Its not immaturity. You aren't used to this climate so of course your body hasn't adjusted to the water needs of that climate. It was a mistake, you tried to correct it, you did the right thing involving the paramedics and receptionists, and ultimately you needed more help. So many people die of complications of dehydration so its so good that you called it and went to the hospital

Yes too much drinking water is also bad when dehydrated. Honestly if you feel bad during this solo travel, it is better to go to the hospital right away. Better safe than sorry is always my motto when travelling in a a different country.

It must be a lot to take in being in hospital, alone, on the other side of the world. I'm so glad that you are better than the previous day, I hope your family are okay that anything serious happened. It’s admirable how you keep going. How you push on through the struggles. You’ve inspired me greatly to go out my comfort zone. I applied to university, thinking I’d never go, it’s not for me, I’d get rejected, but I got an unconditional. Never would I have thought that if it wasn’t for someone like you, encouraging viewers to do something they wouldn’t ever dreamt of. I wish you well and thank you for reading my silly rant ❤️

MD here: Hyponatremia is quite frequent, usually more in elderly people ou people who do sports in extreme conditions (tendencynof overdrinking water). And, yeah, the symtoms are those. You were lucky because your levels werent that low, because sodium correction can only be up until 10 mEq per day since a quicker correction would be harmful. Take care! That’s probably mosquito bites.

You need to not only drink more water but eat more salt when you're in hot climates - especially if you're going to excert yourself. Sodium is an essential micronutrient, and it's terrible how demonized it is by extreme online 'health gurus' who promote terrible advice if followed properly (I'm looking at you, freelee) Salt and many different unsaturated fats are really important to have in your diet and you literally can't function properly without them.

Salt is a rock, but ok. The best hydration is blood and raw milk, but since the big brainwashing, now everyone cooks their food to death and drinks water like a slave. I am also drinking water, but not 2-3 liters a day! Just think about it, water is a solvent. It dissolves nutrients in your gut, and you stress your kidneys also. My best recommendations for hydration in very hot and humid climates are exotic fruit like coconut(natural), papaya, melon(manmade, but less fiber) and grapes. If you think I lie or I just make up stuff, then go to a desert and jug liters of water and salt every day.You will get sick and malnourished.

Oh Holly. I work outside in the summer heat of Orlando. I’ve been through this. I’m so so sorry you had to go through it! Not only does it happen from dehydration, you mentioned it was humid as well. Humidity makes it more difficult to cool down, so you sweat more. Dehydration is absolutely no joke! We have a saying at Disney for entertainment: Hydrate or diedrate!

Your hyponatremia is due to: 1. Reduced (absent) salt intake in food. 2. Jogging in hot climate led to increased loss of salt through sweat. 3. Overhydration led to dilutional hyponatremia. RDA of salt for an adult is 4g/day. Pls add some salt in ur diet.

I'm glad that you're feeling better 😊 Human make mistakes, but the most important part is, we're learning from them 😉 I wasn't hospitalized because of something like that, but when I was 20 I nearly had a mild heat stroke, also in climate I'm not used to. I was so nauseous, had diahrea, was dizzy, tired.... and so on. That day my mum and I went on a day tour and stayed mostly in the shade, but it still happened and I learned my lesson... . I'm also on the paler side skin wise. This year I was on vacation in Scotland, north Ireland and Ireland and one of our hosts asked me if I had irish ancestors, because of my pale skin, freckles and dark hair. She even said I looked Gaelic 😅

We have a running "joke" in my family about this. When my brother was on an archaeological excavation in Italy, one day he had a headache and thought it was the heat (dehydration, after digging all day in 30 degrees) and kept drinking more and more water to get better. In the evening he called home to my dad, who's a doctor, and told him what was happning. My dad kinda just laughed and explained that my brother was experiencing "waterpoisoning" (as it's called in danish) and that he should eat some salami and rest. Now when it's hot, we all remind eachother to drink water and eat a lot salami!

