Wow. Great video Stan. Perfect timing also. In the May 24th email, I was asking you questions about reseeding a back yard. I went to the local nursery and got more info about how to reseed. I haven't quoted the job yet. I need to remove the pool and the carpet, and a property clean up and see what I am dealing with before I can quote that part of the yard. A lot of good information. I will know more about reseeding the backyard next week. Let me know your upcoming schedule so I can plan to do the reseeding and watch you do the work properly for me. lol

LOVE YOUR UNCLE yall have a hysterical relationship! Wish this video would've been out 3 yrs ago when we were planting an area for our soccer club!!! I pain 400 for grass seed for an area that was waaaayyyyy smaller than what you planted 😢 unfortunately 2019 was the last year we were able to have that area 😢 brings me great sadness that our town does not have an actual designated area for our soccer players :-( our high school has to use the same field as the football teams practice field and since track and field is during the same time as soccer when there is a meet t/f at home discus and shot put uses the same field. Talk about breaking an ankle!! Unfortunately I hate the town we live in because their priorities are all out of wack :-( love your video keep up the amazing work you do and God Bless
@Dirtmonkey2 жыл бұрын
My daughter played soccer all her life and had the same problem in high school, their field would be so messed up from the football players when they had a home game. They also had to travel to their middle school for home games cause that was the only place where the field was..then when she graduates they put in a brand new soccer field at the HS. Of course 🙃
@mommagoody42 жыл бұрын
@@Dirtmonkey well at least your town finally put in a designated field for soccer. I have put in so many stinking requests it's disgusting!!! They have been "building " softball/baseball field for over 4 yrs. They started with the concessions stand and bathrooms then ran out of money. Soooo ignorant. All they had to do was put the field in add some Porta potties and put up a makeshift concessions stand until they had the money but nooooo ignorance got the best of them! Ugh I really hate the town we live ins board! Love your channel so much it is so satisfying watching what you do lol 😆 God Bless and keep up the amazing work

Lmao! Crusty old buzzard, that Uncle Tom! Love him! You’re explanation of the importance of not stratifying is spot on! I was a noob 17 years ago when I started using equipment to clear my 1.4 acres and establish a lawn. I did research out the wazoo and discovered the importance of blending top soil with clay. I used a bobcat with a 7’ wide harley rake attachment to incorporate 100 tons of top soil with the clay, then another 100 tons of topsoil on top. I ended up with about 4 inches of top soil on top of a blend of soil and clay. Used a Penn State seed blend, but with some Creeping Red fescue added to the shady areas. All these years later, I haven’t had to reseed or fertilize, except for a once a year spring fertilization by a local lawn service. I mow to 3 inches, mowing a different pattern each time (verticle one week, then horizontal, then diagonal each way). I let the clipping’s break down, and drag a 6’ land scape rake across the yard every fall to de thatch and scarify. My yard looks great. Not perfect, but my neighbors have commented that I have a nice looking lawn. I figure if the neighbors like it, it’s good enough. At least they ain’t complaining! 😉 Once a lawn is established, I think mowing to 3 inches is the key to a healthy lawn. It makes the roots go deeper (hence the reason for blending soil and clay or sand), it handles hot and dry conditions better than shorter mown grass, and it looks more smooth, masks the imperfections in terrain.

