I do not think Matt made a mistake, he had to base his decision on the facts on hand back in Spain. Also, the horse may have not been up to the riding that Matt does, he may have been lame off and on. This lovely lady does not appear to be an intense rider so his leg will probably be fine with what she asks of him. And maybe he just needed a lot of time to grow without intense riding? So many factors involved in this type of situation. He has a wonderful home and that is all that matters now and will be a good riding horse for her. He is absolute gorgeous too.

I've said similar to others. Someone looking for a pleasure or hack doesn't need a vet check meant for a potential Olympic medal horse. It really helps to take a vet you have worked with, they know your riding ability, your ambitions, what you are capable of handling in terms of medical issues, etc.

I was so triggered when she’s like “where show me where?!?” And goes to the front leg right after the vet says “left hind”. Like you know you got caught in your lies lady. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m glad the vet was honest with Matt and advised him not to buy even though Matt already knew to not pursue. Especially a PRE from Spain is not cheap. 😳 that’s my dream horse so trust me I looked. But I’m in America. I’m sure transportation is cheaper if staying in Europe.

it's not much cheaper. We had to ship a friend's horse from Germany to the US and our PRE cost just a tiny bit more this March from Spain to Germany. But I think shipping prices also flactuate a lot, especially now....

Just have good connections really, you can get horse like that fine cheap, people do recommend buying them before they are backed if you don't want the cost to skyrocket though. I'm from Denmark, I've known quite a few who has gotten them imported, and I know for a fact none of them were rich 😊. But yeah travel overseas to the US is definitely expensive, the minute a plane is involved I'd say the prices go absurd. But again pricing also depends on what you're looking for in your new horses. I've had quite a lot of young P.R.E in my hands, they're quite easy to deal with, I was quite surprised with how easy and calm they were, not to mention intelligent. They're great horses. However, if you want rare colours like dun, buckskin, palomino, chestnut, perlino, cremello, pearl-gene (glossy coat) then they are twice the normal amount 🤷.

Matt, you did not fail, rather you succeeded in your purpose. You had to make a judgement call and you made it. Though your regret at not owning the horse might be quite real, your integrity at confronting the issue is admirable. The horse is well cared for and clearly much loved. None of us can predict the future and this story may not be over yet. You have apparently made a new friend in the horse's owner. I've a feeling only good things will come of that for the horse, for her and for you.

I think the gelding stopped a lot of the moving around. He looks calmer now that he's gelded. He's still a very handsome horse.

@@pr8872 I was talking about her getting bit. She's training him without using a separate target, and he's using his teeth quite a lot. The result is that she's basically putting her hand in to his mouth, and whether he means it harmlessly or not, eventually that's going to be a full on bite. Edit: This is specifically referring to target training for the "high five"

I think in the end it worked out, he is in a nice home, looks great and his owner seems to be a lovely lady! Jesse's "proud mama" comment is on point! Also Matt and Sureño are a great match, which wouldn't have happened if things went differently. There was a very warm and welcoming energy in this video and although Matt's heart bleeds (understandably) I think this is the best outcome for everyone. Maybe he was meant to fail the vet check because this new owner was meant to be his "once in a lifetime" human.

What a WONDERFUL woman!!! For those in North America-“gallop’ with the way she said it, actually means ‘canter’ in German. I taught a German rider here and she taught me some of the language, and when she said she galloped, I was saying we didn’t do that a lot here, but then found it meant ‘canter’. So, I am smiling that I remember that! :D While this is probably hard for Matt to see in one way, he must be thrilled in another to see that this horse has found such a loving owner! I just smiled watching her with him, and listening to her speak, she just has such love for him. That’s all you could ever want. Vet checks are so tricky, and ultimately, I think Matt’s vet did the right thing: The horse was lame during the check and the vet failed him based on that plus what he found. I’ve known horses that failed vet checks for jumping, but had brilliant dressage careers.

I think not buying him was the right decision at the time, he not only failed the x rays but the actual trot up and may not have been able to cope with the amount and intensity of work Matt would require from him. He seems to have an amazing home and easy life now, nothing too intense which is what very well may be keeping him sound as well as having time to mature. It all worked out great in the end

I completely disagree with the person commenting saying the vet was wrong and agree with you melli - I thought he was fantastic. You could clearly see the horse had spurs on the X-ray. If that was as a three year old that’s only going to get worse with age and certainly with the sort of work Matt would be wanting to do with him he would really need to take weight behind which this horse would struggle with. It seems like he’s at a lovely home now which really suits him which is fantastic and his mum clearly loves him. To me he still doesn’t look totally sound on a circle in trot but it seems like for the kind of work she’s wanting to do with him the horse is well suited. A vet can only go from what they can see of the horse on the day and advise the potential owner accordingly. As an unbacked three year old with little work and spurs like that already... I would have made the same decision as Matt and if I was buying a horse in Spain I would want that vet!

Matt- I have continually been impressed with your views and maturity regarding both the horses and your popularity. I know part of this was because you wanted to see him again but it seems another part was so that you could ease the way for this horse. There is responsibility there, as a public figure, to acknowledge the stigma you put on this horse by making his vet check public. I am not, in any way, criticizing you for that. I’m complimenting the fact that you realized that and wanted to do your part to erase the stigma and therefore helping this horse have the best life he can, freeing him from the label unconsciously placed

Several years ago, I managed a veterinary clinic in Texas that is the premier equine sport horse lameness clinic in North America. And I can tell you, we never passed or failed any horse on a prepurchase exam. We simply provided the prospective owner with any findings that were anything other than normal and allowed the prospective owner to make the pass or fail decision.

I had goosebumps almost all the time. I can see, that Mat is all the time a little bit sad as well, he still thinks of him as his dream horse. He has beautiful Emporio and Sureno, but this was the first one. But he has great home, no issues, he is happy and that is the most important thing. Yes I remember him but you didn't fail Matt you can only go on the info you are given at the time personally I couldn't see any anonymise on that xray speaking as a qualified vet nurse myself I am very happy though that he now has a wonderful forever home as I think he has been moved around due to your veterinary assessments at that time but you do have very beautiful horses yourself and now will be able to follow this boys career xx