Hey Holly. I’m so glad you feel better! I’m a phlebotomist and I deal with patients who go through this a lot. Your sodium levels are very very sensitive and have to be kept normal. How you said you chugged water really quick is probably what did it, water flushed out electrolytes like that and since you didn’t have any food, you didn’t have much sodium to begin with. Be careful with water, too much cannot be a good thing either! I’m so glad you are okay ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@bethdahl3741
@bethdahl3741 4 жыл бұрын
@@jaylakayalah5798 Alot of people draw inspiration from "what I eat in a day" videos, so there's that. And it's perfectly okay for someone to not eat nutritiously every single day (I don't, lol), but I've just seen after a few videos now (not just one), that she's not really eating alot of plant protein, and it seems to me that she wants to eat nutritious meals. It's totally possible to eat healthily and to consume enough protein on a vegan diet, but you need to actually eat a variety of protein sources (and varied, in general). You can also become deficient in one specific amino acid (particularly lysine) on a vegan diet, or any diet really. Holly's also very active, to the extent that she probably needs more than ~1 g of protein per kg of her body weight (probably closer to 1.6), which is the standard. This comes from a good place, and I hope she doesn't take offense to me critising her meals. I probably won't mention it again. I hope she feels better soon, that must have been such a horrible and scary experience.

@@HollyGabrielle I would advice you to book an appointment with a nutritionist when you get home, and maybe have your blood checked for any deficiencies by your GP. I'd also recommend the VEG 1 (Vegan's society) supplement, which not only includes B12, but also vitamin D and some minerals which are more difficult to come by on a vegan diet. Don't beat yourself up Holly ! It's not your fault and it wasn't caused by you being immature and stupid ! You just didn't know that it could get this serious. The only thing you did was to push yourself a bit too much perhaps, but that happens to a lot of people who are driven and active ! Anyone could have gone for a run even if it was a bit too hot, etc. I think the only mistake was to drink so much water afterwards, but that's a normal response and anyone would have done the same, not knowing or not realising that drinking too much water could be just as bad as drinking not enough ! Hearing your story reminded me of that fact, but I had quite forgotten and I think a lot of people wouldn't have realised either, because we hear so much about dehydration and the importance of drinking a lot of water. It's less common to hear about someone who drank too much water , you know ! If it happens again, you'll know to drink orange juice with water and salt in it instead of just water, or to purchase something like Gatorade (or any sport drink) or Pedialyte (or whatever those rehydration drinks for people with gastroenterology are called) at the pharmacy/drugstore etc. The only thing that surprises me though, is the fact that the paramedics didn't notice anything wrong :-/

Why would you go for a walk, then a run, then the gym? This is not healthy. When you are dehydrated you need water with glucose and salt (electrolytes). Plain water doesn't hydrate you and can actually dehydrate you more. Rest is just as important as exercise and food. Being hydrated isn't just about drinking water. Its having a balanced diet (not just all healthy foods as everyone needs a little salt) including glucose. You had too much water without sugar and salt which is why your blood was diluted.

The exact same thing happened to my friend (who's also vegan) this summer! We were on holiday together and had been out in the sun, and she also wasn't used to hot climates so when she started to feel unwell she was worried that she had sunstroke/heat exhaustion and so chugged loads of water. She had basically all the symptoms you described (nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, trembling etc) and we think she had a seizure and passed out briefly. We got her to a clinic (the only local medical place open on a Saturday night) who ambulanced her to a much bigger hospital and long story short it eventually turned out - after a two night stay in intensive care, two nights on a normal ward, numerous tests and scans, being on life support and not coming round when she should have done - that she had extremely low sodium levels (105!), probably caused by overhydration i.e. drinking too much water. Luckily she made a full recovery but it was a horrendous experience for her, as well as for me and my other friends as we had no idea if she was going to be OK at the time - plus this was all happening in a country where none of us spoke the language so it was incredibly stressful. All this to say that you're not alone, people make mistakes and learn from them and it seems like you did exactly the right thing in terms of listening to your body and making sure other people knew what was going on. Glad to hear you're doing better now and I really hope you don't let this stop you from getting the most out of the rest of your trip xx

As someone who has run a marathon and run a lot of half marathons, missing one run won't hurt your progress.A marathoner's mindset isn't about running everyday or hitting every workout perfectly, it's about being smart, knowing when not to run and through that setting yourself up for long-term success which means being more conservative in the present. If it's over 30 degrees (Celsius) I keep my speed at 6min/km (very slow for me - typical long run pace is around 5.30/km) and I don't run over 35 degrees. That's from someone who runs most days, who lived in humid South East Asia for years and now deals with Australian summers so your 'max' temps may be even less. If you set these hard and fast rules but also allow common sense to govern you should be fine. Make sure you get enough sodium and other minerals in your diet, eat enough and listen to your body. If that is difficult, think of what you'd say to someone else who was about to go running in 40 degree heat and then follow that advice. Rest up and take care - take a few days off any physical activity too. I've had heatstroke too and it took me a week to recover completely (no matter if you feel normal).

