@@villemononen5303 Well I could do without your anti-American insult, since I am an American and I know many American folks who have watched that excellent movie....and it is not merely Americans only, who avoid it or who have not even heard of it, since it is a soviet movie from the 80s that had no wide release. You could have made your point without the latent anti-Americanism.

Its been 38 years since I took that midnight bus ride to Parris Island, and I can still close my eyes and remember every little detail about Boot Camp. Marching to the chow hall for breakfast on those empty streets in the silent darkness, running with packs and M16A2's down the overgrown runways of the old airfield, the weeks spent at the rifle range qualifying, and of course the gas chamber and getting eaten alive by sand fleas. 14 weeks there felt like a lifetime. Semper Fi to all my fellow Marines.

I am guessing you joined the USMC around 1987, the same year this movie was made? This was based upon "The Short-Timers" a semi-autobiographical novel by veteran Jerry Gustave Hasford, about his experience in Vietnam (specifically 1968). At that time they still primarily uses the M14 until a year later in 1969 when the M16A1 became more dominant by US troops. Due to the draft (which actually did include some Marines) just about every boot camp had their training shortened at some point especially between the years of 66 to and end of 68. Originally 13 for the USMC, but some went as short as 8 weeks to bolster US troops. An almost 2 decade difference between 68 and 87.

@@dmraven Yep, I went to boot camp on August 5th, 1986. We used the M16A2 at that time. It had a selector with a three round burst instead of fully automatic like the M16A1, as well as other changes in design.

That's about how it was. I served 20 years in the Marine Corp and two combat tours in Vietnam. The first tour as a machine gunner (0331) in 1965-66 and the second as a Platoon commander (0369) of a CAP platoon in 1970-71. I retired after 20 years and had a 30 year career as a California police officer ( Marin County). What I learned in the Marine Corps has helped me all my life. I highly recommend it to anyone needing direction and wishing to learn self discipline . Tom Boyte GySgt. USMC, retired Bronze Star, Purple Heart

The songs Papa om Maumau and The Bird were recorded originally by The Remingtons. The VC would booby trap cans,( because Americans would kick them). and babies. It was a very brutal war and a lot of men never recovered. These guys are just teenagers. Kids. I had friends who never came back. It's one thing when you know who the enemy is, but it wasn't that kind of war. RIP for all the soldiers who never returned.

You asked about the Drill Instructor inspecting the recruits standing on their foot lockers. Every night before bed, the DIs inspect every recruit for bruises, injuries, hygiene, a fresh shave, nose and ear hairs, blisters, hang nails. The difference between the movie, and bootcamp of 1990', was that as the DI stood in front of each recruit, if there were no physical, mental or other problems to report, the recruits would shout- Recruit "insert name" has no problems to report at this time sir. If something was wrong with you, that was a time to report it to them, and the inspections kept recruits from hiding injuries and such to the DIs. An injury or sickness that required missing more than a day or two might get you dropped from your platoon, put on injured/ sick status, and after recovering you catch up with the next Company going through training. Not something you want to happen! You want to finish ASAP!!!

Keeping your nails trimmed and clean is for hygiene and preventing hangnails which can cause an infection. The pain they cause also is a problem and a distraction. A hangnail on your toe can cause mobility problems so you're in trouble if you need to run for safety. You also don't want your nails getting caught on anything and getting ripped off.

this movie always makes me think of fullmetal alchemist. lol i always heard people say that joining the military will make a man out out you, but this makes it look like it does the opposite. this looked like the kind of stuff that happens in prison. i felt like i was watching a 90's episode of scared straight. lol this was like watching major payne but without all of the jokes and comedy. lol the scene with the one soldier firing at innocent people was messed up. it reminds me of a similar thing that happened years back where some american soldiers posed with the bodies of the enemy soldiers in a joking way and got punished for it. but those soldiers being the enemy was one thing, seeing him do that to innocent civilians that weren't even in the war and having fun was even more cruel and messed up. i bet it happens in real life all the time and they get away with it because it never gets out. but the fingernails thing i'm not sure about. maybe it was just to pass inspection? like clean rooms and clean bodies. and somebody like him lioks like he wouldn't tolerate dirty fingernails.

They shave your head as part of turning you into a number, but they say it's incase you ged a head injury, it's easier to treat.

"So the enemy can't grab u by the hair & cut your throat." I've heard that (most recently in a Canadian basic training KZbin video) but never bought it. If the enemy is that close, u hv more probs. It's more for hygiene & uniformity (which is critical even tho many will scoff, but many don't get it). This said, there's arguments for waivers under certain circumstances. Recently, I saw video on a Sikh-American who was allowed to keep his hair in accordance w/his religion & wear his head wear also. Sikhs are honorable people w/historical military creds. As a veteran, I'd rather serve w/a Sikh-American (w/his hair & head dress) whose values & character are in-line w/military service than a clown I wldn't be able to trust. W/recruiting crisis we & other western nations in, one can say that the force is better w/his talent that w/out it. So, there are rules & exceptions. That's life. Just my opinion.

@@CampCrystalCharlie You get that Pyle was mentally disabled (see McNamara's Morons) and that he was drafted to fight in a war against his will? He was probably a simple farm hand from Idaho, and now people are yelling at him, choking him, humiliating him, beating him, and that's before he'd be sent off as a human bullet catcher.
