I am 53 years old. I was 10 when Adventure came out for the Atari. My best friend at the time, Mark O'Neill, had a 2600 and the Adventure cartridge. Somehow he found out about the Easter Egg, and told me about it, and we spent about a week looking for it, until we finally found it. This movie made me so happy and so sad at the same time. My friend Mark passed away several years ago. I wish he were here to see the Easter Egg as a major plot point in a movie so many years later. RIP, Mark.

Yeah, the movie is fun, but they already had the perfect story. They just needed to make it true to the book and it would have been a crazy good movie. Even just the small decisions just don't seem well thought out, like the whole reason wade was able to complete the first challenge as a broke kid, was that halliday put the tomb of horrors on ludus because he wanted a poor schoolkid to win. Having it be a race that everyone already knows the location of just defeats the whole point and makes it less interesting.

I said this before Warner Bros did what they do, I'll say it here too. That "spell" is the "Charm of Making" from the movie Excalibur (1978, I think). It's one of those little details people miss. Also, Samantha's birthmark... To me, it looks like Kratos' facial tattoo, only on the other side. "Holy shit, that guy's riding a large bird" That could be one of two things. Cloud riding a Chocobo, or a throwback to an old video game called "Joust". You rode a large bird, carried a lance, and tried to knock other people (no internet, bots) off their birds.

Both mention Warren Robinett as the creator of the first easter egg in video games when he hid his name in Adventure. This was after Joust released. Vin Diesel did before all of that fame the Iron Giant voice acting in same sort of manner as he did Groot years later. Still, the Iron Giant doing Terminator's thumb up is one of the greatest movie easter eggs of all time.

Born in 1970, I could relate to EVERYTHING in this movie. But I read the book afterwards, and have to say that it was even better. Or, let's say, different. Because the movie had little to do with the book storyline nor with the puzzles and easter eggs presented. The characters were the same, the premise was the same, but that's pretty much it. This was MUCH more video gamer framed, whereas the book was much more cerebral and laced with a lot more pen & paper roleplay tropes. I could relate to anything, outing myself as a 1980's geek AND nerd, both from the book and the movie. Both were great entertainment, if you could accept that neither was related anywhere closely to the other.

People's biggest gripe with this film when it came out, was that it was essentially every pop culture reference from the last 50 years thrown in a blender, and this movie was the result. And the over abundance of CGI.

I totally get you. I can accept some changes like how the keys are found, since it's cool for book readers to have something new. You can't also reproduce all the references and cool scenes, and even on this point he movie did great. I still would have liked the first riddle to be kept like in the book, one made to be available for everyone, even people who couldn't leave the school planet. What left a bad taste in my mouth was the ending. I mean, you're going to ban the use of the game two days a week? Have you forgotten why you even started playing it? The world didn't stop being a shitty place just because you found a girlfriend. What about the other people living in slums and being beaten by their relatives? The book felt more grounded, I even got shaken when I read the part where Wade's new financial status affected his health.

This movie was a blast. Just a regular ol' adventure. Kinda reminded me of "Arthur et les minimoys", a lot of parallels between live-action and CGI, mostly generic plot, but so much heart. It didn't have to go deep on psychology or anything, just tons of references and impressive visuals.
