Not to sound like an advertisement for Sweetwater, but not long ago I too built my own studio. Nothing like this, but when I didn't know what to buy to make everything work, I called the engineers at Sweetwater and they were awesome. They asked all the right questions, found out what my goal was for the output of the studio and we went from there. I did purchase it all from them as a way of "paying" for their help, but without them I could never have figured out what to buy on my own. Those dudes and dudettes were totally down with it. Well done Rhett. I am so envious. That motorized desk is the bomb.

4:38 pro location sound guy chiming in - Don't use a shotgun mic indoors!!! Shotgun mics indoors are what i would choose for MORE room sound. The pickup pattern isn't just coming out of the front of the mic but a decent amount at the back as well. Outdoors, that isn't much an issue. Indoors, its like one mic pointing where you want it and another quieter one pointing away from where you want it ie pointing at the reflections you're taking out later in RX. Provided you have a means to mount the mic just out of frame, Buy a Sennheiser MKH50 Hypercardioid. That mic is more or less industry standard for indoor dialogue, and smokes a Shotgun mic in that situation. Also rules for female vocal, acoustic guitar, and was made for classical string instruments as far as i know.
@compucorder64
@compucorder64 8 күн бұрын
You're right. But I reckon Rhett just mispoke. Good chance the mic he pointed toward was an MKH50 hypercardiod and he just called it a shotgun mic because it has that look. But, afaik Philip Conrad, his bass player friend is a pro location sound guy too so he probably had good pointers, like you are giving. Now, I just wish MKH50s weren't so pricey, even if they are worth it.

Your significant other is a saint to support you in this project. Mine also helped with the covering of my homemade traps. I am just a home hobbyist, but after I made my room "tight" like you did, the first time I played my acoustic guitar in the space I was like, "Man, this sound like crap now." LOL. Because the space is dead! Now that said, I can add "room" with reverb and control it. Just some "trap" humor. My nemesis is dust. My dog hangs with me and it seems all the electronics is a dust magnet. So I updated my desk for better cable management and put it on wheels so I can clean easier. I know when to change my HVAC filters by the dust build up in my man cave studio. Thanks for sharing.

Living the dream, man! Great video and for a full time musician and video creator, this looks like a great space for you. Having gone through my two home studios (just a hobby studio and home office) in two different apartments, the biggest thing for anyone wanting to make their own home studio space is to really think about functionality of the space. I appreciate that you didn't sugar coat the amount of work needed to get to the goal post. My rooms have always needed to be a guest room, a storage space, a recording and mixing space, a home office for me and my wife, and a voice over/editing room. Inevitably, it takes some time and trial and error to find the optimal setup and layout. So, for those interested in doing their own home studio, spend some time getting your stuff into your space and spend some time moving everything around before plugging in and hooking up. Just get a feel for your space - what functions well, what feels good, and what makes you want to be in the space. It might take a few iterations, but when you finally land on it, you can go full bore with your treatment and hooking things up. You'll be much happier taking a few days or even a few weeks trying out different solutions instead of settling on the first thing only to find it isn't optimal for you or your space. Let your room evolve and give it that time. You'll be much happier. Enjoy your room, Rhett.

From a computer engineer, obsessed with connectivity and also with ADHD, I admire your forethought for layout and pre-connecting your patch bay. That was fantastic! What a journey!! I've never built a home studio but I have done lots of construction over the years and building stuff can start out fun but then it quickly becomes overwhelming. I'm 59 and I was just diagnosed with ADHD this year! I know I've always had it but being a software developer and an artist and a musician and a construction worker I was able to live with the ADHD and actually I think it was a benefit for the software development world I lived in for 30 years. I think I've reached a point in my life where my brain is slowing down and the amount of thought and projects I can juggle at the same time has drastically been reduced. Anyway all that to say I think you did an amazing job and with the support and help of your wife and your friends you have built an amazing studio! I look forward to the new videos and music that comes out of your new space!!

For anyone doing this, I’d recommend using uncompressed fluffy insulation rather than rigid. It actually absorbs low frequencies better. It’s also cheaper. To keep the fibers from coming out of the fixtures, you can put a layer of poly fil (comes in rolls at any fabric store) over the insulation, then a layer of fabric. It not only keeps the fibers fully contained but makes the fabric itself look great. Been working in my space for three years and haven’t had any of the fibers come out. I have a small control room in my upstairs level living room, the entire room was treated floor to ceiling with fixtures, designed by an acoustician. The consultation didn’t cost much when you consider it was built without any trial and error. Also didn’t have any woodworking skills at the start, and learned as I built. It can be done to a super high standard even by a novice. Amazing space to work in. Also- for ceiling clouds, consider renting a drywall lift. One of my clouds was HUGE, and this made installing them super easy.

