56y old lifetime cyclist. Owned more than twenty bikes in the past twenty years. , and my Steamer is one of the most enjoyable day to day rides I’ve ever had. Using 37mm gravels, with the Surly Truckstop raised drops, and Brooks springer saddle. SS is all I need for most of my flat riding. Fast. Comfy. Agile. Wish it had better options for bikepacking. Planning a 500km ride this year.

I really like the color on that frame. the chainring should be in front of the crank though, i have seen those bend like an aluminum can when installed that way. if the chainline is off that much still look into spacers or a different length of bb spindle. just use a bigger cog if you want an easier ratio.
@kccauldron6411

I don't understand. That looks like a tripe chainring crank, and he's running his chainring where the middle ring would sit in the standard triple setup. Why would it be at risk for bending?

Great video man! Loved it. Quick question. I’m a beginner when it comes to bike mechanic work. Beginner meaning never even changed a tired. Do you think it’s realistic for me to build up a fixed gear from a frame set? Granted I take the time to learn an invest in all the tools. I guess my question is, is it a good project to learn on with such a big learning curve? It’s a bit intimidating. Thanks!!
@jeremygoertz
@jeremygoertz 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! For sure. A fixie or even a single speed is a great place to begin. Some of the most frustrating parts of working on bikes (at least used bikes I work on) is getting different shifters and deraileirs to work together. Or find parts for them. Take out the shifty bits and you eliminate a lot of the hard stuff. I’d say go for it! It will be a blast and you’ll learn a lot 👍

Consider wide bars!! Out there, the extra width won't be a problem and I think you'll love the comfort and control you get from wider flat bars.
@jeremygoertz
@jeremygoertz 3 жыл бұрын
I have tried the wide flat bars on my Karate Monkey and I wasn’t a fan. I actually ended up cutting them down and found them more comfortable a little narrower. I wanted to like it but the whole wide bars don’t jive with me for some reason. Which is strange because I’m bigger than the average man. 🤷‍♂️
@theflubbybear
@theflubbybear 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeremygoertz When you say wide, how wide do you mean? Because I meant more like 660-700mm, which is a bit narrower than a lot of people would think since "wide bars" are known to be used for MTB and downhill. In the fg scene when we say wide bars, it could be anything from around 600-800mm
@jeremygoertz
@jeremygoertz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’mm thinking the super wide end of the spectrum. I had some 780s on my KM and rode them for several months. For me they were just too much. I chopped them to 660 and like them so much more now. I actually have a vintage Nitto bar that is fairly narrow that I might put on this. It would be a super clean look.
@theflubbybear
@theflubbybear 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeremygoertz Ah I see. Yeah I agree! 780 is pretty damn wide haha I'm from ny and I like my 660mm bars just fine. Very rarely they're a bit too wide. I tried 710s once and wasn't a huge fan. But if you haven't tried risers on a fixed gear, I'd definitely at least see how it feels if I were you.

Love it! They make some bloody good frames but they're out of my price range. I wanted a 1x1 for years but could never afford it. When I'd finally scraped together enough cash for the frame and some decent components, I got in touch with my nearest dealer, only for them to tell me that Surly had discontinued it! I ended up buying a Kona Unit which is a good bike, but it's just not a Surly. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes on ebay.
