Every horse is born a basic color. The grey gene "overlays" that base coat as it is always dominant. A grey horse either carries GG or Gg. GG gets passed on 100% to the offspring while Gg only gets passed on 50%. Grey is responsible for the gradual and progressive depigmentation (fading) of the carrying horse. When both parents only carry Gg, it is 50% possible for 2 grey horses to have offspring in a base coat without the grey (gg). Often, you can see "grey goggles" on a foal when it is to turn grey, but that isnt always the case.

I have seen bays, and black turn to gray as they get older. All different types of grays, they will become. A gray horse is never gray when they are born, it can start to turn gray before they turn 2 years of age. The gray horse will always dominate. If one of the horses mating iis a gray, 99% of the time, the foal will be a gray horse
@deliahdeschain3024 жыл бұрын
A horse can have any color when it is born, be it the "basics" such as bay, sorrel/chestnut and black or even with a dilute suchs as cream (palomino, cremello, buckskin ect ect). Thats just an example, be it cream, pearl or anything else, it doesnt matter what color the horse has, if it has at least Gg (one copy of the grey), that will show in the physical characteristics (phenotype). As you say, grey is always dominant over other colors. I guess the degree in how much and how fast the horse greys out eventually is always individual. Some horses start later, some horses start as foals even before they are 6 months once they shed the foal coat. Often, foals show grey goggles around eyes and also around the muzzle if they carry the gene. However, it is possible to get a non-grey foal out of 2 greys when they both are Gg. If you wanna breed the grey color out of a breed, you have to breed with Gg horses as chances are 25% (thank you for correction to the others :) ) that the offspring will be without grey. The only time you will always get a grey, is to breed with 2 x GG (2 homozygote grey horses). Then the chances arent only 99%, but 100% even.

The first bay is my favorite. Very uphill with a deep chest and strong loins At such a young age. The chestnut will turn gray and it moves gracefully and has a gorgeous head! The last one, the little bay, appears to me to have been born early or was positioned differently and the birthing was more difficult. This one has more of a n elongated head instead of The gorgeous heads of the other two. BUT This one could also develop beautifully in its first year. I bought a Haflinger who was from The same dam and sire as the grand national stallion. Mine was ugly ugly ugly as a baby, even developed warts as a six-month-old, (he lost the warts as he matured and no one could tell he ever had them) and everybody thought I was crazy. Oh but when he turned one! He was the most gorgeous horse on my farm! I always called him my ugly duckling. Don’t be worried about people saying there are too many horses and you shouldn’t breed. Backyard breeders should not breed. Breeders who are committed to breeding the finest specimens of the breed are who should be breeding. I often have seen breeders expect money down on a foal before it is even conceived, So that they knew each foal would have a home waiting for it. I am so excited to see you branch out into this. From what I saw, and videos make it difficult to tell, conformation type shots with the foal and dam are best to judge this sort of thing: All three foals will grey, all three have grey rings around their eyes. The foals were probably all born the same color as their dam and each tends to resemble the dam. The first two mares are big bodied but well conformed with a lot of bone and substance and obviously passed that on, their movement was very good if not wildly spectacular but that is somewhat to be expected from broodmares that aren't in active training anymore. The last mare was smaller, lacking the size and depth of the first two mares and her gaits were flatter. It could be that she was older, but overall she didn't exude the same quality as the first two mares and her foal reflects that. It is smaller and thinner, lacking the bone of the first two foals. It may catch up to them, it may be smaller because it's dam is smaller/older, studies have shown that foals born to a draft mare versus a pony mare based on the same cross will yield foals born at a size comparable with their dam that will catch up to each other in growth during their time as sucklings/weanlings. As a whole, I believe Sureno added action and carriage to his foals, the chestnut may slightly resemble him, but that one frozen action shot makes me think it is a carbon copy of it's dam. I feel the darker bay is the best of the three, got a good shot of it's conformation and the movement was very nice. The chestnut is a very close second, no real conformation shot of it so that could change but action for days and all the flash. Have to take a wait and see approach with the last foal, as it puts on size and weight it may just be another carbon copy of it's dam or it could fill out like the other two, hard to tell without knowing the mare though it is a good horseman's trick when breeding a new stallion for the first time to cover several excellent mares and a couple poor quality mares to see if the stallion can improve them.

