This is the high-end version of the new Roland TD17 line. The TD17KVX. The big difference between the TD17KV and the KVX version of the kit is the cymbals. This kit has the 3 zone CY13R ride cymbal, two CY12C crashes, and the brand new VH10 hi-hat. That hi-hat is actually one of the best things about his kit. It feels practically identical to the VH11 but is a few ounces lighter. As an overall package this drumset is better than any other kit near it in price. It's even better than the more expensive TD25k and the Alesis Strike in my opinion.

I just bought a TD17 kvx and I’m in heaven. I’m pretty much like a young kid getting ready for Halloween. It’s my first E kit after playing acoustic kits for decades. I currently play a DW Collectors 5 piece. This Roland kit is so freaking wonderful and mostly I just LOVE how I can literally play anytime without bothering anyone. Thx for your video. It helped me make the purchase 😊

Thanks Justin! I've been watching your reviews for a year now, waiting, researching, watching videos and I literally had a TD25 in my shopping cart, ready to pull the trigger. Then you dropped the ATV video which mentioned that Roland was getting ready to introduce their new line, so I waited, and as soon as you reviewed the TD17kvx, I bought it. I LOVE IT! Thanks for your great reviews, knowledge and info!

I've yet to hear a snare rimshot. For example, what does the Maple SR sound like when assigned to the rim? Can you do this? I don't know why nobody is demonstrating this. I still use rimshot sounds on my TD-9 and am thinking of upgrading to this kit but I'd like to see the snare rimshot. I tried messing around with it today at GC but the "SR" didn't sound right.

Your review put me over the top to get the Roland 17KVX. I have had it now about 10 months and it's incredible. I haven't even scratched the surface of all the sound adjustments. Tweaked the acoustic sound a little and have been happy since. I am looking at potentially adding another cymbal with the extra input.

I played the Strike in a music shop, and I was so close to buying it, but I've gone for this instead due to the breaking issues. I am fully satisfied with this. I'm what you'd call a hobbyist, I am not going to be releasing records for sale or playing live... and this is absolutely what I want in a kit. Works perfect out of the box, expandable with an extra pad, way better than my 10 year old Yamaha DTXplorer. For years I wanted more pads, the ability to split, the ability to choke, and a more quiet kit (achieved via the mesh heads) I've been enjoying the bluetooth and playing along to songs, and the cymbals feel more easily chokeable than the strike and more sensitive out of the box. Also, no issues with the hats. The strike in the music shop hadn't had the updates or been dialed in though... but like I say, for the kind of person who would prefer it perfect out of the box, the KVX suits me just fine. Shame the strike is so large and so beautiful, it is damn tempting, but man I'd just be terrified of breaking something that expensive. On the plus sides for this as well, no load times at all. It is instant.

Hey Justin; great review, thank you for showing how the hi hat sounds, gradually opening and closing. Haven't seen that demonstrated yet until now on the td17. Also I love the fact that their layering now, ( that used to be called velocity switching ), but what got my attention about Roland a few years back was that positional sensing on the snare drum, which sounded very musical compared to most electronic drums, so I guess there's always a trade-off. And I think all the cymbals need bells, Which would make it a better midi controller I think. One other thing about the sound of Roland drums is that there isn't enough pitch bend from velocity. But overall better bang for buck, and that we can almost afford them now. These are my humble thoughts. Thanks for asking

I really wanted an E-kit and did not feel like getting the top tier Roland’s so I got these TD-17KVXs and I absolutely love them. There is a lot that you can do with them, and they are a ton of fun to play on because you can literally play anything that’s a drum on them. The pads are very responsive, the CY-12C cymbal pads feel nice and weighty and it just plays very nicely. The pros far outweigh the cons which were covered well here.

I just got a chance to sit down and play this drum set at my local Sam Ash. I don't know how I missed this drum set, but maybe I just overlooked it, but I played it and WOW!!!! I was so impressed with the drum sounds. The first set I played blew me away; the snare sound, the TOMS!!!, and the cymbals all hit the right balance (IMHO). Now, I've been pretty peeved at Roland over the years, for what I felt were only incremental improvements of their sounds, and as you states, that's very subjective, but I'd just like to say, I applaud Roland for the TD17 endeavor as far as the sounds included on the module; well done Roland. Also, I want to thank all of Roland's competitors...because without you, it might have been another 10 years before Roland started making me happy again. LOL!

