lack patience or are doing something different than what I do. It's funny that people will tell me that they did everything just like I did, but don't have their rocks turn out. Then, when I start asking questions, it's clear that they cut corners or used different grits and polishes, or did something else completely different. The best way to learn is to just get started. You can always move your rocks back a step or two and try again. It would take a lot to really destroy them.

I'm glad you were able to get to the beach. I hate to suggest to people that any beach is wheelchair accessible because I don't know how much off roading the typical wheelchair can do. @@MichiganRocks You're right, my wheelchair really needs cement or very hard packed gravel. My family pushed me down to the end of the cement walkway and from there I could see the whole beach. It wasn't ideal, but was close enough. There is a website (I think it was Pure Michigan) that lists accessible beaches in Michigan. @@MichiganRocks Rob, I just finished a batch of Petoskey stones. Some turned out perfect and others not so perfect. I will run them through again. In your opinion, if I have an ultra vibe 18 which is the big one and I have to fill it halfway up with corn cob, how much polish would you say I should put in that size vibratory Tumblr? If I were to do harder rocks, and use ceramic media with the rocks it would be 4 ounces of the last two stages of grit. But with Petoskey stones, and the fact that I’m using corn cob, I’m not sure if that ratio would still stay the same? Do you have any thoughts on that? I did call the Rock Shed twice, they were very helpful with me purchasing my machines, but since then I have not been able to get a hold of them by phone. Thank you for showing us we can rock hound closer to home! Grabbed a beautiful Unikite chunk and slabbed it! I think it may have been in one of your previous Pilgrim beach videos. Had the same beach worn Epidote around the top. Can't wait to polish them! Couldn't find a single lightning stone though lol

I like chatting with people on the beach too. We talked with several people that day. There was a group of senior citizens picking up larger rocks for their condo yard.

They're basically cracked mud balls that had the cracks filled in with calcite. There's a short description here: swmichigan.org/blog/6303-rock-and-fossil-hunting-in-southwest-michigan

ROB, I was out on the beach in South West Michigan today and found some lightning stones and an Agate, They do exist on Lake Michigan if you look hard enough, it was about the size of a dime.😄
@MichiganRocks2 жыл бұрын
I used to think that agates couldn't be found in Lake Michigan, but I hear about them being found much more than I ever thought possible. Congratulations on a great find.

Watching this video back, it seems really clear that the hippie woman you met, talking about "Mermaid tears" is also the same one who left the rocks on the branch and in a spiral! They had to have been done recently to be on that branch, she's there all the time, etc. Just a fun note that I'm not sure you caught at the time!

Rob I have a Petoskey stone bead I purchased from Mary in Alpena. Long story short, I lost my bracelet a few days ago but lo and behold someone found it and turned it in to a business I had told about it’s loss. The stone is not damaged badly, but it is scratched. Any thoughts on what if anything can be done to restore it to its original beautiful condition? Lightning stones are very cool. Thanks for sharing.
@MichiganRocks3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for buying a bead, and I'm sorry it got damaged. Petoskey stone is really soft and therefore will be easy to get that scratch out without too much effort. The only problem might be putting a polish back on it. I have a video on how to hand polish Petoskey Stones. You'll need a multipack of automotive sandpaper that you can buy at an auto parts store. You could use the method shown in the video, but start with a higher number grit, like maybe 400 or so. If that won't take out the scratch, then move to a more coarse sand paper like 220. After you get to the highest grit you will need to polish it. I would suggest aluminum oxide polish, but you won't be able to buy that locally. I wonder if a jewelry store would quickly give it a polish with Zam for you? If you had already done the sanding, hitting with Zam takes about one minute, maybe less. A jewelry store would have that around for polishing metal and it works great on Peotskey stones. One more thing, I'd cover up the silver grommets with masking tape or something to avoid scratching them. Here's that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZusnoGorLdsd9U