Can't you just buy the pink stuff in it's wrapping and throw it in a large pillow case ( acoustic material wrap and tape it on an end facing the wall) and call it a day? I built a bunch of panels but I have honestly been thinking of just throwing the pink stuff pre wrapped into a few corners.

Bro you deserve this. As a fellow person on KZbin who plays guitar and produces in a bedroom, I felt all of this. Shout out to the part where you’re clapping before and after!! As you admit, it is probably not the way a professional acoustician would approach it. But in this day where we’re learning about the value of what professionals/institutions do while being constrained by a budget and other limits and yet still motivated to go for it and be ambitious, I have only respect and appreciation for this whole video.

Hi Rhett, I really enjoyed this video so I have gone through it twice, the result is amazing! but what I enjoy more on this kind of projects (having done similar projects myself) is the entire process, I know by experience that there are moments of frustration, moments when you are tired or bored, moments when you regret starting the journey but when you are finally done you thank yourself as you have just come with not only the end result but with a lot of learning. So congratulations! On a side note, I'm an electronics engineer with 20+ experience in Embedded SW development, the last 9 of those years I've being working for a very well worldwide known company that pretty much develops audio products and solutions, even when my area of experience is more on the control side I have learned some few things about audio as result of work and interests, so one of those things I've heard is a good practice when designing audio rooms: your walls should not resemble the wall in front of them, meaning the audio traps/treatment in your left wall should not be similar to the right wall, and the same for the front and back walls. What I think this prevents is to have frequencies that are just jumping from one side to the other and never or take time to stop. It's just a comment, hope you anyway don't have that here. Regards!

I know this is the worst advice to give after a project is done BUT....from a video lighting standpoint, it would have been smart to leave the ceiling white and wrap your cloud baffles white as well. This would allow the entire ceiling to be white, look clean, and most importantly it would let you fire lights into the ceiling for soft fill if you ever needed it. With black, it's going to be hard to bounce light off the ceiling and with the pink walls/ceiling you will definitely get a lot of magenta color casts with your lighting. It's going to force you to direct light everything meaning a light pointed at you and your source verse indirect lighting where you could install powerful lights bouncing into your ceiling for a broader, softer light source. I fear you have made a dark pink cave that will definitely have a vibe but might not be the most flexible space if you ever want to film wider shots. -Patrick

I'm doing something similar in my smaller and much more modest home studio-fixing the acoustics before I mess around with speaker correction. I knew I had a low end problem, just from listening to music, but I underestimated how serious it was. As a first, quick-and-dirty measurement, I used a free oscillator plug-in to manually sweep through frequencies with a sinusoid waveform (I think it was Melda's MOscillator), and there were some whopper resonances. Later, I used the free Room EQ Wizard app, and an affordable calibrated measurement mic, to more carefully measure the response at my mixing position. I have just one free corner, and I bought a corner bass trap from ATS Acoustics for it, as well as a tri-corner trap for the opposite corner (where the corner meets the ceiling). I sent the measurements to ATS and they helped me pick the traps and plan the install (working around moldings, etc.). I'll hopefully be installing it this coming weekend. I hope it makes a noticeable difference! The room doubles as my office, and has acoustic tiles on the ceiling, and shelving on all walls, which turns out to be lucky in terms of removing reflections without requiring more acoustic panels. I'm pretty good with home improvement/woodworking, but decided to buy the traps, partly because ATS has good prices (and I got them during black Friday, 10% off), but mainly from putting a modest value on the time and headache saved, and realizing I wouldn't really be saving anything via DIY. Watching your video made me glad about that decision. 8-) That said, well done, and I hope you feel pride in all of that work. -Tom

Proper sound treatment made a huge difference to my studio - best studio money I ever spent. Like you said, it makes you want to be there. The other thing I've learned over the years - make little changes to the layout every so often. Obviously changes in equipment preferences and usage will drive these changes, but you will be surprised how much moving a rack or reshuffling some gear can make the whole space feel exciting again.

Nice project, well done! I'm with the other guy, the variation of where your bass is "loudest" vs "less loud" is due to the length of the sound wave at the bass frequency vs the the wavelength of higher frequencies.....in a small space, this makes a big difference to "perceived" volume at each frequency at each place in the space.....

Looks and sounds great! You essentially coulda stopped the video at the clap because WOW! The difference is night and day and it would have been the ultimate expression of why you took the time to redo the room in the first place. As someone who recently set up a dedicated music room recently I can say that it takes an incredible amount of planning and logistics to get it to become a reality. I cut corners that I wish I hadn’t because the acoustics suck but I also only do a fraction of what you do in yours. It works for me. For now. And it’s an awesome sanctuary for creativity which I suppose is half the proverbial battle. Thanks for the share. It was worth the hour 👍🏼

I feel better about my abilities after watching this video. I did this in my project studio, by myself, about 2 years ago. My ceilings aren't as tall as his and I used a different mounting method for the clouds, so that part wasn't as bad for me. But I found that he went through the same process I did, almost step by step, based on the same online research and "rules" I followed. Especially things like hunting for the sweet spot and treating the *actual* back wall beyond the drywall. I also got huge improvements, though I think my room might be a little too dead in the MF and HF ranges compared to the LF Great results and great video!

