Useful to see the struggles behind it. April makes it look dead easy, but now I'm not so sure 😆 It's something I'd like to learn this year though.

I found it a lot easier with thicker stock. It gives you more time to work. Practice makes perfect though 😅

With that wall thickness you did well Joe!

Thanks Paul! I really struggled to get it to stick without burning through 😅 I’ll get there

This is what learning to weld is all about. Practice, strength test, practice, strength test, etc. I've seen a lot worse welds from someone who has welded for years. Keep it up and you'll soon get there. 👍 One thing I would recommend is changing the earth clamp to something more substantial. 👌 Subbed.

Thanks Harry! Really enjoying practicing but I’ve got a long way to go thats for sure 😅 first goal for me is to be able to consistently get a solid weld that holds up before worrying what it actually looks like haha will have a look at changing the earth clamp. I’m just using it as is out the box at the minute 😅

@@AverageJoesJoinery Definitely. Pretty looking welds will come with practice and experience. 😁

Nice one Joe, I spent ages practising when I first started to weld, just went down the steel yard (couple of good ones in smethwick) bought a load of off cuts and laid down bead after bead till it was straight and not burning through. First thing I made myself was a simple welding table, best thing I ever done, use it for everything

Thanks Ade! When I’ve practice straight lines on scrap they seem to be pretty decent (for me anyway). I’m still struggling with not burning through when joining 2 pieces though. I’m either coming off too soon or too late 😂

I'm a woodworker with a cheap Adi stick welder and a Lidl MIG welder. My welds don't look too clever but they've turned out to be strong and with a large amount of grinding and sanding they look great. My last big project was to make two steel frames to attach nets to to cover our two ponds to keep the herons away. Looking at your pond, that could be your next practice piece. Well done for having a gew.
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary! Was a lot of fun just definitely need more practice 😅 like you say once they’re ground flat it doesn’t matter what the welds look like just as long as they’re strong enough. Great idea to make a frame for the pond. We stretch fishing line over at the moment.

For better penetration at the joints you should grind a little bevel to get the weld deeper
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
I tried grinding a slight bevel and found I went through in those areas. Think I need to practice with some thicker steel too

A grinder can cover a lot of welding issues.
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
Grinder certainly fixes all… as long as the weld has actually stuck haha

Good vid you never tried to hide anything 👍, I have the same sort of welder which I use about once a year. It is difficult to weld thin metal but the thicker the easier. I've made a few things which I am pleased with. After cleaning up the welds they seem alright-ish. My son is a welder and I've even made a couple of items for him and he has been pleased (or polite). Keep at it and I look forward to more welding from you, regards, Fred

Thanks Fred! It’s all a learning curve so I like being able to show where I go wrong and hopefully help prevent others from making the same mistake. Lots more practice needed thats for sure. Great to hear you’ve had some success with this welder. At least I know I can’t blame my tools 😅

I remember trying to weld up a motorbike petrol tank, it took me ages to get to a point where I could weld thin steel - even then it wasn’t perfect! LOL for the thickness of the steel you’re using I wouldn’t do the whole line in one go when you’re starting. The heat build up easily rips through thin stuff. Just a few mm at a time and let it cool between blasts 😁 Keep at it fella!
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! Couldn’t even begin to imagine how hard it is to weld thin steel like that 😅 I did try a couple of tacks on each side before filling in the gaps. Really struggled on the end bit 😅 I’ll get there

Just grind and tidy up where your welds are going to be and where you are placing the earth. When it's all together bring it to someone to get sandblasted back to bare metal.
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Keith! Good shout on getting them sandblasted. Would be a lot quicker and less likely to remove the good material 👌

You owe me a lap top. "Who isn't at the end of the day" I beer snorted, coughed, spewed on it. The funniest s**t I've heard in a while. Damn Best eight seconds I've had to date. I think you did the right thing. Didn't give up on trying-learning but got the project under way. Good time balance, least to me. Cheers man. Peace Three vampires walk into a bar. The first one says, “I’ll have a pint of blood.” The second one says, “I’ll have one, too.” The third one says, “I’ll have a pint of plasma.” The bartender says, “So, that’ll be two bloods and a blood lite?”
@AverageJoesJoinery2 жыл бұрын
Lmao Sorry Dale! 😂 couldn’t resist haha Really being enjoying practicing but I know I would be disappointed with the results if I used it for my desk project. I can always make a set of legs in the future once I think I’m able to produce good enough welds. Blood lite 😂
