I Got To Play Roland's 5 New Drumsets: Here Are My First Impressions

Roland just came out with five new drumsets, 3 TD17 modules, a new TD25KVX module, and the TD50KVX. I got a chance to play all of them. This video is a overview of all the new kits with brief playing examples. I'll be doing dedicated videos about the specific drumset later this week :)
Initial thoughts: The TD17 line is great and well priced. The TD25kvx is a bit expensive for the module it has, and the TD50KVX is probably the best all in one kit on the market right now, but it cost as much as a lambo ;)

Awesome video Justin!! I was waiting for your vid on the Roland TD-17KVX!! I ve watched quite a few demo vids on it, and IMO it sounds terrific!! On the down sound, I was also disappointed that Roland was using the same TD-25 module on the new TD-25 KVX. Wished they had "upgraded" the TD-25 module or, as you said in your video, added the TD-30 module to that kit. The TD-25KVX looks amazing but as of now I m more excited about the TD-17KVX!!! Very helpful video as always Justin!!! Ty!!

I'm excited about the TD-17 - I've just started looking at electronic drums and it seems to be exactly what I'm after, at a reasonable price. I want to really take advantage of the different sounds that I can get, so the fact that I can layer sounds, sample my own and make custom drum kits is awesome.

Great intro to the new line. Your subjective comments are really on top of the details!! When you finally get to do the detail breakdown, please include a comment on how portable these sets are -is it hard to break down and setup, will it fit in a car without total breakdown, etc. Also, please give us. a few hits on each drum without playing a rhythm. Thanks Again- keep up the great work! -Patreon supporter.

Nice comparison. The price of the TD-25KPX has shocked me. You can almost get the TD-30K or even the new Pearl set for the same money. Besides, the TD-25KPX does not need stage presence as a module with no individual outputs is not made for the stage. And the price of the 22” kick drum is 1500 according to drum-etc. While the adapter costs only 350. Why should I not buy the adapter and a nice Pearl Bass drum and convert myself? The TD-17KVX is the best new release. I just filtered out everything from 1000-2000$ in terms of e-drum set and nothing can beat the TD-17KVX. This set will be a killer.

Thanks Justin. Another really informative video. Guess when you were out in Roland land you didn't get time to look at their TM-6 pro module. I realise it is marketed for hybrid work. Hope you get time to review one someday - thou guess you are pretty busy! Cheers Chris

I just added the Roland Td 17 module to my Alesis dm8 studio kit w/ a Yamaha top of the line kik tower and a DW 7002 double kik w/Trick drum dead beaters and Tricks cam shaft upgrade. The Td17 module is the best upgrade I've made to my kit it sounds awesome! Didn't really care for the presets but with alil tweaking on the Td17's easy user interface, the decent preset kits I liked just came to life, wow I'm impressed for just alil over 6 bones! But now I'v got to upgrade to some Roland pads & cymbals damn it, used of course but it's gonna look kind of stupid with a Alesis badge on the rack haha!!

The Roland kick pads I’ve tried in stores(not sure of the model) are way more sturdy than other brands. Regardless of the latest models, I’m ditching my Alesis and Simmons kick pads. Might even try the KT10 pedals and not use a pad at all, but I’m skeptical that it will do the trick.

Just traded my TD11K today for the td17kv. I actually found out about this kid on Monday and have been checking your page four times a day until I saw one set up at Guitar Center yesterday. Woke up this morning and brought them my old one and got this one. The only thing that sucks is it doesn't have a regular USB in, which I backed up my 11k drum kits to see if I could transfer them because it took me a long time to make all my custom kits and now I got to start from scratch. Luckily there's way more sounds than the 190 the 11 had

I wasn't a big fan of the electronic drum sets, until I saw my IDOL * ( Neil Peart ) play a set in the studio. OMFG! ! ! They sounded just like the drums that he plays on stage with. Grant you, there were a few more drum pads, and a Roland Sampling Pad.

Play MORE of your chops, you got grooves! Any thoughts about a future vid where you demo several (or more) kit styles, e.g. latin, reggae, dance, marimba, etc on an e-drum? I'm only hearing everyone dial in the standard "rock" sound like those Roland's in this clip. Thanks for flying "us" out with you to Roland HQ.

I played the TD17 KV but when I asked about the layering, the responses was only for internal sounds and not your own and basically it was almost a useless option from the way it was explained to me. I also played the Alesis Strike Pro Kit FINALLY and man the sounds just blew me away. I think it would possibly be a better option as a one drums to buy for life except for the hi-hat which was buggy still (I think even after they've upgraded it but hopefully others had better luck). This is cheaper so that is the better option for price and I guess lasts longer (not sure though)

Thanks for the video. My thoughts: I'm a fan of the TD-17. I think it looks great for the price, especially from Roland. As for the TD-17 and TD-25 modules, I don't mind the cable snakes as much as you seem to. But that's just an opinion of mine. I know a lot of people really don't like them. And I know the downside of them, but its just not a huge deal for me personally. I think that its great that they have a module in the price range that the new TD-17 is in! It seems like quite a robust module for 600 bucks and I think they're going to sell a lot of them because of that. In fact, I'm beginning to build an electronic set now, and am seriously considering that module to use. As for the TD-25kvx and especially the TD-50kvx, they look great but theyre both at a price range where, why not just make your own kit; will be half the price and look even better! So, in short. TD-17 YES! TD-25KVX and 50KVX, cool but, not worth the money.