I’m due a declutter and re think. It’s been a pleasure watching your journey over the last hour. Thanks for the attention to detail. Great work. I hope you enjoy your new room. Enjoy NAMM. Rob.

Well then. I watched it all the way thru.Thank you for giving examples of the how and why of thinking it through, how difficult it is to do things correctly, how much time EVERYTHING takes to do it the smartest way. Your video on this was really informative and funny at the same time. I think I said "know what you mean." numerous times, along with thinking, "I'm not the only one". Also, great job by Tilly! Black Walnut is incredibly cool wood as well. So beautiful. Can't wait to watch the "building of" video. Thanks again, Rhett, have fun in Anaheim.

It’s so crazy because I found Acoustic Insider and been doing the Build a Better Bass Trap course of his and without finishing the course, just by finding the sweet spot of the bass and stereo field I notice an IMMEDIATE difference. Love how your space has finished up and looking forward to mine looking similar

That is a ton of work, Rhett! It came out great. It does definitely look like a space with a vibe. I’d want to just hang out in there, too. Tilly did a pro job on that fabric covering. They look super sharp. Enjoy NAMM!

Great job man! 🤠🤠 There will be nothing better than working in that space that you designed and built yourself. Way better than buying a solution and having it installed by others. Well done 👍🏼

Thanks for sharing the overhaul of the studio! I just bought a small shelf unit for my modest pile of gear (pedals, audio interface, desktop amp) as I've wanted to put more time in with it all. I am totally experiencing that same sense of wanting to just sit with that you talked about with your whole studio. I think it's the sign of a job well done.

Love the vid. Congrats on the studio space man. Awesome work all round Rhett and Co. Really inspiring watching this whilst planning mine, as I make the switch to full time! As an avid DIY renovator and fellow sparkly brain, I feel your pain jumping into the project and realising that you've miscalculated or forgotten one of the steps.

I have to agree with you Rhett. Tilly killed it with the panels. They do look awesome!

I empathize so much with this. I built panels and a small cloud for a home theater. I made the boxes exactly the size of one piece of insulation just to avoid some of the issues you ran into either way I agree that it was definitely worth the time and the effort and the expense. Congrats on the new space.

I commend the effort and empathize with the tediousness of building your own acoustic panels. I have made a lot of them over the years at various times. Most recently I made 15 acoustic blocks from those cheap, stackable storage crates that are mostly open on their 5 surfaces. I lined them with that fabric used to cover the bottoms of furniture and filled them with Safe n Sound. Getting the fabric cut and lining the crates was a bit of a pain but the 10x15x12 crates are a fantastic configurable gobo. I covered the open side with pegboard incase I want a reflective side. Of all the acoustic treatment I've made, that gobo is the most satisfying because it really squelches the drum kit when it's in front. You project here is making me think of knocking out a few more larger wall modules. One suggestion is to double the thickness of the insulation in your modules if you have the room. One layer will knock down some decent midrange but not much on the low, lows.

The reason for the 38% debate... is because people "falsely think" that a 38% guideline can work for every room length, but it mathematically cannot. For clarity 38% was only ever a general suggestion and never an accurate number. The accurate number is 39.6%. The 4th harmonic node is at 37.5% and the 6th harmonic node is at 41.7%. So we can easily see that placing your head in between the 4th and 6th harmonic nodes is (41.7% + 37.5%) / 2 = 39.6%. So 38% is closer to sticking your head almost directly on the 4th harmonic low pressure node point, which is bad. For a room length of 15'-6" the 4th harmonic node is 146 Hz and the 6th node is 219 Hz. For various room lengths the mathematical reality is that for smaller room lengths the Listening Position between node points will land at 45.8%, for medium length rooms the Listening Position will be at 39.6% and for longer room lengths the Listening Position will be at 32.8%. The 38% rule is only a debate because people aren't understanding how to plot low pressure harmonic node points in a room and they are not using a CAD program to map out all out. Additionally your room length is 15'-6" not 18' into a closed closet. At 15'-6" the Listening Position at 39.6% will land at 6'-1 3/4" (73-3/4" or 74") from the front wall.

Firstly, congrats on the new space! Looks amazing! Just had a table with 16u rack space built in made by a local wood shop, really turned out nice. I'm looking for some legs just like the one's you have here on your new desk. I got some similar ones on amazon and they are not so nice lol Anyway, if you could shoot me the brand name or something for those legs, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
