At some point I'd love to hear his thoughts on one of the most interesting rules argument from older Yu-Gi-Oh regarding Apprentice Magician, it's summon, and the original version of fires of doomsday. I'll straight up tell you that's one of the most interesting rules questions ever. Because it actually involves how special summons work, resolution of it and how cards should be checked when stuff is special summoned. Gotta say I actually had a head judge at an old SJC around the time that syncros came out legitimately argue that Apprentice magician is summoned face up then as part of it's resolution of being summoned flipped face down instead of the exact wording on the card saying it's brought to the field face down and then checked. It actually matters on things with that specific interaction and is a great example of why fires of doomsday now specifically has the words "normal set" as far as what you're still allowed to do. (As the player in that apprentice is summoned face down it doesn't get to check to see if it's summoned so there's no time for it to check for an opportunity to activate it's on summon effect. However them ruling it's brought face up and flipped face down as part of the resolution means it has an opportunity. Oddly enough it actually matters with a card like Fires because of the restriction it gives.). you can argue whether or not it works or not but it's s great example of how things. And as someone who played using Apprentice magician for years you better believe I know weather or not I'm getting that counter and ruling it's brought face up means it gets the chance to check and ruling it's brought out face down it doesn't. So yeah knowing when not only someone is ruling incorrectly and is saying your appeal is incorrect you better believe I'm making sure I get my counter if you're ruling that the face down part happens last and it was face up at any part of the summon to where it would get a chance to check.

I believe it's because only cards that directly alter attack or defense can activate during the Damage Step (unless otherwise stated).

The exact ruling is something along the lines that cards that negate ACTIVATIONS specifically can be used during the damage step. Such as Evolzar Dolkka, Invoked Mechaba, Ghost Belle. Ash negates the card’s effect only so it can’t be used in the damage step

Hi Distant Coder I have a question regarding a situation between "Solemn Strike" and "Red-Eyes Fusion" I set solemn strike and pass turn. On opponents turn they activate red eyes fusion and summon dragoon of red eyes but for some reason I am not allowed to use the strike to negate the summon. I am not sure why I can't negate the summon of dragoon but I know that I can try to negate its effect.

Basically, it creates a chain, and the dragoon is summoned during a chain resolving, meaning you cant activate stuff in response to its summon. But you can Solemn the effect that would summon it, as when the effect activates, it starts a chain, so you can solemn the fusion spell

Solemn Strike can't negate Red-Eyes Fusion as well as any non-monster effects that summons a monster. Use Solemn Warning if ya want to negate the Red-Eyes Fusion

Using solemn strike to try to negate a red eyes fusion is like trying to negate a drytron nova. Both cards summon their monsters as part of a chain resolving and as you know, while a chain is resolving, no cards can be activated.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I think that people feel that way because A) it’s same-y and rewards a very easy play in normal-summon-Aleister, B) everyone has seen it splashed to death in other decks (any deck that didn’t need their normal summon had the option to splash invoked) and C) on top of the above, it’s immensely recursive, so if you see it once, you’ll be seeing it almost every turn until they’re out of targets.