Thanks for putting the comparison between the 3. Wasn't expecting this in this video so maybe add it to the title for more views :) I'm like you wanted reliable equipment and maybe I can get the sounds of the Strike Pro sampled from someone in the future or make my own then I'm just missing that nice drum presence only that you get with the strike but for my case, I prefer stability overall and this is like $1000 cheaper too for me in Canada which is a big difference in price.

The TD 17KVX is a solid kit at a price point I can accept. I had a used Alesis kit for a month and the cymbals would cut out. It wasn't a good experience for me as I am new to edrums, played acoustic for years. After I returned the Alesis DM10 Mesh kit, I had no idea what new kit I wanted to buy. The Roland models that seemed attractive to me were 2,000 bucks or more and I want to spend around 1,000 to 2,000. At 1,600 dollars for the TD 17KVX, its a solid kit at a price point I can certainly accept. Bluetooth capability and that 12 inch snare is quite impressive. I just wish Roland would compete with Alesis and make larger toms but maybe that will happen in a year or two. I am thinking I will be getting this model. I appreciate this channel, it has helped me understand edrums since I have never shown any interest for them in the past. Keep up the good work!

I kinda agree, but at the same time, I kinda don't. Like, the durability issues is a problem I know. But I would PROBLABLY take the Alesis strike pro over the td-17kvx. Just because I don't like the sizes and sound. (Exept for the snare).

This might be a dumb question but are electronic kits better than Acoustic kits in your opinion? Can anyone weigh in on this. I'm a pretty strong drummer and have been playing for quite a while. I have only played on Acoustic sets my entire life and I know for $1000 I can get a very nice Yamaha acoustic set and then buy cymbals and come out around the same price as this td-17KVX. My biggest concern is durability. With acoustic sets you can just replace heads in 20 minutes for a very inexpensive price and be done. I've never broken anything significant on an Acoustic kit in my life. The one big downside is my neighbors wanting to kill me due to the noise. Apartments are horrible for Acoustic drums. Thanks in advance for anybody's opinion.

Roger U I’m hardly an expert, but personally I would always choose an acoustic kit over electronic kit. The only reason to get an electric kit (for me) is because it allows me to practice as much as I want without having to worry about noise complaints and shit.

I was going to go for the KV but I think I’ve been convinced to go for the KVX! I’ve seen a lot of reviews where people say the moving hi hat is a game changer and the extra cymbal is a bonus for me as well! Honestly, if Alesis didn’t have durability issues, I’d buy one of their mesh kits because they look absolutely amazing. There’s a song I love to play on my Alesis DM6, but it sounds absolutely awful because of all the issues, and now the kick drum wires have come loose yet again 😂 I can’t wait to play it on a better kit!

So I only play last 4 hours (non stop, yes I love that kit already). The hi-hat is really cool, snare is great too. Sound module I haven't explored it (that) much, but sound is good, and it got bluetooth, and good settings options for the pads The only downside is the ride bell I do agree. Not THAT satisfying but still pretty much ok. According to me, probably the best kit for it's price ! Never thought I could get that for less than 1700$

I bought the TD-17 KVX set as soon as it was available, and I absolutely love it. This is my 4th set of Roland TD's, my last being a TD-30-KV set which I ended up selling, in favor of reverting to my high ended acoustic set to both practice and play out. The new HH is excellent! And Roland has finally addresses the "clapping cupped hands" noise (ALLELUIA!) I used to get with my VH-13 on my previous set. The down sides? 1) I've had to increase a lot of the instrument volumes. 2) It has a limited number of inputs, but then again, that's something I have factored in when I bought it. 3) It's far more limited in editing capabilities than my TD-30 - however you can still do a lot with what you have. Yet the capabilities for editing are TD-50 based, and you can tell it. 4) There are no quality custom kits available yet to load into the upper 50 memory slots, such as you would purchase from outfits like "V-Expression" (VEX Kits). BOTTOM LINE: It's a nice quality and seems to fill that much coveted "Value/Price Point" quite nicely. I LOVE THEM!

