Doug came back to try out the Cherokee! AND HE LOVED IT. Not a surprise to be honest. He did a great job for someone that had never flown a PA28 before!
I wanted to try something 'funky' so requested a power off approach to the opposite runway but tower had other, equally testing ideas. A power off approach on climb-out at 700 feet is no joke. Low altitude, low airspeed (forgive the drama at the beginning of the video). What do you do, where do you go? It is possible to get back to a runway, but you have to act fast! I was happy with how that approach went and thanks to Doug for allowing me to demonstrate.

Lost an engine in a C172 on departure at 1600ft out of KDAB. Immediately pointed to the intersecting runway and we made it. We managed to Vx up to about 3000ft with the airspeed we had. Only engine issues I've had in a small plane. Now I fly the KC-135R and we have 4 engines :)

Agree 100% on Cherokee vs 172. Trained on 172, moved to Cherokee. Will never go back to 172, it feels and sounds like a sewing machine with wings. Cherokee is a lovely aircraft with predictable handling.

I used to love power off landings. I didn’t do them where I turned back onto the opposite runway or onto an alternative runway. I always lost my engine on the downwind and came into the runway like Roger Ramjet.

Having never flown a Cessna (not even in training), but having owned a RIB for short time I agree, the Pipers are great. Well done Doug, no going back now right!

Once you go low wing then you won't go back. The heavy fridge C172 is a great stable trainer but Piper Arrow, Archer, or Warrior are the dream 😍

Really interesting vid, very cool all the way around. My dad's old Instructor got him to similar and land across the grass down hill (instead of the tarmac). It was safe and great learning experience (really good Instructor well known and respected), and some years later dad had an engine failure and knew what to do when it came to do it for real.

I'm only at two lessons so far but already it's amazing how well these aircraft can fly. Minimal instruction is necessary to learn normal condition flight. As a student I want to spend my money learning about what to do when the abnormal happens. I'm weird but these lessons are what excite me as a new pilot (old person). edit: started viewing weeks ago and subscribed today. These videos are invaluable as an addendum to my ground and in-flight training. Thank you!!

Flew 172s and flew pa28s and I’ll always take a archer over a Cessna. Plane is so stable and flies itself.

Are we sure this is his first time in a Cherokee? It seems like he's already a pilot. It's not like he's just naturally nailing stalls or steep turns either, these are landings, which are hard enough even for experienced pilots to do well consistently

Lew to student: Here are the things you do when you're out solo and you lose an engine. 1. Get your logbook, find all pages with my signature, tear out those pages, and chuck them out the window 2. Then, set for best glide and land straight ahead. Got it? Also, for all the ragging on Cessna's, which I agree with.... I haven't flown a Piper yet, but I transitioned *really* quickly to a Katana DA20 after over 160 hours in Cessna's. My landings were better, the visibility was better. Even had to throw in a couple systems - fuel pump and the blue prop lever. The control stick was also really easy to transition to.

I had total engine failure on take off in a Mooney, 100 feet off the ground, couldnt land straight ahead or I would've flown through some houses. I was able to land on an overpass and only property damage to a car and the plane occurred.

Me and my father took off at Chattanooga heading to Knoxville. We just filled our fuel tanks and the engine died on tack off it was very IFR we where in the sope at 600 feet and the engine died at 1000 feet we made it back to the runway. It was not fun but it proves that you can do that in a pinch.

Hey Lewis, I realize the POH says 73 KIAS for power off landing; however, rather than best glide would it perhaps be better to shoot for a Defined Minimum Maneuvering Speed (1.404 VS1) in this situation? For the clean stall speed of 58 KIAS the DMMS works out to be slightly over 81 KIAS. The teachings of Dan Gryder have seeped into my brain but I would be interested in your opinion. I personally think that his idea of AQP for general aviation is a great thing.

I think min maneuvering speed is set up for bigger, heavier airliners to give you a reference on a minimum to avoid when you’re slow and have flaps etc. Makes complete sense for that. Doesn’t make sense for this particular situation. Glide speed gives the best lift to drag ratio, anything above or blow that diminishes lift and ultimately could result in not making your point of landing. I’m not clued up on what people are teaching with DMMS in GA but my opinion is that we have stall speeds and bank angle to stall speed charts to know what speeds to stay above. I don’t think it necessary to instruct a student to come in fast on an approach.. again I’m not 100% on what is being taught but that was my take away when I read up on it.

There is no need to do a side slip in a PA28 or in fact any aircraft if you know how to fly it. The PA28 is a very honest aircraft. Very smooth controls, even when spinning the aircraft. retired CPL.

@@brycemoseman9939 The PA28 has been used for spinning in n Australia and New Zealand for years. I was asked to demonstrate spinning in a CPL flight test in a PA28. It spins well. The problem is it's prowned to high-speed stalling on recovery, like all modern light aircraft. are to-day.

You are not alone. I am never scared climbing into an airplane regarding heights but I won’t go up high on a ladder or up on a roof. Something about being in the plane that never makes me feel the height. Go figure
