I Found The Source Of Agates! | Oregon Coast Rockhounding

Welcome to the first video of the channel!
This trip was a lot of fun, and ended up finding the source of where the agates were coming out of the clay. This is on the Oregon coast.
I also ended up finding so many types of agates as well.
The basic chalcedony, carnelian agates, carnelian agates with quartz pockets, botryoidal agates, even a rutilated agate!

Skookum- my aunt talked about camping with her husband there. Rode their horses from Ten Mile to Roseburg. Stayed with friends. Rode horses and camped all the way. She was born in 1892. Archie Bushnell, her husband was an engineer for Douglas Co. Roads Dept. I’ve still huge cones she gave me from Sugar Pine. Always get them out at Christmas. Just a little info. Quartz makes up 86% of the Earth's crust. So there is quite a variety of stones that are quartz. You best tool for identification is a knife blade if your knife can't scratch it it's likely quartz. Knife blade 5 hardness quartz 6-6.5 hardness.

That's good to know, I appreciate that! I do generally carry a pocket knife on me, so that wouldn't be a problem.

Quartz makes up around 12 percent of the crust , while siica makes up the rest of the various silicate. Quartz hardness is 7.

Yeah for sure, I just spent the last few months in Arizona and southern California and everything seem to be sum sorm of quartz, chalcedony , quartzsite ect. Every Rock seem to contain some type of quartz.

But, what they don't tell you is that not all knife hardness is the same. There are many grades of steel. Some are harder and softer than others. So I wouldn't always go for this technique.

I sure wish I was interested in rock hunting when my parents were alive and living in Salem, Oregon. They would take me to the beach when I visited and my mom was always looking for agates. I’m lucky to own a few she found, one as big as a walnut! Now I am a rockhounder and go to the Great Lakes. You found some really awesome agates on this video!!

I have found the Best stuff on 15 Mile road outside of the Dalles Oregon. Backside of the mountain along the Columbia river. It looks like grass land and they geaze cattle but I found some nice road cuts that exposed rock and it's loaded with baseball size agates and amazing Jaspers. Some huge. I had to get a 20in saw to cut them. There's a 15 Mile creek that runs along the road that I am dying to explore but I'm always working when I'm there so I haven't gotten to yet. Head's up if you're in the area.

I wasn't a rock hound but doing this job for 6 years has turned me into one. I do ground maintenance and spray for weed prevention. So I am always looking down and getting everything wet and they pop when they get wet

Nice haul! I live close to Lincoln City and do all my rock hounding there in the gravel in certain areas I call my "sweet spots." I just right down in there and start pushing the rocks around. I find more that way than just walking along the beach.

21.49 Breccia Rock. I took my finds to the Yachats agate and mineral show to have it ID’ed. Some take a nice polish, more so the whitish areas, not so much the tannish parts. If you have a black light, try checking it and some of the other agates out, some will be interesting, but a lot not so much. Happy Hounding!

I am a newbie rockhound and found agates, the past two weeks, at agate Beach in California. Your video is outstanding for a newbie like myself. I appreciate the clear close-up shots to see the difference between each rock and your clear descriptions of each one. Do you tumble your agates?

Thank you very much for the compliment, and I'm glad the video's helping you! I've been to that beach once before as well, but this was before I was making videos. It's a good beach for sure! I don't tumble my agates yet, I prefer the agates to be natural so I'm not likely to get a rotary tumbler, instead I might get a vibratory tumbler which shines up the agates, but doesn't round them off as much.

I was thinking the same thing about getting a vibratory tumbler. It keeps them more in their natural state and it’s a bit faster than tumblers.

@@DutchmansAgates depends where ya hunt some of my spots its all there is find like 2 white agates out of 80 carnelian lol do you live in chehalis? i used to live right by the mouth of the neawakum and chehalis got some killer spots i could share if your in the area again

@@JacobKildall Chehalis isn't far from me, and I've been there about 5/6 times. Only in my latest video was I successful in actually finding a spot where I was finding some fun stuff. In my experience it seems difficult to get down to a gravel bar, or even when I do, it doesn't always contain agates. Any help would be much appreciated! Of course I'll share where I went also. You can also DM me if you'd rather do that.

Are used to hunt agates and such along the Oregon coast as a teen some 40 years ago, just around the Newport area where I lived, I would love to know where you’re finding these rocky beaches?

Nice, there are lots of good beaches around Newport! The trick is to find a gravely beach you know gets covered by the ocean, allowing the rocks to be moved around, mixed up, etc. It's a lot of driving around, going down to beaches that appear promising.

Oregon seems to have a lot of green jasper, which I don't find that much at the spots I frequent.

That's easy, this isn't a well known spot like Damon point. Any well known spots I'll always share. If it's a spot I had to find myself I don't. Which to be clear is unfortunate, however I rely on finding things to make a good video. I hope you understand.

I'm not digging, I'm surface searching. We don't want to expediate erosion, even if the ocean does that naturally.

It is actually illegal to “dig” into the cliff faces on the coast of Oregon. Many sections of the 101 have already eroded and had to be rebuilt. The less erosion the better.

I compare rock spots to a favorite fishing hole. You have time involved in figuring out just the right spot....the last thing u wanna do is tell everyone so they can just show up & catch all the fish.