I recently (2 months ago) purchased the TD-17kvx. I used to work in a music store part time and was always impressed that with all of the “shenanigans” that our demo kits were dealt the Roland TD kits always worked. The pads never broke. That’s why I went with the Roland kit. The sounds in the module are acceptable. I HATE the rack that comes with it. It is ergonomically impossible. I used the parts and built my own rack with 1.5 inch aluminum rigid conduit that I had powder coated. Around $200 total cost. I MIDI the module to my laptop running Steven Slate 5 and now I have everything I want. I’ve played gigs with that setup and everyone comments on how great it sounds. Not “why electronic?” It sounds awesome, and I can fit it in my Volkswagen Golf. Can’t go wrong.

I own this drum set and really like it. This review is VERY accurate. Overall, I would buy this again. I find the hi hat and ride to not be as sensitive as I would like. Additionally, I have tried splitting off a rim trigger to use for an additional cymbal and/or trigger pad as mentioned in this video and have not had any success. As a workaround for both of these issues, when I play live, I use an acoustic hi hat and ride to free up triggers for other things. It works well and people are surprised how well it all blends. Just an FYI to anyone thinking of buying this or any e drums.

Thank you for this deep dive. I have been researching which electronic kit to buy and I believe this kit offers the most value for what I am looking for right now. It was a toss up between this, the Alesis Command mesh and Surge mesh and a Yamaha kit. This looks like the best option for me. Thank you, the information you provided helped me make the final chooice.

When I first saw these kits announced my first thought was "I should replace my snare and floor Tom on my td4 with those 12" pads and use my current 8" mesh snare pad as the hightom" but then I started looking at the vh10 too and that's pretty tempting, and then the 3 zone ride... By the time I buy all of those I'd be only like £100-200 away from a brand new kit, and you've just sold me on it. I use kontact over midi for sounds so the module itself isn't super important to me, but that kind of upgrade for only a little more than I'd be spending anyway, seems silly not to.

Thanks so much for the detailed overview and your thoughts! Have you played the TD12 much, and how would an old midrange module like that one (I used to own it, and kind of regret getting rid of it) compare to the the sounds of the TD17? I'm trying to decide between an old used TD12, or a new TD17KVX. There's also a TD12 kit with a TD20 module that I've seen listed used locally.

Hi, I just bought a TD-17 KVX this is my first e-drum kit and I am in love with it. Are you using the PM-100 or the PM-200? Can you make a review about these two monitors? The difference between them, etc... Tks and congrats for the channel.

Love your videos! Thanks for this review. Have a question, I hope you can recommend something. I have a Roland TD-11K and it would be great to upgrade to TD-17KVX at some point. Do you think I can replace the parts step by step? You know, when I have some money. Do you have a recommended upgrade path? Thanks in advance!

I've been watching your various videos as I decide what direction I want to go in upgrading / replacing my old electronic drums. (I say "old", but they are all new items that I bought years ago on closeout, but wound up putting in storage and haven't used yet: Roland TD-3 brain, PDX-8 pad, PD-9 pad, KD-8 pad, 4 x Pintech Concertcast pads, Zildjian Gen 16 version 1 set with pickups and module (13", 14", 18"), added 16" crash, 4 newer pickups, and just received 20" BB ride). I'm currently trying to find time to finish setting it up while still on vacation (if my wife will ever stop assigning Honey-dos.) :-) . I've thought about replacing the TM-3 with the TD-17 brain, and then later changing out the pads or adding triggers to one of my acoustic sets. Too bad Roland doesn't have an option that you can buy one of their kits without the drum module. For grins, I added up what all the drum and cymbal pads would cost new if I bought them separately from a store like Sweetwater. Not including mounts and cables (except for the PDX-8 pads since you can buy them together), it will cost me $1000 more to buy everything separate than to buy the whole kit as a unit! So my first step is to set up and try out what I already have, then decide what direction to go also based on what comes out in the upcoming 2020 NAMM show.

Only became aware of the TD17 today. I've had a TD6 for about 14 years. I've looked at every new kit Roland have released for several years now, but any that were in my price range didn't offer the hardware upgrade I was after, and the kits with the hardware I lusted after were just too expensive for me to justify as just a hobbyist player, hence I just stopped looking. It seems with the TD17, I finally have the option of hardware that represents a serious upgrade from the PD8/80 and CY8/5 that I'm used to, but for a price that I can live with. That the TD17 module has around a third of the instrument sounds the TD6 has is initially a bit off putting, but then the sounds on the 17 are much more customisable. Plus, of course, there is the option of importing more samples (though no review I've seen yet gives much info on that feature). Positional sensing on the snare would be nice. Bizarrely, the hot-spotting on the PD80 through the TD6 does give an impression of positional sensing which I use a lot. However, the PDX12 is probably much more sensitive and the VH10 is going to be SO much more expressive, as are the other cymbal pads, I reckon I'd be ok. I think I'll be calling in at my local store to check out the TD17 for myself tomorrow. Great review (and I've watched several this evening) so thanks for that.

