The Cherokee 180 is a fabulous bird! A friend and myself just purchased a 1963 Cherokee 180-B a few weeks ago. 4400 TT, 740 on Lycoming factory overhaul. I’ve done most of my time building, instrument, & commercial single in one. I dropped the 172, & high wing in general, just after my private checkride, and never looked back! Even did comm multi in a Seminole. Love the Piper line-up!

When turning the trim crank, envision the crank handle hits the left seater’s head. If you hit the back of their head, their nose will go down. If you hit their forehead, the nose rises.

Feels like an awful design from the beginning if such reminders are needed. Even if it's in the early planes I can't understand why the engineers were happy with the solution.
@MerlinspopTBH3 жыл бұрын
It’s the same as used on the Comanche line before. It becomes second nature after one flight. It may be inconvenient to reach up constantly, but it has an advantage over the later pa28 trim wheel in that you don’t have to cram you hand down between the seats especially if your passenger is someone whose thigh you don’t want to rub. Either system is easy. The design I don’t like is the vertical metal wheel overhead waiting to split your forehead.

Wow this is interesting, my flight school has both the 180s and 140s. But this 180 is designed like all of our 140s, the 2 side windows, lollipop throttle, even the trim. They are all like our 140s. Our 180s have T-Throttles a trim wheel and 3 side windows

My flight school has both 140s and 180s. I've been endorsed to Solo in both. Although it's back to the 140 for me since that's what's used the most for check rides. I'd take the 180 any day though.

I learned on a 62 Cherokee 180. I loved those bowtie yokes. I have a Skylane now, but I do really miss those yokes and the trim handle (although the trim wheel is a bit more intuitive, I always had to stop and think which way to spin the trim on the cherokee)

The 180 predates the Archer. In the 60’s we had the 140/160/180 and now we have Warrior (161) and Archer (181). I believe this 180 is a 1963.

Well, it’s not actually a checkride. It’s for insurance purposes. Even though I have many hours in this type, the owner hasn’t seen me fly it other than in videos. Sitting right or left doesn’t really make a difference to me as I’m comfortable both sides. I’ll be instructing in it which will mean sitting on the right 🤷🏼♂️

What is the point of Checkouts? Is it an insurance requirement for the owner of the Aircraft. Because to be honest it feels like just money scam, for an example our school rents out the planes. After we pass we have to be checked out by the company even though it is the same planes, and with you here. Lkke you even said with 3000 hours, if you couldn't fly the plane then something else is more wrong.
@LewDixAviation3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a typical flight school doing what flight schools do: milk people for money. In my situation it’s an insurance requirement because I had never touched this particular plane before.
