Went there a few (10+) years ago with a friend in his V-tail. LOTS-O-Traffic but landing was fine. Taking off later to the north, heavy, hot, and plus a person .. ugh. We BOUNCED over/on/through that same dip. Was an eye opener watching trees get closer than we prefer. Between the ok landing and the horrific take off, we had an absolute blast there. Flying M puts on a great event and much appreciated by all!!

I went to Reklaw several years ago. There were so many of us on final that everyone was zig-zagging trying to space. I ended up jumping out of line and going around for a second try. Thankfully I was the only one on final and greased in a fantastic landing. Then 30 minutes later watch a guy bounce his bi-plane down the runway and crashing it upside down. I'm not saying I would not go back but it is very low on my list of fun things to do. lol

@5thGenNativeTexan Жыл бұрын
I heard you say "one notch of flaps" and I immediately reacted with .. nope. You need to get that plane into a SHORT FIELD, slow configuration. Having flown into Reklaw for years, my advice for any pilots wanting to do it would be to go there first (on the ground) and watch the landings. In short order you'll get a much better feel for how that runway dips, where you should touch down, how best to plan your approach over the trees, etc. And you landed from the north, which is generally not the direction traffic is landing in October due to north winds. And it's more challenging from the south.
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
With the gusts, I chose to leave flaps at 10. I landed the direction of best winds and the direction everyone was landing. But I do agree a ground inspection not a bad idea before first time.

Getting on the gas is fine if there is plenty of runway. The gas (throttle) is our best dynamic glide angle and rate of descent control. Use it dynamically because it is a control. You ended up making a soft field landing, which is the safest and most controlled landing (if speed is under control with elevator) because it uses the throttle to touchdown. Good job. Throttle can also be used on short fields if we use full flaps and get a sink going bringing the throttle into dynamic play, but that is another story.

How're you liking the Delta Zulus? Any issues with them so far? How do you find the battery life?
@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
Battery life is pretty good. I fly a lot of long cross countries and charge it about every fourth trip or so. Recently jumped in someone’s 150, as right seat, and on takeoff, the CO alarm alerted me to high CO. We landed right away. Big hole in the exhaust. Wouldn’t have known without.

@pittss2c601 Жыл бұрын
He's lucky he's flying a forgiving airplane. I usually 'drive-in' to these types of fly-ins. Airshows, fly-in's, training centers etc. create high risk for pilots and their aircraft. There are lots of airplanes and people on both sides of that strip plus air traffic. That always causes pilot distraction and stress. That can easily lead to a bad or bouncy landing which is embarrassing.

@TakingOff Жыл бұрын
Because “Landing Poorly” is not a catchy channel name. 🤓
@leeoldershaw956 Жыл бұрын
You probably should have used more flaps and power and chop the power during or before the flare so the plane doesn't float and decelerates faster. Don't add power to extend touchdown point, land in the "dip" or go around. You destabilized the landing on a gusty day.
