They’re great guitars after they’re set up and you replace the nuts because Gibson doesn’t know how to cut and file a nut properly(these were older ones before Gibson started using graphtech, idk how those do). But it’s amazing to me that a guitar that is $1,600 - $1,800 new doesn’t have a properly filed nut or is setup right. I love the SG, Les Paul and Explorer. I fucking hate Gibson. And I do not recommend buying any of their shit brand new. If you must have an SG (like me) buy used. You can get them for reasonable prices that way.

@DaveJacobs-f7c3 ай бұрын
Solid advice Glenn because its probably easier to a guitar player to own/play bass parts than find a decent bass player. Most of us are already in 2-3 bands. Bassists, if you bother actually getting good at it, seriously you'll never have trouble finding people to play with once you get known in your scene, especially if you can do lead/backing vocals too. Its worth putting the time and the work in. Don't just spend all your money on pot and tattoos, get decent gear, show up sober to rehearsal, work on your playing, and opportunities will come.
@eriklambert38093 ай бұрын
If you can do vocals and scream/growl etc you can do a lot of studio work too. A lot of bands are put together by labels or through studio work. Falling in Reverse for example. His backup singer will have a job for as long as he wants it. If you know other instruments too, that’s a big perk.
@60degreelobwedge823 ай бұрын
@@DaveJacobs-f7c true...and being a truly great bass player is hard but it's easy to be a good enough bass player. A minimal amount of music theory can compensate for a lack of natural music ability, get decent gig-able gear, learn and practice your parts before you show up and be content with playing a background role if that's all that is needed (always do whats best for the song ie. If the guitar player is soloing, simplify the part and hold down the groove)

*Schecter has been one of the first "off-brands" 20 years ago that were revered for having phenomenal quality while also being a production line guitar factory.* When you actually see their production line, it's like a hybrid between 1 man shop and a factory so the guitars still get significant personal attention. Now, while you reference CNC as the great equalizer, CNC is still many decades old and the real secret to mass scale production of high end guitars is duplicator routers whether operated manually or by an automated system. *I've seen factories with duplicators where the machine was cutting something like 40 bodies at once!* Even manually operated, a duplicator router can produce a body in 10 minutes or less. *Asia gets wood cheaper than we do and yet high quality wood even in the USA is ridiculously cheap based on quantity.* I wanted to be a luthier for a career which is no longer my interest, but I am going to complete the journey and build my first guitar this year from the ground up. *Neck-thru and probably extended scale like 8 to possible even 12 independent string design.*

In defense of bass players, it’s actually extremely difficult to create a part that glues the guitar and drums together. Trying to both play rhythm and melody is actually quite tough… maybe it’s just because our brains are half the size of guitarists though… that could be it
@markospolar15773 ай бұрын
Well, I'd say it really is difficult creating good bass parts, because you have to make sure that both, the rhythm of the drums and melodies of the guitars, are accentuated. So twice the difficultness. However, your average bass player actually only uses half the brain at most, thus can accomplish only 25% of what is required (hence the rule no. 2. :) ). So don't be average. Good luck!

Your piece in the video showing off the podcast mic reminded me to ask.... have you checked out / seen the new Universal Audio Hemisphere mic range? They've extended their Sphere mic modeling tech and applied it to a bunch of workhorse style mics and the prices are VERY reasonable! They have 6 types, and then in software each type can emulate a range of mics based around that particular type. So there's the classic condenser type that can do the traditional U47/67/87 / TLM103 / 251 stuff. There's an SM7 style dynamic that does several other dynamics as well. There's a 421 style dynamic, a kick-drum focused dynamic with several classic offerings, an SM57 style dynamic with several options, and then a pencil condenser pair with several options. Pricing-wise they're incredibly affordable! The SM7 style is $299, the kick-focused one is $150, the SM57 one is $130, and the condenser is the most expensive at $499 (and they have some drum focused bundles). They do NOT require any UA hardware other than the mic, and they come with the plugin to handle the emulations, so they work with pretty much anything. They seemed right up your alley in terms of the kinds of products you like to check out and possibly recommend!

What kills me is that everybody knows bass is the core of the song. So much so, that every metal guitarist in the world now plays a 9-string tuned to drop-Q so they can play "bass" too. But when it comes time to write a bass part, they just tell the bass player to thump on the root of the chord. Now the bass is lost in the wall of mud created by the floppy strings on the guitars and everybody complains bass "doesn't do anything". Pro tip- the purpose of having multiple instruments in an ensemble is so that each instrument can cover the range it's most effective in and so that they can each provide a unique layer to the arrangement. There's a reason orchestras use violins and cellos rather than just adding another string to the violins and tuning them down.
