This is really awesome. I've been a big fan of yours for over a year now and always reference your videos when someone asks me about monitor related stuff. You make some incredibly in depth and detailed reviews and other content that I know myself and others really appreciate. I've learned a lot from your videos and as a fellow CRT head (which unfortunately all my CRTs need fixing) I am completely in the same boat as you about waiting or wanting a monitor technology that truly surpasses CRTs lol. Obviously some of them have come close or even better in some ways but it still sucks that even the best 240hz panels and 360hz models all feel significantly worse than a 160hz CRT (or in my case, 200hz) For what it's worth, I will be buying the game (even if I don't know if I'll play it) and I would absolutely try to support you through Patreon should you open one up. I understand that from a business perspective, sending monitors to someone who is actually very in depth and critical isn't really great, but if they were to listen to feedback it would be cool. Obviously from a consumer standpoint it's incredible. Thanks for all your good work and I hope to see you making monitor reviews soon.

Thank you! I might do the Patreon thing, but I seriously feel bad about asking for support without giving something of value right back. Strobing has been neglected recently, but there have been improvements in LCD tech. ASUS's new PG27AQN seems like it has pretty incredible response times, and as refresh rates keep getting higher and higher, sample and hold times start coming down as well. But it's still pretty shocking to play something on a CRT if you're used to LCDs... you no longer have to kind of defocus your eyes while you're turning the camera.

Just a suggestion but, you don't need to buy monitors to make content, you could simply discuss display news, makes vids about things like motion blur/BFI, how to eliminate it, why it's even happening etc, those are sorely needed because most people don't even realize why their monitor is so blurry, much less know about the way to fix this with strobing. Your video about lag was also excellent, and I'm sure there's plenty more similar stuff you can make videos about. Like gushing about CRTs again, go in depth about why they look and feel the way they do, etc. You have an unique perspective on this sort of stuff and I think that's valuable. It is to me, anyway.

As a competitive TF2 player and long time viewer, a game based around movement mechanics is an insta-buy for me. Please throw up a Patreon, your technical and straightforward videos are worth funding 10x over. Not many people can claim they helped two major reviewers like Hardware Unboxed and rtings improve their testing methodology. Also, it wouldn't hurt to reach out to some retailers to see if temporary review samples are on the table. Worst they can do is say no, best case they say yes and you throw up some referral links.

bought your game on sunday to support you, i havent played it jet but wanted to support you in a way, i remember your viewsonic XG270 review which in my opinion, beyond its helpfull technical info you provided, i also found it quite honest, transparent review. something that is rare to find on today many biased, businees oriented rather than educational - trasnparenlty informative oriented product reviews. i have read from some other comments from you that you have been trying to get a sample of the XG2431 from viewsonic to review it, and have been denieded to get it, i am not surprised why this viewsonic negative manner againts you: sure they got afraid of you with your honest, transparent XG270 review which is an inconvenient truth for their business tactics, so sure you just need to become a sellout as many others, tell viewsonic you will hide XG2431 flaws, specialy against CRT monitors from the public, bash and missinform about CRT monitors to the public and that way sure you will get your sample from viewsonic.

Your monitor reviews are amazing indeed. I have posted this previously, but I am using the Legion Y27-20 because of you and am highly satisfied with it. I also understand that you are part of the reason Hardware Unboxed evolved their monitor reviews in the direction they have? If so, your influence on Techtube has been much larger than the size of your channel would indicate. I would dare to compare it to what RocketJumpNinja has done for mouse reviews, only that monitors are much more technically advanced for obvious reasons. Anyway, it sounds like you have a problem that leads to you not being able to do a fulltime job (maybe a psychological one, seeing as I cannot see it being related to hard skills, obviously you are more than able to code and your engineering knowledge seems up there, too). I am sorry that is the case and I really hope our supports gets you on top of that KZbin game eventually. I am not a Quake player whatsoever, but I will purchase your game simply to see some more reviews of yours. Put a few of them up and I am optimistic about many more people subscribing. I don't have three years of experience coding, I've never worked in engineering, so no experience there. Never worked in product design or technical marketing. My B.S. is in pure mathematics, which seems to be completely useless. First job I got after I finished my degree was stocking shelves overnight at a grocery store. I'd love to keep doing the KZbin thing with monitor reviews, but I'm also hoping that Jump Dash Soar will help fill out my job hunting portfolio =)

