Years ago when I was 18 I flew to North America for the first time from Prestwick to Halifax, but the plane stopped at Gander - and I think that would have been even shorter. I fell in love with long distance travel that day. Thanks again for your consistently interesting and amusing work.

My first ever flight (in March 1983, when I was 12 years old) was Gatwick to Newark via Gander, where we stopped to refuel the plane. I think it's fair to say that there's not a lot going on in Gander!

What’s more interesting is when you get sucked into the jet stream and end up in London in less than 3.25 hours. What’s even more interesting is when you are on said flight , SUPER DRUNK. Wake up in 3 hours , then throw up in the bathroom clogging the sink . Super interesting
@stankythecat6735
@stankythecat6735 Сағат бұрын
I didn’t have the nerve to admit I had DESTROYED the bathroom. The FA opened the door and had a HORRIFIED look on her face. When we landed at gatwick the jet banked quite steeply and I imagined the sink dumping all over the loo. I was mortified

I love how the low-cost airlines find niche point to point routes and drive traffic. Rather that Canadians in that part of Canada always going to Toronto, Montreal and NYC they might as well fly to London.

Funny enough for a lot of people that live that far in eastern Canada if they want to see a concert, the flights are cheaper to London or Dublin than they were to Toronto or Montreal. Not sure if that’s still the same.

Trans-Atlantic flights are generally quicker heading the other way, flying east with the winds. We did Halifax to Dublin on ASL some years ago, and it was 4 hours and some minutes going east. But the Return leg, west into the wind, was 5 hours and some minutes. These flight durations are conveniently short and very easy flights. Incredible to skip the horrible backtrack to Toronto or Montreal, just incredible.

Similar short flights have existed for quite a while. I've done JFK-GLA as crew, many years ago, in a touch under 5hr with a stiff breeze behind us! Dinner after take off and breakfast a couple of hours later. Quicker than doing a Tenerife at times 😂

I always wondered about these lounges... in particular the food that some of them serve -- is that included as part of the fee that you pay and if so, are they like "buffet" styles where it's all you caneat or do you only get a single plate? I figure that things like alcoholic / mixed drinks would be extra (if they offer them, and as a means to control people from over drinking). My guess is that those seats are the lowest priced seats that can come with a 737-Max8, but probably standard for most Premium Economy classes. The biggest difference is probably the spacing of the seats and perhaps a bit more padding over your standard economy seat. At least you get power outlets. On my recent flight on an A331 Neo all they had were the standard typical USB-A ports in the IFE display (and that was a 9.5 hour flight, but luckily I had my power bank with me). Of course on the way over to Europe, it was an A321 with NO power outlets whatsoever (it was an older plane) but again had my power bank thankfully but I slept most of the way for that flight since it was shorter and an overnight flight arriving at 8am GMT time (or 2am CDT US time). I'm actually surprised they had a "second" meal service on only a 5 hour flight. I would have thought they might come around after say 2 hours, serve one meal, and then you were good for the other 2-3 hours. On a longer flight, they generally do the meal an hour after take off and then the second meal about 2-3 hours before landing. $828 does seem a bit high for basically a Premium Economy flight one-way though. For reference I paid $1100 for my round trip from Chicago to Lisbon on TAPAir in standard economy, direct flight, but perhaps that route is just more (I think on mine, it did break down so that the return flight to Chicago did cost more than the outbound flight, but I also went at the tail end of tourist season so about $550 for the return flight and about $300 for the outbound flight from Chicago with the remaining $200 being taxes and baggage fees and a few small upgrades I got like priority boarding on my flight).