As some who also has a keen interest in breeding (have bred two of my own and worked several seasons at a standardbred racing stud. Not the same a dressage performance but those racing people know a lot about picking bloodlines/nicking!), my best advice would be to pick the best possible mares for your stallions' first crop. Their first crop is going to be what sells them to the mare owners. Performance records are excellent, but as a mare owner, I want to see the quality of a sire's progeny before he is put on my list. Look for proven broodmares who have already graded Elite within the studbook, so you know they produce quality themselves. If you want the foals registered with the warmblood books, you may need to send your boys through stallion approval. I think it can depend on each books individual rules, so worth checking out the ruling for whichever you want to go with. In terms of what to look for in a broodmare, a good SI gap is a non-negotiable point for me. If the SI is placed too far back, the athletic ability of the horse suffers and they can lack impulsion and often struggle to sit and push in the collected work. Neck set will be less important since PREs are already very upright. Shoulder angle, feet and nicely set hocks would be two others high on my list. Over at the knee is better than back at the knee, but straight is best. Leg flaws are often quite hard to correct and can take a few generations to breed out. Without knowing Emporio's exact breeding or having a proper conformation photo (I cannot remember if one has ever been posted anywhere), I would be looking at D line mares, so your Donnerhall and De Niro mares. They tend to be nice movers without loosing ridability. Quaterback mares would also be high on my list. He seems to consistently produce nice moving horses with plenty of strength. Anything Jazz I would tend to stay away from. They are talented talented talented, but HOT HOT HOT and can be very difficult to ride and managed. Not all of course, but that line is known to be on the trickier side. I would probably not look at R line mares either, just because they tend to be lacking in shoulder freedom. Known for their rideability, but not their movement. The PREs are a bit 'up-down' in their movement, which is excellent for the collected work and the R line horses tend to be a bit the same. I just don't think it would add anything to the PRExWB cross in terms of an upper level dressage horse. Both my boys are R-line on their damside, so I say that with all the love in the world lol. As a final closing word, get to know the breeders and competitive riders in your area. Learn what they are looking for and what lines they will follow- pay particular attention to the dam line (not damsire, dam's dam. Follow the female line). A good strong mare line is INVALUABLE.

For those looking at PRE pedigrees the colour translations are: tordo is grey (tordo is song thrush as in it’s dappled grey breast), castano is bay (confusing because the translation is chestnut, but this is accurate because edible chestnuts are brown with black points) and alazan is chestnut (or what the americans call sorrel, and alazan is spanish for sorrel. The inheritance of colour in PRE is quite complex and interesting, especially when the recessive pearl and cream genes become homozygous. Eg the crm gene in a chestnut coat gives a palomino, in a bay coat gives a dun (buckskin) and in a black coat gives a silver or blue dun.

Matt, if you want to breed foals for yourself to keep, you have to think about how many horses you can train, ride, pay attention to, etc. If I were you I might try one from Emporio, wait a year, one from Sureno, wait a year and see how having that many horses feels. Also contemplate having those horses for 20-30 years, and how old you will be when they are in their 'senior years'. Would you expect to keep the foals at home? Will you have room for them all? Lots to consider...I always loved the idea of breeding my Thoroughbred mare and having a foal to raise, but got talked out of it by people who pointed out how many "unwanted" foals are produced - and discarded - by the Premarin industry, do you know about that? here is a link to learn about it: www.peta.org/about-peta/faq/my-doctor-wants-me-to-take-premarin-but-i-understand-its-made-from-horse-urine-is-this-true/ I don't mean to discourage you from breeding your own foals but I would certainly do only a very small number....

Turned dark brown/black with a few white markings from a champion bay Connemarra stallion 13.2hh. She ended up with great bones, movement from the Trakehner side and 15hh, which I kept. The first foal is now the perfect image of his mom, 17 hh, white now and lovely bones and movement., and ended up with my coach. I have no regrets for my breeding ... both have had no issues health wise, and have given tremendous amount of joy from birth to training and then riding. Hi from New Hampshire USA, absolutely stunning little babies. You should always dream big, I used to raise and train Morgan horses in my prime, such a wonderful experience. Thank you and Jesse for sharing your life with us. God bless!

You just found a dad for the foal Jesse wants XD That third foal didn't look like he had a particularly good dam. The others are GORGEOUS. He'd make some quality babies, for sure. just be aware that after breeding they will have much more of a drive to mate again, so you'd have to put some extra training on them to teach them to continue to control themselves around mares. If you'd like to know how to do that, I'll see if I can dig up the video I remember from a fantastic trainer. Horses shouldn't be bred just because you have them and think the babies look pretty. If you choose to breed truly quality youngsters, however, that's somewhat different, and his babies would be. Just remember to be responsible about the little ones you bring into the world.

You didn't say what kind of company you started with Jesse, but, in my opinion, it should include producing horse movies!! You both have a great eye for catching the subleties of emotions in the shots of horses!!

You do have really beautiful stallions, and the foals that you saw were gorgeous. But please remember, its very easy to just sell frozen semen. It could be going to anyone, people buy horses without realising what kind of lifestyle comes with that. Especially foals and young horses, they are easy to ruin for people who don't know what they are doing. Then it will be called a "problem horse" and it will either be put down or possibly be sold on and on until it gets sold to a meat buyer... Hundreds of thousands of horses are sent to slaughter every year. I hope you stick to what you said and only breed what you can manage personally, don't be a part of a big problem. Never the less, I like your videos and I hope you are doing well in these difficult times.

