We went to the Teeny Tiny Town of Elburg. And when I say small I mean really small. Plus I was asked to close the door on a roof of a church to pay for my admission to the church.

Haha, how fun to see you were in Elburg! I was born very close to that town, so I used to visit regularly when I was a kid so I can shed some light on the little houses. Those tiny houses and the little windows you filmed are connected to a tunnel system (called Kazematten) that was used as a defense system for Elburg. Back in medieval times, when the city was under attack, these tunnels were used as a bunker. The windows were used to shoot at the enemy, mostly with gunpowder, which came to Europe in the 13th century. The little houses are probably ventilation for these tunnels. Another interesting fact: the archway you filmed (called Vischpoort, which means fish gate) was used to serve as a lighthouse since Elburg used to be next to the sea. Our Dutch ancestors turned that sea into land with the famous windmills. Walibi is actually where the sea used to be!

The stone cottages are for airflow into the defense wall that is surrounding Elburg. Originally Elburg was a fortified city. Bit of history: Elburg appears in written records in 796 ( but that just means there were people living on that spot hundreds of years earlier. These places being named requires a certain amount of people that are wealthy enough to be taxed or have being part of a lordship). The defensive moat+ wall was build around 1392-1396. It was also in that period the city got its fishing rights and salt harvest, which made it a rather wealthy city and was incorporated in the "Hansa league" ( also known as the Hanseatic league) which was a whole lot of northern European and western European cities focused on trade ( and because they were spots where specialty goods were created, traded and exported) and because of the insane wealth this league gathered they invested in upgrading the defenses of the cities and villages in their league. So its sort of a defense and trade league. Some important cities in the Hansa League were Lubeck, Hamburg, Bremen (Germany), Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp ( Belgium, just below Netherlands) though loosely aligned they had important hansa offices in their cities. This was the same for London, York, Edingbugh, Sandwish and Dover (UK and Scotland and just like Belgium they were more loosely aligned but had very important trading offices of the hansa), Kiel ( Denmark) major Hansa city, as was Stockholm ( Sweden) and Gdansk ( Poland) to name a few. Its is more nuanced than that with about 100 or so towns and villages that are fully or loosely alligned ( for example like Bruges or London).

If given the chance the one thing I would visit in the Netherlands would be t the Oversteek Bridge at Nijmegen. It incorporates 48 pairs of street lights. They light up at a walking speed every night with a Dutch military veteran walking at the same pace that lights switch on. This is a memorial for the forty-eight US soldiers from the 504th Parachute Infantry Division and the 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion that were killed crossing the river in Operation Market Garden in WW2. I'm not crying your crying...😭

I love that village! It looks like what I remember from over 50 years ago! And even then, when we went into areas like that we felt like we had gone back in time. But I have been puzzled that you're the only ones in the campground in JUNE. As I recall, Europeans loved travel adventures. WE camped around Europe and the campgrounds were busy in May thru September. But that was 55 years ago! Hey! We were up on the tippy top of a church back then too! But then that was a place called the Vatican...and I understand they don't let people go up to the top of the Vatican dome anymore. Oh! And mandeln means almond.

Fun fact: walibi Holland is not in Holland. Walibi is in the province of Flevoland, which is a province we built mostly from scratch out of what used to be sea. We built the afsluitdijk (closure dike) to seperate the Zuiderzee (south sea) from the Noordzee (north sea), and due to fresh water coming from the rivers whilst excess water was pumped out to the Noordzee, the Zuiderzee slowly turned into a freshwater lake now called IJsselmeer (Ijssel lake), they then poldered a section of it, turning it into land which is now most of flevoland; there was one little fishers island, Urk, that was now attached to the new land and also became a town part of the bew province; Urk is known for being an extremely conservative christian town, where many things are still as if they were in the past compared to most of the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Holland is a region within the Netherlands comprising of the provinces of Noord Holland (North Holland) and Zuid Holland (South Holland). But because this region has historically been very influential, it is sometimes (mistakenly) used to describe all of the Netherlands (much to the chagrin of some people living in other provinces), and some within the Netherlands also use it for the entire country when it's convenient to them (especially in things like international trade, tourism, and sports).

I sometimes watch travel videos on KZbin, and I found yours to be particularly outstanding. I'm not sure if the sequence of events was coincidental or part of a deliberate story, but if it was intentional, it was brilliant. It starts with a hook that grabs my attention, revealed by the title. Then, it gradually moves into survival tasks. At one point, I even thought you had been moved into an IKEA experimental town with operating hours, and wouldn't get to eat until the store cafe opened for business. The secondary crisis begins with being trapped in a storybook setting, where the analysts determine if you can find a way to obtain sustenance without having suitable currency, leading to bartering of services for entertainment. I know I'm just recreating what you presented, but it really stuck in my head above anything else I've seen on this platform to date. I truly believe you are onto something here if you created this deliberately, otherwise, you lead a very entertaining life.