I'm not a runner but I did play a sport professionally and I simply didn't train outside over 35 degrees either. Australia is a challenging place for an athlete over the summer.

@@milly4543 yup it's all about knowing where to draw the line or looking for alternatives. It sucks Holly went through this but hopefully she knows and is able to see that a 'marathoner' s mindset' isn't just about exercising blindly but also that other people learn from her mistake too.

Holly, please don’t blame yourself..it’s surely not your fault, you’re not used with the hot climate.. take more rest and perhaps you can reduce your runs as you’re walking around the tour is also considered as an exercise.. sometime it takes time for the body to get adjusted to the climate.. take care holly and speedy recovery - lots of 💖 from malaysia

Hi Holly, I hope you're feeling better now. It's sad you had to go through that, but I'm glad amidst all that you reached out for help. Just my two cents, don't stress yourself too much when you're on your own. Rest when your body shows signs that it needs rest. Eat right amounts of food at right intervals (which you already do I'm sure) and rest. It's ok to take a day or two to fully recover. I really really hope this event hasn't put you in a scared place. You'll certainly have better days ahead of you because you're now wiser from this event. You're very knowledgeable for a person your age and you take care of yourself more than anyone your age does. So you'll be ok, I know it :') Don't worry too much, we all make mistakes. Best thing we can do is to learn from them. ♥️

Good that you have recovered so quickly in a day but your body needs time to get in balance again so take it easy. Stay out of the heat as much as you can for another day. You did well to know when to call for help. Do not feel silly. Lesson learned, and on to the next part of your trip with more understanding of what your body needs in that climate.

Glad you’re recovering and that you were able to seek medical treatment. Don’t beat yourself up about this, you live and learn. The heat here in Australia is really intense, even for locals, and it can be a steep learning curve how to live/get by in it for those who are unfamiliar with the climate. And you sharing your story might stop someone ending up in similar circumstances! Rest, hydralyte and please be kind to yourself ❤️

When you are throwing up more than one time you shouldn't drink liquid as it will cause you to throw up again and not brush your teeth just gargle because the taste of the toothpaste or mouth wash will make you feel nauseous. I have a very bad immune system so I throw up a lot .

You're being too hard on yourself. I have lived in Australia my whole life and am 'used' to the climate (if you can be!) and still forget to drink enough water. Take it easy and don't let this derail your trip! I am loving following it with you!

sugarspellitout1 it’s not that she’s not drinking enough water at all... she’s drinking too much water and flushing out the sodium, alongside not ingesting the correct nutrients in order to absorb that water ... she basically only eats sugary foods and drinks water so it’s definitely not dehydration caused by lack of water

Holly please don't be so hard on yourself! You're in a completly new situation and surrounding! You did absolutely right contacting people in the hostel and not staying in your room alone trying to get over it. so I think you did really well in this situation! It can get pretty scary when you're experiencing something you never did before so you definitely could have handled this worse! The tingling feeling in the fingers comes from hyperventilation, I had that as well a year ago, it just makes everything worse but you literally can not stop the heavy breathing 😅 Please just try to give yourself a little more time to get used to everything!

Oh Holly, you aren't silly at all! Please, please don't let that thought trouble you. As you said, you aren't used to the climate at all and the changes you have to make or the things you need to take into consideration. This summer just gone, it was very hot in the part of the UK I live in, the temperatures were in the high 30's. Where I work, there is no air-con, so I had to be so, so careful as the temperatures inside the building are even higher than outside. I am bad at remembering or having the chance to drink enough at the best of times, so I did get dehydrated. I have ended up feeling very, very unwell from that in the past. You live and learn my lovely. I'm just so glad you are getting better now. Perhaps get hold of some Dioralyte or similar to keep with you, just in case you get an early signs again. Also, thank you for raising awareness on here. Keep being you and enjoy your time left in Oz 😘

If you buy water, you can see the amount of minerals in them which varies greatly! Some mineral waters have as much calcium as milk, some have almost none. With tap water, you can never be sure, it might have very little minerals so it does not replenish your electrolytes at all.
