I got rejected from Oxford just over a year ago and now I am over half way through my first year at Imperial College London. I went and visited Oxford last Friday and I was less heartbroken than I thought I would be, even as I walked around the college I had been rejected by and was in awe of how beautiful it was. I think that everything shapes us, the places we are in and the people we meet, and the experiences I have lived have made me me. Before coming to Imperial, I was certain that I would reapply to Oxford for my masters or phd, but now, I much more feel that I should just apply to the programme that most fits with what I want to be doing at the time and I feel must less fixated on the idea of Oxford. Really, who can say what is in the future? Anyways, HUGE CONGRATULATIONS RUBY, I’m sure you’ll have a splendid time there.

This is the perspective which needs to be taken, we have too much of a fixation with prestige and status in our society but its starting to dwindle down now
@agatastaniak7459 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesrowntree It looks very modern. People who attend this university should make videos about it. At first glance looks like a university that tries to create good conditions and infrastructure for students. Ne campus of my very old medevial university actually looks a bit like this. And it was a huge investment that I have watched being built. So anyone looking at Imperial College London can be sure that maybe it doesn't have this medevial charm yet it wasn't cheap to build. That's for sure. As for medevial charm- at my uni we experienced parts of ceiling fall off on our heads once, a lecture room closed due to new discovery of some fresco since our lecture room once was a part of a chapel, flooding of the archive due to changes of ground levels since medevial times and the undeground parts getting closer to current street levels what required students to evacutate the content of the archive carryin heavy, yes centuries old manuscripts out for the museum to save them. Wheareas on our modern campus people enjoyed having elevators, warmer rooms in winter, no ceiling falliing off on their head and even window blinds havng a remote control. So yes, modern maybe doesn't look like Hogwart but it offers some comfy solutions. However I don't regret studying in medevial buildings and if given a chance I would probably enjoy it again. But I think we should not disregard modern campuses as well. My cousin studied and our new campus, designed especially for her biotech studies- entire new wing built with this in mind and she could not complain. For natural sciences and technical studies modern campus is probably better. Especially if you are supposed to have classes in a lab. It usually means more modern equipment easier to work with as well.
@pettali5007 Жыл бұрын
Congratulations. You’re arguably at an even better university. Imperial is fantastic. An undergrad admission is totally different to a post grad admission especially for Cambridge or Oxford. There are many universities that do much better MAs than Oxford it’s also not the same re the doors an Oxford undergrad can open. It’s not necessarily fair but it’s one of those things vis-a-vis the establishment and opportunities re who you meet at Oxford, how that can play out and how alumni favour their own. The Civil Service, the City and the BBC are some of the worst offenders. Kings College London and a number of other unis are particularly highly regarded for an MA. Oxford does not enjoy superior status for English Lit Masters. Oxford needs the MA fees and fights for MA students just as other universities do. It’s a different market. It’s the undergraduate degrees that still carry that status, just as Ivy League universities in America do.

This video really touched me. I'm 24 and finished my bachelor's over a year ago now. When I first finished I, too, had this vast openness that I had no idea how to handle. Taking a year off was the best decision I could have made. I decided that I wouldn't go for a master's in my subject and am instead starting to apply to another bachelor's program, in a different country, in an entirely different subject. Getting past the fear of "starting over" again at 24 has been challenging, but it's good to remember that following my gut is the best choice I can make for myself and my future mental well-being. I have found it can be very isolating to think that I am the only person experiencing challenges or setbacks so thank you for talking about your own experience with failure. I really love your videos because they are full of joy and wisdom. I didn't get accepted into university some years ago and the failure was really hard to manage for me, I was really depressed because it was everything I wanted at that time. I had been doing really well at school, so I hoped I would get to that university. I tried a year later and I was successful this time but thank to that failure I'm more resistant for other failures I must face. I got my Bachelor's degree some years ago, I got accepted to study Master's degree but for the last few months I struggle with mental problems which doesn't let me finish my studies or even get a job. Sometimes it even seems impossible to get up from a bed... and it's hard to deal with the thoughts that other people see me as a lazy person, not the one that is struggling with illness. But your videos really motivate me to get up and be productive (or just to do anything) and I know that not everything must go as planned so I must focus on my health right now, not on my failures or other people's opinions. Thank you so much for that

We have to keep in mind that they can’t accept everyone, no matter how brilliant people get rejected. If the grades are in order people should keep applying, if they truly want the spot! Eventually people will get accepted, it might not be happening, the moment they had dreamed of! My friend studied medicine and is now a doctor, she applied 5 times to her dream education and university. Her mom is also a doctor and she applied 10 times! I study law and applied 2 times. Just make sure the grades are in order and it will happen! I wish more people didn’t view it as a failure and that they shouldn’t apply again...instead shift that mindset and instead shift it to- apply apply apply and apply❤ Another friend wanted to be the first in her family to study at university and she truly struggled to get the basic grades to apply. She also made it and is now a kindergarden teacher😊 Dream and try to execute those dreams!