Stan the biggest tip and trick is you can’t be lazy and you gotta be willing too get alittle dirty and sweaty 😂 but your channel really show what kinda person as well as a boss and a lot like myself as far as working and all. I have a grading company and do some finish grading and landscaping but I don’t throw it all off in my employees and wouldn’t ask them to do something I would do but if it’s dangerous I’ll go do it and just have them watch.. put your channel really shows your work ethic and how hard you want it if that makes sense. I can really tell that on a job site you literally will get off a machine and do manual labor and probably out work your employees doing it. But it’s a good thing and it shows your guys and girls if you have any females that work with you that you care and you don’t throw the hard stuff off on just them.. I can’t stand a company owner who does get out and work or just sets around and watches or only set in a machine vs grabbing a rake or shovel and helping. I just don’t really care for that kinda boss or person. I’ve always told everyone even my family I’ll never be that kinda person or boss I’ll get out there and labor and get sweaty and dirty until I can’t walk or move or I’ll just sell everything and hang it up before that day comes… but Stan your a good guy and an awesome businessman and boss. And anyone say well he might get struck blah blah blah that’s part of it your business is your pride and joy and literally like your child and you take pride in it and you want it too be the best and be as perfect and do the best and most perfect job every time even on the days you don’t feel good and are sick. Being strict just shows how much you care and want too check a person too succeed in everything they do.. sorry for the long comment but for some reason watching this video it just hit me like a ton of bricks watching you work and listening too you talk.. stay safe really enjoy the content I can’t watch it as regularly as I want but when I get the chance I try to catch up past 2 months if be swamped so I’ve got a ton too catch up on haha

I tilled my yard several times for weeks after doing a soil correction, before I planted grass. I mean deep too. Luckily I didn't have to truck in any good soil, I just had to move some good dirt from the front and clay soil in the back and mix it up with the tiller. Nice lush yard now, but it is neither easy or quick. I only got it cheap because I did my own labor and didn't have to buy soil.

4:25 "In an area like this..." You're looking at the tree and thinking shade is what's killing the grass around it. I'm wondering what kind of tree it is. That might not be the case. The walnut family produces a natural herbicide called juglone. It prevents any competition for resources within the reach of the tree. The black walnut produces the highest concentration of this.

Seed types Blue Grass, Fescue Grass ( short and tall), Rye Grass (annual and perennial), Blue grass, non-varietals and varietal or patented. Patented blue grasses are going to cost more, Same with fescues and rye grasses. Fescues have both tall and short types, some are better in sun light than shade, blue grasses are cool season grasses. Blue grasses don't take high traffic with out a lot of work, but are the prettiest IMHO. Fescues and rye grasses take higher traffic when mixed with blue grass. Seed rates are different too, with blue grass being the lowest pounds per acre and fescue being the highest, this is due to seed size and how the grasses propagate. Blue grasses by rhizomes plus very small seed sizes and rye grasses and fescues are more by plant count as the higher seed count and weight per acre. Now were I come from clay + sand = brick so I go by compost plus sand and clay mixed, even going to clay and compost tilled to 12" deep. I have worked on many Federal, State and VA job sites. The best equipment to install seed is with a Brillion seeder it actually meters the seed to install it 1/4" into the ground and then compacts or firms up the soil with a cultipacter in one operation. Other methods have a higher loss rates, Brillion is used by all sod farms in the Midwest and northern climes, in the south it's about 50% Brillion and 50% broadcast. Next I would recommend a blanket on your slopes a good wood fiber blanket I prefer over straw blanket as too many places sell cheap straw blankets that are not biodegradable like S-75 , A straw blanket such as S-75 BN will work, I hate the non BN types as the plastic netting needs to be taken up after the grass starts coming up other wise it get in the mowers.

You, obviously, have equipment that can speed up the process. The soil can also be improved by cover cropping as well. Turnip, radishes and such will penetrate the harder soils. Nitrogen fixers will store nitrogen in their root will will then be released when the roots decompose. Leafs and stalks will decompose into that black compost mulch. It'll take longer, but for someone without access to equipment like yours, it's still possible.

How do you feel about rolling after seeding?
@handyscapersllc2 жыл бұрын
I flip the spring rake upside-down and walk back and forth, using a decent amount of pressure on the rake handle, no raking motion. Cause I don't want to drag the seed like you do when raking leaves or grass. I just want to cover the seed. This is the way I was taught, what's your thoughts Stan? Other than that I been doing everything else the same, even mixing seed.

I also turn the rake over to bed the seed. An old landscaper once taught me there are 2 sides to a rake. 🤣 And both sides come in handy. Great job explaining exactly how to plant grass Stan!

I used to flip them upside down as well but now only do it to knock down big chunks. The grass doesn't care which side you use just as long as it gets bedded down.
