I spent five years working in a trophy shop using a laser just like that one to engrave names and graphics onto metal, plastic, and wood. It was a very creative and fun job, getting to pick fonts and design layouts for various awards and name tags and such! Just like you did, I had to calibrate the laser for each and every type of material I worked with. Save the settings so you don't have to do that again! Be sure to ventilate the area extremely well. The unit has a fan, but don't just have all those toxic fumes sit in that shed. In my old shop, we had a vacuum tube attached to the unit's exhaust port that would pull the exhaust up to the roof of our building. You're going to need something like that to keep the area breathable. Even with the precautions I took, I was still concerned with how much I could smell the burning chemicals all day. They couldn't have been good for me. Also, it may be tempting to set it and walk away, but you've got to check on it regularly, because I've had occasional imperfections in the materials catch fire before. Even if it doesn't spread, it'll do serious damage to your machine if you're not there to put it out quickly. It worked out in the store because I was always sitting right next to the machine designing the next job while I waited for the last one to finish. Sometimes I had half a dozen jobs ready and queued up. So I would often glance back at the machine to make sure it hadn't burst into flames. It'll just happen every so often, even with settings that are normally safe. Luckily it always went out quick and almost never did any real damage. I would just put new material in and restart the job. Have fun!

we have 3 laser cutters at school, so some fun things to do with it is engrave food, like thicc pancakes, or a slab of ham, which you can cut and engrave, but also, think 3d, basically the standard "folding a box with paper" thing you can also do with wood, so don't forget to not just engrave and cut 2d stuff, but also think in the 3rd dimension and make "3d printer" type objects, or build like a small desk or closet with it (which can also work great in combination with your miniatures), have fun :)

I work with laser cut acrylic everyday - it’s my main medium for creating miniature wearable artworks! (Aka- brooches) and it’s sooo fun. The layering and 3-D possibilities are endless, I reckon you’ll have a blast with this cutter Jazza! Also, not going to lie- I totally wish I had that machine in my shed. I have to outsource with a laser cutting lab because lasers are heckin’ expensive... but that’s something to note for anyone wanting to create using a laser cutter - it is possible to send your designs off and have someone else cut them for you!
@TheStitchpanda

Something that would be really cool to see you conceptualize and laser cut would be a 3D wooden animal puzzle. Y'know those ones were it's a bunch of individually cut wood peices that slot into eachother to create a standing 3D sculpture. It wood be a great project to get you thinking outside the box with your new toy 😜

Jazza, super important word about plywood! The glue that holds the ply together is toxic when you use a laser printer. Balsa wood is safe to cut, but plywood is very dangerous. My college has a few laser printers and they will not allow people to cut plywood for this reason. Please, be careful!

I remember during my time doing GCSE DT really enjoying the convenience and how helpful the school's laser cutter was. I built a cool looking Zelda chest with a Zelda symbol on the wooden arched lid. One of my favourite projects cause of the laser cut symbol on a lovely looking arched lid. With cool acrylic plating, from the laser cutter, on it too.