Question for you Justin. Roland TD12 KV or the Roland TD-17 KVX. Our church is using the older TD-12 but it now is starting to fall apart. Need new VH-11, KD-85 and the TD-12 has issues, mix in jack and headphone jack non functional, and there may be more issues. Anyway, Does the TD-17 offer interval control like the TD-12? The TD-12 for its age worked well for us, I spent many hours tweeking it for out PA system. But recently a factory reset was done and wiped out my custom kits. In your opinion, should we just get the TD-12 fixed out get a new TD-17 module, hi hat, and KD-10 and use out existing pads? Whats your thought on this. My pastor has given me a $1500 budget. Thanks.

I just got this kit this past week. Really great. I upgraded from a Yamaha DTX version 2 from 2000. Well worth it. I also got a great bundled price from Kraft Music. And no I don't work for them. They include a hi-hat, drum kick, and throne for the price of the kit itself. Great for me as I didn't have the hi-hat.

Also thanks Justin I watched all your videos on comparisons for kits and glad I didn't waste money on an Alesis. Was going for the TD25KVX but like you was not impressed with the limited amount of kits. I knew Roland was probably going to come out with something new as the TD25 was now 3 years old. Glad I waited as I could buy this new for less than getting the TD25 used.

Great review. Really enjoying your channel. I have an old TD4 that I am using and was thinking of finally upgrading. I am curious your thoughts on buying another electric kit like the td17kvx or going the acoustic route and using some mesh pads to quote it down for neighbors sake. Do you fell the td17 does a good job of replicating an acoustic set?

Justin, I have never seen you discuss how setup friendly these kits are in terms of positioning the pads and pedals. In every video I have seen about the new TD17 the player, pads and pedals seem to be in some "skewed" uncomfortable looking position in relation to each other. The 25s rack and holders design, compared to the 17's for instance, seems to have more space and flexibility as regards this issue, if it is one. If you have a choice, no matter how much money you might save buying one kit instead of another, it might not be well spent, IMHO, if you cannot get naturally comfortable behind it. And too, positioning flexibility also matters if you are trying to "mimic" (as best you can) your acoustic setup. Maybe something you could include in your reviews or talk about separately sometime. Great series on the 17s. Thanks for all the work.

Great review! I played drums in the 80's/90's and a few years ago I was just REALLY missing it and built up a decent 7-piece acoustic kit with several great cymbals. Then I got a cat about 2 years ago and my drums just scare the living crap out of him, so I really haven't played/practiced since. Started looking at electronic kits this morning am realizing I CAN "have my cake and eat it too". Have researched a lot of kits so far, but between Nick D'Virgilio's comprehensive video demo for Sweetwater and your excellent review, the TD-17KVX is solidly at the top of my list so far. Thanks for taking the time to do this review! Much appreciated.

I have a td6 at the moment. Looking to upgrade I been using hybrid setup with roland triggers at the moment but, cant fully dial them in so its no 100% with meshhead except for the kid. Kick im using a normal head packed full of pillows Triggerings OK. I have a cy15 ride and everything else is crap. You think its worth just getting the 17kvx or would the new module make my roland triggers work better and maybe stick with the hybrid setup and get a vh-10 hi hat?

Hi Justin, Thank you very much for a great review. Can you confirm then that, in your opinion, you think that the 17KVX is worth the extra money over the 17KV (not the -L, the other one with Bluetooth) because of the better symbols, and despite the fact that you have to have your own hi-hat stand and base drum pedal? In a few of the stores I've looked at, you've also had to buy the rack separately as well, is that unusual? Also, does the hi-hat work with any hi-hat stand? I'll be sure to go and test the kits out for myself as well, but if the answer is yes the 17KVX is worth it, I think I'll be saving a bit more and going for it. I plan to have the kit for a long time, and it will be a MASSIVE improvement on my Alesis dm10... Thanks for your help! Cheers, Ryan