Quake-boyo and misanthrope here! I subscribed to your channel some years ago when I put a new rig together and wanted to see what monitor I should buy. Your videos are so much better, especially in relation to the mainstream stuff out there, man. When you said that you do not make much money from that, I felt that. I know exactly what you mean. It may sound a bit cryptic, but quality is not what lets the world go round, convenience driven cogs are, mainly because there are to many of them. As long as you do not succumb to marketing, halftruthing in favor of complexity-reduction or superficiality, there is nothing wrong to push the right buttons. Of course it is always a path on the edge of corrupting one-self's ideals. Nevertheless, your game is as good as bought. Btw. I still don't have a new monitor, cause I wanted to buy one together with a new gpu and the gpu prices were so idiotic that I did not even thought about buying them, even though I had the money. Back then I was interested in a XG270, as I wanted a monitor to play at around 144hz with the option to either use an adaptive sync tech or a good backlight strobing. I think the market did not get much better in terms of the ladder, am I correct?. And now when prices begin to normalize even EVGA went out of GPU business - god damn I'm so damn pissed about all that shit. I hope you will be able to find your niche and do some good stuff, maybe you could find some other dude that is into shit and you make some collaboration. You need to look out for single people like RJN, Buildzoid, Chris from Battle(non)sense and such calibers. If I think about it, Tim from HWU was also kind of nerdy back then, so they "weeded out" some of his content from HWU into monitors unboxed. Maybe that is a door you could poke, so long you make sure that your methods and content stay within your control. All you need is a hook in order to be recognized by the algorithms once and then you need a good concept. Just think about the fact how many players DO NOT play above 60hz and don't know the difference of a real smooth gaming experience. I bet there are even people out there buying adaptive sync and a X hz Monitor without utilizing it. These people will rather play on 4k instead of realizing that gaming at 60hz sucks, especially if you have no other option like backlight strobing. I bet with enough editing-skills and a collab this could be a way to reach a broad audience.
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille Жыл бұрын
Thank you! When I started the channel, I was trying to avoid all the clickbait, like and subscribe stuff that's completely taken over KZbin, but outside of making me feel a little better, it only really hurt the channel. Lesson learned. I think I can keep the quality of the videos up but also make people interested in clicking on them in the first place. I hear you on the GPU side. I was expecting that with mining no longer profitable, we’d be seeing a ton of very cheap graphics cards hitting the used market, but that really hasn’t happened. You can still get a pretty good deal on a used 3060 Ti for around $300, but I was hoping for more. There’s a guy on reddit, RxBrad, that goes into detail about all the lost mining hashrate: www.reddit.com/r/EtherMining/comments/yspj5i/where_have_eth_miner_gone_8_weeks_after_the_merge/ They seem to be mostly holding onto them, which is bad for us. Other than the ViewSonic XG2431, backlight strobing has really been neglected, especially this last year. The KSF phosphor issue and a general lack of interest in strobing means that manufacturers almost have an incentive not to include it at all. I may be pessimistic, but I very much doubt we’re going to get any real effort put into strobing in the next few years. I see LCDs getting higher and higher refresh rates, which will definitely help. A 500 Hz monitor “only” has 2 ms of persistence blur, but that’s at least four times higher than a CRT. Maybe with AI framerate generation, these super high framerates will get us close enough to CRT clarity.
@yosoy1loco
@yosoy1loco Жыл бұрын
@@ApertureGrille That is depressing to hear I wanted a 27 inch monitor, for that reason I did not put much attention to the XG 2431. Getting higher refreshrates instead of a sophisticated kind of backlight strobing may help with specific games, but overall you cannot play a lot of games in such high fps. It would be much cooler if they found a way to get adaptive sync tech and backlight strobing working at the same time like around 120hz. I feel that would be a much more satisfying experience than pumping fps into oblivion. I only know of one Asus monitor trying to do that, but in a bad way. Seems like we need to adapt :(( Maybe you can do a collabo with some fancyschmancy fitnessyoutuber and film how you mug some gpu-scalpers. That way you solve two problems: get a new card and a ton of views. Cheers.