Great video, Justin. Pleasantly surprised with how Roland have priced the TD-17 line. Probably great value for people who like the Roland sound. Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who absolutely cannot stand Roland's sounds. Even the TD-50 sounds extremely artificial to me. But, like you said, sound is subjective. I'm glad for the people who are looking for a Roland kit at this price point.

I don't think the positional sensing is worth it, the TD17KVX gives you a better kick pad and an extra crash cymbal.

Curious if the VH-10 hi-hat will work with a TD-20, (or any older), module & I also read a rumor that the VH-12 won't work with the TD-17 module. If you could clear up those questions I would appreciate it. Thank you. I enjoy your videos, Justin.

Hopefully you can compare the TD17kvx against the Alesis DM10 MKii Pro. I bought the Alesis last week over the TD11KV because of features that have been added to the TD17. I don't think I'll exchange the Alesis yet, for 1300 it's a helluva solid kit besides the hi hat. Any insight to the pros and cons for both would be great!

great first impressions video Justin. I've been waiting for this from you. I was watching the livestream and saw you recording the Michael Schack demo. lol. So how would you feel about buying the TD17 module (with BlueTooth) and the new Snare pad as upgrades to my TD-10? I love the fact the sound library is from the TD50 line

Glad you liked the video Steve! Yeah those would be nice upgrades to your TD10 kit

Ideally, I would love to go with the TD-50 digital upgrade pack and a KDA-22 conversion, but that's pricey. I think going with the new TD17 Module, the PDX-12 Snare Pad and maybe the KD-180 would be a solidly competitive alternative?

Think u can make a video about what cymbal pads are best to use as a single piece hihat on a mount? I tried using a yamaha PCY135. its ok if u play on top but if u drop your arms to much u hit the edges and the edge of that pad is squishy so you lose rebound. im new to edrums and currently using the new alesis surge mest kit.

I like the 17kvx, nice snare, vh11 hat, new kd. The module sounds good, too bad did not have positional sensing.Do you think that positional sensing is gimmick or not? Anyways I am ordering 17kvx.

Nice vid Justin!! The TD17-KVX is definitely well priced for what you get and is within reach for a lot of people price wise, which I’m happy to see coming from Roland. Personally I would probably just buy the module though. I think the Toms could have been a bit larger and while its great to see a larger snare on a mid-level kit, in every video I’ve seen it just looks flimsy and wobbles around too much for my liking. The TD25-KVX upgrade is just a complete waste of money if you ask me. Better off sticking with the TD25-KV for half the price and buying the V Expressions or Drumtec kit upgrade packs for the module.

I agree completley on the 25kvx. It should have gotten something, maybe td50 sounds like the 17. Or a td 30 module. They missed the boat i think.

The high end TD50 is for drummers who make drumming their life, not just rich people. High end bicycles & golf clubs are really expensive too, as are many things. I see a lot of drummers saying they live & breathe drums but won’t make Drums their priority & wont spend $8k on Drums & will spend $30k on a car or sports truck. Drumming to me is my job, my passion, my lifetime commitment.. i never had money growing up so I had to work hard at crap jobs. So many drummers put price first.. I remember that I wanted a dw drum kit, took me so long to save up that the price changed a few times. Not the point because that’s what I wanted, not settle for an ok pdp instead.. I still have the dw & love it. Are you a hobby drummer or is drumming your life & you say you live & breathe Drums? That’s up to you to you & your priority & commitment..

Hi Justin. I hope all is well. Thanks for sharing your impressions. I watched the event live in KZbin, and have watched a bunch of retail demos of the TD-17 lineup. I found myself pretty disappointed that my TD-25 module can't assign sounds to the tom rims, but the TD-17 can. Overall it seems like the TD -17 has more features than the TD-25 module, but at a lower price tag. Would you consider the TD-17 an upgrade to the TD -25 module? A downgrade? Or just different but somehow equal? Do you think adding new features (like tom rim sounds) to the TD-25 through a firmware update is even a possibility? Or is the TD -25 now considered "legacy" hardware?

Bt I loved The TD 30K drum kit most... Bt it's too expensive in India..... Even I want to add & use too many cymbals in it... So what's ur review regarding this matter???? Btw one more question What is your review regarding Alesis STRIKE PRO KIT????

I’m new to the ekit possibilities. I have an acoustic set and I want add Roland triggers . I want the TD-17 module and midi it to my laptop with ezdrummer. I saw it on KZbin and was blown away. Do I need the the Yamaha mixer I’m buying to mic my kit or can I plug directly into speakers? Direct box also when not using the mixer ? Thanks very much, Greg
