Good point, I do like Pipedream except for the pricing which also seems to suffer Zapieritis a bit. And yeah, n8n is excellent for just proving things out and quickly building but if I started having commercial success and needed to scale up I'd for sure run everything somewhere else like AWS (or even Vercel, my guilty pleasure)

N8N integration with different services, such as KZbin, Blogs, social media... and so on I hope you do it with your normal style just like what you did in this video. Honestly, I enjoyed it and found it fun and educational.

I did a self-hosted installation about 12 months ago as a test. But came unstuck due to limitations in the number of workflows allowed, a limitation on the number of users in an account, and particularly a limit on being able to share edit access to a workflow. These just ultimately became complete showstoppers. If all of these barriers have been eliminated then it could be worth considering again.

I agree that Zapier as brand leader is absolutely outrageous with its pricing, so I can see the benefit of Make over zapier on price alone. Not sure if $6/month for a self hosted solution by n8n really competes all that well with Make's starter plan which you do not need to self host and comes with 10,000 executions for $10.59. I like that there's a third option for sure, the more the better, but I think both n8n and Make are essentially going after zapier client base rather than competing with each other (at least on price).

Fair point, but here's why I think it's important to self-host this type of tool: Your automations platform can be used to build an entire business (as I will show on this channel (since it's a lot faster than trying to write something entirely in code)). If you're building a business for unknown scale and duration, it's nice to have a back-end where you're not overpaying or constantly worrying about going over your executions limit. That's just one more thing to think about, which I try to limit as much as possible. I've also been trying out Make to see if it has any features I want (like posting content to TikTok) but the UX is just confusing and feels inferior. So to have n8n be cheaper as well when you self-host it just feels like a no-brainer.

n8n is open source and you can self host it completely free or even deploy it on AWS (not sure why you would though as it’s extremely simple to get it running locally in Docker).

The operation cost comparison between make and n8n should be much more drastic because you compared the base plan of Make. In Make, if you want variables, you have to upgrade to the team plan which is 3x the cost of the base plan. 😅

@@adomakins it's more a privacy principle thing - of course "I" am ok being tracked by this Google account, but if I wanted/needed to, I could go incognito and use a VPN. With Arc you give that option away and must trust Arc. Of course I'm not doing anything illegal, but neither are people living under repressive governments. So personally I just don't accept terms that normalise surveillance - especially after what we've just lived through, eg. people were arrested for Facebook comments and that happened in 'free' Australia!

The one thing I've always wondered about rolling your own Zapier/Make is the connections to apps. I guess I was under the impression that those connections were custom to, say, Zapier. Are you saying that if Zapier has a connection to it then we can also make a connection to it via Webhooks? I figured not all the apps supported Webhooks and even many that do don't have public documentation for it. Thoughts?

Great point! You will run into scenarios where the API is not public, and is proprietary to Make or Zapier. A great example is social media schedulers, for some reason this is a hard niche to find an API for. But a lot more of them have Zapier or Make integrations. Other times, there might be a public API but it's a bit confusing, and it's usually easier/faster to use one made by Make or Zapier. On the whole, I still prefer n8n for the pricing and superior user experience. If I need to, I'll pay $10 a month to Make to use their connections worst-case scenario, but there's almost always a workaround.

Yep, definitely cases where API's are not public & these overpriced clunky, dumbed-down tools are the only option. Cognito Forms is one such example, where there is no public API & programatic access is only available with these (and maybe Microsoft Power Apps, or whatever they call their junk product).

Just a small correction, assume that a basic lambda call with 128MB of Memory actually has a basic execution of 3 seconds, hardly get's lower. I am not sure about the 512MB of memory, but keep in mind you have to count the startup time which has a cost aswell. But other than that, I agree the argument, very well explained. Also i trurly belive serverless can be nice sometimes but companies want to use it everywhere creating crazy prices..

Yes I did, it just looked so corporate-y and oldschool that I didn't consider it. Maybe to a fault I just prefer new and trendy looking things. GCP and AWS are very powerful, but I prefer to use Vercel and Trigger and Supabase because they provide a better more modern experience

When it comes to cost, you have a good argument. However, most people and most companies do not have are not software programmers and are technotes. Hence, they would not know where to start setting up your proposal or have the time to learn and manage it. Why don't you set up a SAAS to compete, that is, if you have confidence in your proposal.

the problem that makes me use make is that's difficult sometimes to connect apps and service from getting the tokens and permissions to the code that makes the connection some times you need a business verification like with Facebook but with make you just sign up and their app does the rest.

That's a great point, n8n does have a lot of the same integrations (like Facebook) but there are some things that are only available on Make. I've tried to solve this by posting a webhook over to a free Make account, but for some reason their webhooks weren't working 🤣 But yeah for things where they have a real authentication system like with token refreshes, it can be a real pain in the ass to do it yourself

@@adomakins n8n does have a Facebook connection but but to set it up you need to create an app from meta developer platform, get like there different authentication keys, set the required permissions which needs a f***ing business verification from Facebook and by that point you may also need a pain killer for the headache. I wish there was some solution to make connections as easy as these platforms (zapier, make) without being as expensive.

was kinda confusing to even realize what conclusion or target service all of this was going on about. no reference in title, description not even the video itself. not exactly sure what current n8n onprem limitations are, but since n8n decided to limit those... it seemed way less interesting. not sure if fixed but it had quite some looping limitations in terms of logic, flows and it's practical use. if one goes for oss, on-prem... imho node-red is very underrated. truly oss, fully free. based/focusing on on msging, mqtt industry standard i.e. akin to observer-patterns. and has a rather code/Tech-oriented approach in flows and it's functions.

that's incredibly inaccurate and biased. even though I think it's useful, comparing price of Zapier with AWS and saying its 5 thousand times more expensive - hey bro, Zapier pays engineers, offices, ads, etc. I'm sure it costs them some money. they pay taxes too. unlikely it's even 5x, I'd say. not 5 thousand x, but 5x. also execution times are almost never 1 second, even for short tasks. so it's again a very inaccurate calculation.

I'm not sure about that, but I don't believe so. I think it should be possible to set up two instances, one for development and one for production and then copy your workflows, but you'd be balls deep in your Linux server at that point.