Nice! I can't believe Philips still has a product page up for that. Is the spec page correct? What refresh can you do at 1600x1200?
@Italian_Isaac_Clarke
@Italian_Isaac_Clarke Жыл бұрын
@@ApertureGrille The normal max resolution is 1600x1200 @ 85hz. I basically never select that for many reasons, among which the longevity of the monitor. I play games at 1280x1024 @ 85hz on it. 1200p may as well be higher, but stuff still doesn't look pixel-sharp, not that different from 1024p. I take advantage of the lower resolution and CRT look to play RTX games, like the last Metro (I had to go low on my 1440p 144hz monitor with the resolution because I have a RTX 2070, the CRT instead let me keep the game almost to the max all the time and still hit 85 FPS most of the time). Now: the screen protection has been scratched up by the old owner, but you can't notice it during normal use, and you can see the metal mask used to make the picture sharper because on single-color tests you can see 2 thin shadow-lines separating the monitor in 3. Through my tests I managed to find out that the monitor can hit an absolute max of 110hz at very low resolutions (like, not over 600p? I can't remember that) while everything above will go no further than 100hz, hitting an hard stop when tl;dr the tube can't go that high with high resolutions. I am using the monitor right now at 480p just to amuse myself and LET ME TELL YOU using Windows 10 at 480p is CRAMPED AS HELL XD As a closure I want to say this: I first got a 710 years ago to use its VGA port. It worked really well, native, no problems. October 2021 GPUs up to the 900 family where dropped, so the 710 stopped working. DVI-D to VGA works well enough, but higher resolutions (1600x1200) give artifacts if you don't lower the hz because of the bottleneck that's the converter (green halos form around stuff). I tried a HDMI to VGA, but I swear that it was the worst adaptor ever. It just didn't work well at all. Now I have a DP to VGA. It's perfect! If I'm not wrong it fixed the halo thing and ALSO it's easier to plug and unplug, making the task a walk in the park when Windows (and the Nvidia software) recognize it as "Generic pnp". >>Now instead of having to unscrew the DVI-D, unplug it and hope that when I make contact again it doesn't make the life-saver (electricity stuff) trip I just have to use the Display Port and it's done in seconds! To be honest tho, my first advice to anyone wanting to get a CRT is: don't. I have 2 and I am a nut for stuff like this, but I am not blind to their shortcomings. You can afford to have such novelty items just if you have the space, threat them well and have enough knowledge about their upkeep.
@ApertureGrille
@ApertureGrille Жыл бұрын
@@Italian_Isaac_Clarke I agree on the sharpness thing. I think I talked about that in my CRT video, but due to the electronics and the aperture grille, you don't really gain any sharpness from increasing resolution. You do get a nice anti-aliasing effect, but sharpness stops improving at 1280x960. Oh, yeah! The damping wires! Unfortunately, they're necessary for Trinitrons, but you can train your brain/eyes to ignore them after a while. Speaking of cramped: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqbYXpyvidiNqsk That's 640x480, and yes, it's a little hard to navigate in Windows. I get you! On the adapters, I like to check the HardForum FW900 thread to see what's working. Some of the cheaper ones show the green artifacting when pushing too far, but others can do 360 MHz, which is pretty close to what you'd get from analog out from a 980 Ti.

What engine are you working with? Quake's strafe jumping is pretty complex; the optimal camera angle changes depending on how fast you're moving, and it's pretty hard for new players to learn. JDS uses a much simpler strafe jumping algorithm: as long as you're rotating the camera at 60 degrees per second while strafing, you'll build speed while in the air. That's easier for me to code, and also easier to learn (I hope!). But it was pretty hard to get it all working properly. The code for strafing, dashing, and jumping is pretty complex and was some of the most challenging stuff I did, but it paled in comparison to getting rebindable keys working :)