Those foals are adorable and doubly so knowing they are Sureno’s foals 💖 They look like they will be tall like him. I really like Sureno, but I must admit I LOOOOOVE Emporio 💖💖💖 Emporio’s foals will be outstanding.

I can't help but cringe every time he talks about wanting to be an breeder, it's the reason I hate people buying stallions. As someone who works in an rescue and sees amazing horses in auctions it just hurts me. When the families and people who buy the horses as pets leave and we run out of funds the rest of the horses sell to kill buyers for extremely cheap. Being bought at auction doesn't always mean these horses will go to good people either. kzbin.info/www/bejne/anymh6Cqo7yifbM *you do whatever you want I guess* Pregnant mares, foals, horses that were used for competitions, there's every breed in auctions and every horses conditions very.

Not everyone breeds for money. Obviously you weren't getting the point of what he was saying either, it's obvious he hasn't bred before he is just dipping his toes there's nothing wrong with that, if a person wants to conserve the bloodline of their horse for future generations there is NOTHING wrong with that. Sure many many horses get sent to auctions I'm aware I live in Arizona and go to Nevada all the time where they do roundups (maybe a little more than they need to but that's a different topic). I'm sure Matt in the future when he seriously considers this will ensure the safety of the foals and what homes they go to so they don't just die that'd be terrible. And no offense but most adoptions from roundups make sure you can take care of a horse too.

I cannot wait for you to begin breeding! It's very exciting. I'm shopping for my own stallion prospect now & will appreciate watching your journey. I very much like Emporio and would love to see him crossed on one of Soreno's fillies for a purebred. Eventually, of course! I think either has wonderful potential crossed on a nice warmblood. Can't wait to see how it goes! Regarding grey, you can usually tell if a foal will grey out by their legs. Foals born with dark legs will grey, light silvery legs means it will typically keep the color. 👍

Horses with the gene for greying out are usually born with a coat that has not greyed out yet. So if they didn't have the gene for grey, they would most likely look like the way they were born throughout their whole life, though their first shed will probably change the shade of their coat. Some coat colors can also change shades with changing amounts of sunlight and with age. But since the foals in the video have two grey parents, they will almost certainly grey out with age but not necessarily at the same rate.

Consider a Lipizzaner mare for one of your stallions. Lipizzaner horses have spanish blood in their roots, so you can't go wrong. They have naturally rounded, thick necks, muscular body, and are very, very resistant breed with long life span. The only Lipizzaner stud farm in my country is located in my town, so I learned to ride there as a kid, and know these horses well. They are very agile, energetic, have amazing gaits, carry their tail high, and are very smooth to ride. They learn really quickly, as they are very eager to work. They are used as dressage and carriage horses, but are quite rare outside this region. So finding a good mare could be very difficult, as really good and elite representatives of the breed are hardly for sale anywhere, and are used for further reproduction of this breed, so they might not be available for cross breeding.

Yes the babies will absolutely turn colors... And the first one does have a head and carriage like his sires♥️. I really like the second foal!...shoot I love them all and can't wait to see when they shed out to see what color they are!! As far as not getting to breed for any foals for yourself, because of all this covid-19 mess, you ended up having a unique opportunity of taking an already breeding stallion and taking a year off to focus on him.. with him getting totally settled in, handling, training and riding... Now when he returns to breeding he's just going to be that much better.. you are doing an amazing job my friend! Congratulations Matt!!

OMG! Foals!😍❤️ nothing is better than foals. They are so cute and you really do see Sureno in them, and I guess we can say colour outcome in horses are still a GREY area for Matt😂😅❤️ Loved the video❤️
@ncoppens4 жыл бұрын
There are 2 base colors in horses. Black and red (sorrel). They get 1 of this gene pair from each parent. Black is dominant over red, so a black based horse can carry a red gene. A sorrel horse does not carry a black gene. First thing you can say is that Soreno carries a red gene for sure (not sure if you know his base color as a foal) and he carries at least 1 grey gene otherwise he would not be grey. If he was a sorrel as a foal he will only carry red. All other colors are a combination of these base colors plus one or more modifier genes that color that base color differently. Grey shows on all base colors and they only need one of those genes to become grey. Most foals show that they will turn grey, because they have faint greyish/lighter circles around the eyes. As far as I can see on these video's all foals look to be grey.
@jeanninegruber49604 жыл бұрын
Yes they will turn gray. Look at the white hairs above the eye lids that's the first signs of a gray. 🦄😍
@livtopia-xo2wv4 жыл бұрын
A way you can tell if a foal will 'turn grey' is that they are born with light grey rings around both eyes, if they dont have these rings then the foal will most likely stay the colour that they were born. From what I can see in the video, the bay foal (12:38) will definitely turn grey. hope this helps :)