Congratulations! Totally agree with your comment about failure! I, too, was rejected from Oxford - but subsequently accepted (rejected for English lit, accepted for modern languages). I honestly think I appreciated my time there all the more for it. Always grateful for the experience there, and wish I could do it all over again. Fond memories of nights studying in the gorgeous libraries. There is nothing quite like it. Good luck on your studies!

When I first started watching you I had dropped out of high school. I didn't know what to study in university. Actually I didn't know if I'd be going to university at all. But watching your videos I realized that I liked English Literature and I'm a first year student now. I'm so happy that we could be a part of your journey. And I'm so happy that you got in. I hope you have great time and learn a lot. Thank you for sharing this with us 💖

The absolute joy and excitement I had when I opened KZbin and saw the title was something I had to share with you. I wish you all the best and can’t wait to follow you on your journey! Your reaction to Oxford is my reaction to Aberdeen. I applied to Leicester, Essex Leeds and Southampton because they're somewhat easier to get into, and I got into all of them, what I applied to for fun, because I didn't think I'd get into was Aberdeen in Scotland. I'm so so so excited and happy that I got into my dream school!! Its such a weirdand scary but fun feeling!

Now i have watched it all...Well deserved I must say. I agree with you that now at this stage in your life, studying at Oxford will be better absorbed into your identity, whereas before at the undergrad level maybe it would have engulfed you instead of empower you. I definitely think that you are in a very good position to make the best of this or any equivalent study programme and I am sure that you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. It will help you further advance as a writer and researcher and as a person. We are proud and happy for you!! So interesting to be watching the making of a writer....throughout all these years....Congrats again !!

Ruby, congratulations on getting into Oxford, this is incredible news! As someone who first got rejected from Cambridge and was then accepted into Oxford, I know how much more the success means following the initial failure. I enjoy watching your videos to de-stress while studying at Oxford (I read music), so it’s incredible you’ll actually be studying and vlogging there next year! Also, Jesus is a great choice of college. I have a friend who sings at Jesus college choir (which is non auditioned and super welcoming, would def recommend joining) so I hope I’ll see you around sometime next year! Thank you for continuing to be a wonderful role model both as a student and as a person :)

I bet Oxford still regret not accepting your undergraduate application. Your prodigious study regime, the promotion you gave to Exeter, not just the university, but the town in general and having it documented in your KZbin vlogs must have them kicking themselves. I feel you deserve major congratulations on you current achievement. I for one am really happy for you. Thank you for the videos you post, they form a great part of my chill time. dude this is so wild I feel like we're living the same life lmao - I'm from the US and I watched your original oxford video when I was applying to undergrad and got rejected from oxford, but I just now got accepted to oxford to study for a year as a visiting student instead of a full time undergrad. I'm a junior at harvard right now, so obviously I didn't suffer a really bad rejection, but Ivy day was in April and my oxford rejection was in january so I had a good few months where I totally related to learning those lessons on failure - honestly, I agree that getting rejected for undergrad was one of the best things that could've happened for me; mainly, because harvard has been much more flexible with allowing me leeway to change my concentration, whereas in oxford I would've been stuck with a course of study I no longer want to do, but it's mostly been good for me in an emotional sense. I'm super happy to be going to oxford this october too, but I'm also very glad that I didn't get in until right now. I wasn't ready and needed to learn a crap ton of lessons, so I'm happy that I can finally go to oxford now that my mind's clear and I'm more mature :)

And now here you are! I'm so genuinely happy and excited for you, and thank you for letting thousands of people celebrate with you. 💜💜💜 I'm 32 and while I've been out of school for about 10 years, I've discovered and leaned into my love for learning. I am so incredibly proud of you! As you mentioned, sometimes failure provides a vehicle for you to become a more whole person, while allowing the opportunity for you to take a path different, and possibly more enriching, than you had imagined. Now that your journey has come full circle, Oxford is getting an even stronger and more resilient version of you.

Congratulations Ruby! It’s so true that experiencing rejection is so important when you’re young to developing resilience and learn that failure is not the end. I never learned this until I was in the workplace and it’s so much harder to learn then. Every failure was the end of my world. So pleased that you got to where you wanted to be after all.

I don’t know why but for some reason this made me feel emotional. I’m going to be honest about something I’ve wanted to say so here it goes… I remember feeling triumphant that you hadn’t made it into Oxford. I was insecure with my own academic failure and selfishly took it out on genuine hard working individuals, feeling good when they ‘failed’. Now watching this years later, I only feel complete and utter happiness for you and I hope you get wherever you aspire to be. I’ve finally accepted my flaws and am working on myself, so thank you for helping me realise that about me. Your videos are wonderful and give me a boost whenever I fall back into procrastination. Can’t wait to see the upcoming videos of Oxford!❤

Oops, I didn't wait until the end of the video. So my academic journey also began with a failure. In high school, I changed my course from bio-chem to humanities because I wanted to become an actress🎭 But I was rejected twice by four drama schools. In the meantime I started theatre studies and in my second year I did an amazing internship in one of the musical theatres. I fell in love with this kind of performance and now I'm in the second year of my PhD, researching original Polish musicals✨
