I advise anyone coming to Scotland between May and September to bring a midge net and plenty of Smidge . And that's not guaranteed to keep them at bay 🙈

Great video showing how a little tiny insect can ruin your camp ...for anyone coming to camp in Scotland in the summer please take this advice and buy a fine mesh midge net , smidge will help too and even these new thermacell devices are apparently good and only £30 ...treating your gear and tent with permetherin helps with midges and tics...flextail are making a tiny repel device worth trying...good luck 😅

Me dad was from Glasgow and when as kids my Dad and mum took us to Scotland for summer camping holidays Dad always referred to the midges as "wee beasties" tbf the torment that comes with em.. Wee beasties is a pretty accurate description. Still missing Dad😔. He was a great man. Ftt.😠

I feel your pain! I spent 2 weeks wild camping in the Highlands last month and hiked to the Lost Valley. Midge bites may not last as long as mosquito bites nor itch as much but that prickly sting as they bite is horrible. Not sure I'd go there in winter though as that walk would be treacherous in wet weather. I had enough fun on the way back down because I didn't quite fit through the gap in the rocks and I'm very short and found it difficult to reach footholds on the steep rocky bit near the top. Is a fun little hike though with a rewarding view - but need to go when there's a stiff breeze to keep those midges away.

Have you never heard of DEET? In the days of canvas tents we used to wait until they collected along the ridge inside then incinerated them with a candle. Not recommended with modern materials!

The Port stow near the But of lewis is the worst place iv camped for midgies and flying biting insects basically if it flies it eats you even big black flies and clegs. my old house the windows sometimes got black with the flying vampires and had to sit in sitting room at night without lights on and a small fire in the hearth to stop them coming down the chimney they must have being hungery :)

Thats what happens in Scottish summer. Noting you can do about it but cover up with nets a midge repellent. If you put your tent up at last light you will get attacked less and find a place with breeze, they dont like wind over 5-7mph.

This is why property is Scotland is so cheap. Would love to live there but not sure I could handle the midge for 6 months. Glorious spot that though Liam....I agree with your remark on the winter, I look forward to it every year unlike most. 🤣

Property in Scotland is certainly not cheap. It is compared with London but then so is everywhere else in the UK.

@@Delta-fs8jm Repeating what I said to you kind of proves my point 🤣 But ok let put in a way that you might be able to understand. If you bought for example, a large, say 5-6 room detached property with a few acres of land and a couple of outbuildings in Scotland it would be much cheaper than the same type of property in any other desirable part of the UK....ie the Lakes, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Cambridgeshire, Devon etc etc. I doubt i'll be able to post a link so I have copied part of an article from a well known property website....I REST MY CASE, READ IT AND WEEP 🤣 2. SCOTLAND IS CHEAPER TO LIVE IN THAN ENGLAND One of the delights that moving to Scotland will bring is a much cheaper standard of living. The living costs in most Scottish cities are around 10% cheaper than those in popular UK cities. In fact, living in Scotland is supposedly 30% cheaper than setting up shop in London! This saving is mainly due to the low housing costs. Even the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, offers some cheap, yet beautiful, places to live that definitely won’t break the bank.

I’ve only just noticed this since recording the video! Thats why I needed a belt, I told them i was a size 32 🤣 which according to the website has a 35 waist, no wonder I needed a belt 😅😅 Didn’t realise during the recording or the edit. Might update it and mention it in the description!

Omg that brought back nightmare memories of camping up Derry lodge in the Cairngorms.. Idyllic spot by the river I thought 😂When the black swarms started we escaped into the tent only to find them coming up through the floor which was so old it had disintegrating and we couldn’t even get out of our sleeping bags to cook 😆 next night we walked back and slept in the car… luxury

I know your pain .Had exactly that experience at that spot by the river at Derry Lodge. Near the footbridge? Had come over Ben MacDui from ski centre , doing a circuit through the Lairig Gruh back to Aviemore . Aye , its a beautiful place- but we got absolutely rinsed by the wee ba******s. Had the proper midge head nets, gloves ,hats with brims, plastered in Smidge etc . I know the score as I'm from a bit north of there but when they're full on there's nowt to do but get in the tent. I cooked outside though, while running in circles! One of the worst midge experiences I've had and I've been camping in the Highlands trying to swerve the beasties since I was a wee boy. The inside of the fly sheet was black in places with squashed midges and some blood I think. Still stained 2 years later..(Although there is actually a bothy near by if we'd thought about it. )Ran off down Lairig Gruh the next day and didn't stop for breakfast until we got some height.

@@KMilton-iw2tk They must be a super strength evolved beastie at that place from feasting on the blood of tough hikers for centuries! I wonder if they were a factor in how fell running started 🤔😆 I was so amazed when I was on the lairig Gruh middle of May this year and we didn’t see a single midge!
